These animals are most likely steppe wisents, ancient relative of bisons with much larger horns (but not directly ancestral to the two modern species), that were found in most of the northern hemisphere before being replaced by the antecessor of the modern species and going extinct ~13,000 years ago. Well, now we know the reason to that.

So, if we do accept that those are long-horned bisons, then this scene is happening back in the Americas.

Her being a mess and helping with the hunt - She's not some externally defined beauty. That is, she's not an aloof observer, she's not an alien, she's not venus or a god. Her mentality is of the earth - she belongs here.
I'm less sure of what she *is* after all of these images. I think we should find out soon, for there's not much farther back we can go and still involve humans. However, I'm not so sure humans are even the point anymore..... Way to confuse us Tom! Our theories are all smashed to bits.

Didn't Cro-Magnon have combs? Jeez, Jones. Letting yourself go. It could be that City Face was the leader of the wisents.

Jones is the personification of the mother Earth.
A great, powerful, present, caring, immobile, beautiful, stone.

So I reckon the next strip or two we see her actual origin, some sort of formation out of stone, whether a human-looking stone that came alive through belief, or a carving made by an early human, or coming from an earth elemental, or something. The Cro-Magnon are about as far back as we can go I reckon, and it is after all the 'many millennia ago' timestamp, so the end of that literary time persion of some, several, many that Tom has been using.
So yeah, her origins on Wednesday, and on Friday her telling Annie something that sums it up in a single sentence, and cut away to Annie looking shocked.

No need to tie a name to it. Also I think we're already predating that myth by a quite a bit now.

I don't think the timing of the myths is too important, if she is the mother earth since dawn of time, or dawn of humanity at any rate, then different cultures would have encountered her and named her different things, I just mentioned Gaia as is probably the closest thing to a recognisable name we have for Mother earth that is still recognised nowadays. I think the Mother Earth theory sounds interesting, but surely that would mean she would be more on the forest's side rather than human's side? She seems far more interested in humans than nature, so maybemore of a mother-human than a mother earth?

In any case, those do look a lot more like long-horned bisons than like steppe wisents (even if they look a lot more like steppe wisents than anything alive today).

Tom specifically links to the Cro-Magnon, which mostly existed in the Eurasian region, not north america, so I think we can assume this is Europe/western asia/north africa. I think she'd be more interested in Earthly affairs than Etheric ones. Hmm true, I guess she exists on the boundary. A creation of man, but a human creation rather than an etherial creation. Perhaps like Coyote said, humans see a stone and see many things, she is the personification of the tools, statues and physical creations, coyote is the personification of the myths and gods we create. I'm just making stuff up here, we're near the end!

It doesn't matter what the bison look like, if these are cro-magnon then this is happening in Europe, by definition. From wiki: "Cro-Magnon is an informal name for the first early modern humans (early Homo sapiens sapiens) of the European Upper Paleolithic".
I'd say we're at the beginning. It's a pleasure to see her so involved.

To be more specific: Steppe wisent (bison priscus) ; 2 meters at the shoulder Long-horned bison (bison latifrons) (note: wikipedia incorrectly redirect "long-horned bison" to "steppe wisent") ; 2.5 meters at the shoulder. The animal Tom drew is clearly much closer to latifrons; the timing is a bit problematic, but if we assume late extinction of latifrons and early american settlement theory (as early at 40,000 years ago), then it works. This is also well within the range of the upper Paleolithic, so there is no problem with these people being refered to as cro-magnon, even if they are in America.

She must have had *pretty high* standing in the tribe for being able to flip prey to the waiting spears of the other hunters like that. I like those cavemen's practical thinking. They were the only we have seen so far who employed her for something that's both really important and is clearly helped by her abilities. She must be some kind of time traveler. It was "time traveling opposite-sex-clone cyborg", IIRC. I can't help but admire that neat trim on her fur skirt. Even way back then she was quite stylish. The new theory: Jones is an anthropomorphic personification of "stylish". OK, so this could be the start of the Legend of Stone... in which one Cro-Magnon learned the secret of stopping an on-rushing mammoth... and because the tribe came to believe that she was made of stone, she actually became made of stone. Doomed to walk the earth! (suddenly pictures young Morihei Ueshiba meeting the certain Spirit of Stone) Wow. I think Jones is absolutely beautiful here. Is that weird? That might be weird. No.

I think the Mother Earth theory sounds interesting, but surely that would mean she would be more on the forest's side rather than human's side? She seems far more interested in humans than nature, so maybemore of a mother-human than a mother earth? I like this idea! As for all the time-traveling!Jones supporters, you have to remember what Coyote said about her: she's the perfect example of what he'd been talking about, which was (assumably) how humans can call into existence something just by believing in it strongly enough. SOO, perhaps Jones is a mythical Mother Earth created by one particularly strongly-believing group of humans who had already formed a symbolic meaning for blonde hair. It seems to me that in most cultures familiar with blonde hair, this trait is associated with youth and beauty, both of which Jones certainly possess. I know some people have already mentioned that blonde hair hadn't existed any further back than a handful of thousands of years, but if this aforementioned group of humans had really thought Mother Earth had always existed, then Jones existed way back with the Cro-Magnons who are supposed to have looked nothing like her. Just gotta... work in the Stone for this theory somehow...

I like it now that she is not an alchemist, which was my absolute favourite.

The story of Jones quite reminds me of the movie "The Man from Earth". Good movie. Very good comics. I love that. But... I can't wait to discover the next pannel ! >.< What a torture ! Edit : I don't think she has a skin that pale. She is a little bit tanned, don't you think ?...

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else see a resemblance to www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=374? It's probably just me, actually. Also, not having the benefits of a college education on ancient history, I'm just going to make another wild guess: Jones is Eve. Yes, that Eve. Because why not?

For the record: Those of us suggesting that Jones is a time traveler were kidding. Mostly. I hope. The only possible theory involving her and time travel involves her being created in the future as a golem (by Kat? ) and then being sent to the past, Samurai Jack. But yeah, that theory ignores what Coyote's been saying, so it's definitely probably not true. I love this "Mother Earth; Jones" theory! She gets to be as old as the Earth and it fits with her being unassociated or beholden to nothing, yet still completely wrapped up in it all. (if that makes any sense) EDIT: Just had a funny idea... What if Jones picked the next medium to be... HERSELF?!??!? And she felt like speaking in the third person when she said who was picked. I mean, I know that's not likely to be the case, but doesn't Jones seem like the perfect type of person to be medium? I'll bet whatever she actually turns out to be is something that could never be a medium.
