In the next page, we will see Annie and Big Y in the meadow, alone, talking as if nothing happened. There is no Coyote. Wow -- I just pictured them like Calvin and Hobbes, in a summertime version of " Let's go exploring". How wonderful! But also, how strange and sad of an ending. Now you've got me all wistful, because I like this and I remember how sad I was when Calvin and Hobbes ended, and I don't want Gunnerkrigg Court to end also.

I occasionally think of the scene where Jones said she could take Annie from Coyote if she wanted. That seemed odd to me, considering Coyote's powers which let him stop time or pick celestial objects out of the sky on a whim. Maybe Coyote really is a product of peoples imagination, or the etheric manifestation of the conflict between humans and animals - he appeared when that conflict started to escalate, and it was he who separated the Court and the Forest by the Annan waters. As an etheric being he would be more naturally at home at the Forest, but also be aware that he could not exist without the humans. Anyway, Jones probably knows his secret, maybe she is aware that she could destroy him by disbelieving him with sufficient willpower?

Does Coyote exist then only in the etheric?
He also seems to have 3 skulls so maybe he originally did not have a physical body and was pieced together from the skeletons of many animals?

Scarily, this is actually one of the things that I considered him saying.

Somehow, I feel like Tom might be going meta with this.
I don't exactly know how, but that's the feeling I'm getting. Maybe Coyote knows that he is in a comic and therefore nobody in that world actually exists? Maybe that will play a part in the comic itself? I actually sort of hope so; I love stories like that.
(Also, is it weird that I'm barely even surprised by this? Must be the things I read...)

That still doesn't explain why he loves humans and Ysengrin hates them

Well, that's that then. Where's the end of chapter symbol in the corner? Seriously, though, it makes a sort of sense - heck, he even said as much the first time Annie went to the forest! It just sounded like metaphor at the time.

I'm the Great Coyote, baby; I've got tricks I'll do anything for kicks I'm the Great Coyote, baby; I don't cheat Rules change beneath my feet Too bad for sainthood, too good for sin There's no fight or competition that I couldn't win I'm the Great Coyote, baby; stories all say I win the day! I'm older than the sun and yet as fresh as morning dew My jaws so strong, my teeth so sharp there's nothing they cannot hew I'm the Great Coyote, I am sure that you have heard From man or bird I'm the Great Coyote, legend older than you can know From head to toe I have never failed, and I can do no wrong Great and mighty figure told of in uncountable songs I'm the Great Coyote, baby; here comes the twist... I DON'T EXIST!Aww yeah! Swing heil baby! Does this mean that the Neil Gaiman/Terry Prachett belief mechanism theory is true? I did NOT see that one coming...

I apologize if someone else already mentioned this and I somehow missed it, but remember the last panel of this page? The skull was how Annie perceived Coyote through her dream. And now here we are, pages later, with Coyote unraveling himself into a skull.

This is not the secret. Coyote is just trolling Annie(and us) right now. Monday will feature Annie raising one eyebrow with a look on her face and telling him to knock it off and just tell her already.

This will definitely raise at least one of her eyebrows, quizzically, disapprovingly, or both.
Also; if Coyote is a God/mental projection and says 'I do not Exist', he is actually stating a paradox; seeing as he would thus both exist and not exist at the same time. Existing in the aether, or in the minds of others.

I don’t know if anyone’s brought up this angle, but the reason for Annie’s visit to the forest in the first place — telling Coyote stories about himself — meshes well thematically with the theory that he’s only a corporeal figment of one’s imagination. I mean, even in the Gunnerkrigg universe I can’t imagine that the stories of (e.g.) him helping out with creation of the universe are literally true. And yet they’re stories that he seems to accept and take pride in.

Maybe Coyote used to exist but he's been reduced to those two etheric bands. This could have something to do with why he came to the forest.

It just sounded like metaphor at the time. Oh wow, thank you for this link. I strongly reccomend everyone reread this whole chapter (Chapter 20: "Coyote Stories") as it seems incredibly relevant right now. Coyote even drops hints about his "Great Secret" back then! I apologize if someone else already mentioned this and I somehow missed it, but remember the last panel of this page? Damn, this link too. I'm beginning to feel like I want to reread the whole story every time I read a new page. It's amazing how intertwined this whole thing is. Tom not only has the story planned out far into the future, but pieces of imagery and metaphor as well!

Nice one Coyote. Descartes is just spinning in his grave.
Possbile Mondays- 1) Annie: Thats funny, NEITHER DO I! *Peels off face.* 2) Coyote ducks behind a rock. 3) Coyote sits in the open with a stupid expression. Annie does a flat "What."

So he is not exist... Physically(totally etheric being) or he just isn't alive(at this moment his body is dead)? Does this mean that Ñoyote is closer to a zombie or lich in that case? Also: BOO) I believe along the same lines, he was such a powerful god that even when he died a shadow skeleton of his former self remained

2) Coyote ducks behind a rock. We've already heard about Coyote goat. I don't even want to think about Coyote ducks!

Hmm... Possibly Coyote being deathless (or at least, not able to die so that it sticks) has come to mean Coyote doesn't exist in his own sight. Even if he was born/created it's been thousands (tens of thousands?) of years and with all the flattering stories he might no longer remember being young if he ever was young. Humans are born, they live, then they die. Coyote has been watching them all this time while he himself remains Coyote, no matter what form he takes or what body he possesses. Because their time is limited that makes every moment relevant. So... He loves humans because they "exist."
And welcome to the forums, Sapientcoffee!

I'm another one of those lazy people who finally created an account after this. I hope the next page has an explanation, if it turns out to be a joke rather than the big secret I'd be a bit disappointed... probably not as put out as Annie though.

Coyote is just so awesome and all-powerful he has discovered that he's part of an online comic! Thats's the theory I'm going with!

If he has, he's not alone. Tom has said that most bonus pages are canon, including those featuring Tea, the white-haired girl who can see us.
Now I want to see Tea and Coyote fight.
