So either it's Winsbury and Janet claiming that the two of them are best friends ever, or they're saying that the others are good friends for doing that to them.
Also, just googled Winsbury, and "Willie o Winsbury" is a ballad! Very cool.

Huh. I guess they expected Winsbury and Janet to freak out and attack each other.
Of course we can't see where they put Winsbury's right hand so maybe...

Wow, that backfired pretty badly. Gotta love their reaction, though.

Well done guys, making two kids who last night told you they were going out look like they're going out. Genius.

Well done guys, making two kids who last night told you they were going out look like they're going out. Genius. Ah I think they had a clever ruse that convinced everyone they weren't by telling outrageous tales of how the started dating. Hence why Bud was seeing they really had him going for a moment but didn't think it was real. Secondly, why everyone looks stunned at being called the best friends ever.

Do Janet and Willie know that the others moved them into that position? Maybe they think they ended up like that on their own and are trying to make an excuse for it?

Do Janet and Willie know that the others moved them into that position? Maybe they think they ended up like that on their own and are trying to make an excuse for it? That makes more sense to me. But then wherein lies the backfire? I don't think Willie is thanking his friends. His fist is raised and he and Janet are putting up the front of hating each other anyway.

I think the backfire is what Margo and John thought they were doing. They thought they would make Janet and William pay for that ridiculous story (make the story backfire at them). And this: Do Janet and Willie know that the others moved them into that position? Maybe they think they ended up like that on their own and are trying to make an excuse for it? And are we even sure, if it's William, who said the "Best. Friends. Ever."?

Anyone else think that, honestly, you're reading way too much into a 'humor' page?

I didn't really get it, so I'm fine with people trying to figure it out.

And are we even sure, if it's William, who said the "Best. Friends. Ever."? I believe those are spittle flecks in front of his face in that last panel, implying he's the one yelling. Anyone else think that, honestly, you're reading way too much into a 'humor' page? It is physically impossible to read too much into this comic. That's what makes it so awesome. Also, stop being a killjoy, please. :<

Well, the way I figure it is that (1) they didn't believe Willy and Janet's revelation of being a couple due to their ridiculous story; (2) they saw them sleeping in close proximity and wanted to turn their previous "fake love confession" against them; and (3) it backfired because they were being honest.
On the whole issue of Willy's fist, it doesn't look like an angry threatening fist. It more like that celebratory fist-pumping gesture (the "oh yeah" gesture if you will).

But...I was under the impression that Willie and Janet were still keeping this a secret. So why would they be publicly acknowledging they enjoyed this?

But...I was under the impression that Willie and Janet were still keeping this a secret. So why would they be publicly acknowledging they enjoyed this? I was under the impression that they were serious, but just told a ridiculous over-the-top story for the hell of it--which no one believed. But if we go with the "they were screwing with their classmates to keep it a secret" theory, it's still explainable: what better way to keep them confused about the true nature of their relationship than not reacting in the expected manner?

They're still keeping it a secret. Thus the quick covert kiss when they were done, and no one was looking, and thus now covering for the misplaced hand by "Best friends forever." The reaction is not what Margo and John expect, but they probably won't think on it long enough to read anything out of it.

My thoughts? Everyone thought the story was fake, so they positioned Winsbury and Janet that way, Winsbury knowing that he and Janet were positioned that way (which he probably wanted but they're still keeping it a secret since Janet's dad would understandably be angry) Proclaimed them the best friends ever for making it so.
