My God, Tom, it's like you WANT intense debates about the girls' sexualities to happen. I'm not going to read too much into either glances for the sake of my sanity, but I KNOW others will. Also: Awwwww, that hug. -- Edit: Okay, I lied. Possible interpretations (I endorse none of them, just writing them out for exploration): -Kat sees that Annie has found a new close friend, so maybe Paz is a possible new close-friend choice. -Paz just planted the seed of doubt in her mind, and while she may not be actually gay at this point, she may be questioning. -Kat has feelings for Annie, so when she sees her hugging Jack, she assumes the worst, and looks at Paz, who is also pining after someone who does not share the same feelings in return. She relates.* -Kat has feelings for Annie, so when she sees her hugging Jack, she assumes the worst, and looks at Paz, who she may also have feelings for. Both are not working out.* *These two options would correlate with the one time, waaaay back, that Rey made a lesbian joke about Annie and Kat. Annie reprimanded Rey and was not phased, while Kat was pretty embarrassed. -All of this means nothing, and Tom is messing with us for the lulz. (Editedit: Reordered them so it doesn't look like I'm a crazy shipper. Because I'm not.) Literarily speaking, it would have been pretty useless for Tom to have included the little aside with Kat/Paz, unless Kat actually turns out to be gay/bi, or is going to have some sort of crisis of sexuality... But she liked Alistar? But it's quite possible it was all for comedic effect/to poke fun at Kat's masculine sense of style/choice of hobbies. And the shippers, of course. awrbgaiwneihrvgasnfeibwaibgr I have said this many times before, but Tom, you are a master of your craft.

Maybe Kat is just angry that Annie spend all the night with jack and ignored her? By the way. Hi forum .

I can't be bothered going back through previous posts to see who it was, but somebody predicted a hug and somebody predicted that Kat would see them. Can't remember if it was the same person, or a few people, but well done. Much respect.
As for Kat, it's fairly clear that she's lonely, as Eversist has pointed out. Let the speculation run wild!
Personally I think she cares about Paz as a friend, hence why she supported her when she was rejected by Matt. She also mentioned missing Alistair (If that was the bird-boy's name, I can't remember), so it's unlikely she's having a crisis of sexuality.
I think she may feel like she's losing Annie and perhaps its time for their incredibly close friendship to branch out a bit.

Another possibility:
-Kat sees Annie hugging Jack, the thought hits her that pretty much all her friends are in or on way towards a relationship. Apart from her. A point hammered into her by the fact that Paz thought she wasn't into guys.

@ sharpey
"She also mentioned missing Alistair (If that was the bird-boy's name, I can't remember), so it's unlikely she's having a crisis of sexuality."
To be fair, liking boys does not automatically exclude also liking girls. And love is just messy enough to allow you to still be fond of someone while already nursing a new crush.
Just saying.
In other news, damn Kat, you don't look happy. I wana hug *you*. I just hope this doesn't lead to another blow in their friendship, after they just mended the first one.

If the previous comic's theme was RE-JECTED! this one is RE-JECTED! PART 2 (while also softening Annie's re-jection since she and Jack have finally worked out they are still actually friends).
I agree with sharpey, I don't think it's a romantic issue at all. Merely one of Kat starting to feel alone again, her only true friend growing away from her while her own attempts to make a new close friend collapsed in an embarassing heap when she tried to empathise with that new close friend.
Annie and Kat sneaking out with a small group, then not talking to each other for the whole night? This was formerly inconceivable. It's still pretty amazing.

Tho my take it on is that she feels like Paz might be the only one in their circle that she could possible have gotten with tonight in their stay-out-all-night-match-making. Panel 5 is the lock to me on this theory more then the others

some lesbians do like/date/"crush" on guys until they come to the realization. Yeah, well aware of that. I was just trying to bring up everything to possibly bring down particular theories. I've noticed that Tom doesn't usually include something in his comic for the sake of just including it. It always has some sort of connection later on.

Panel 2: Across Kat's right ear at Annie and Jack Panel 3: In reverse at Kat's face. Panel 4: Reversing again to look across Kat's right ear, only from further back so we see all of her head, Kat is now looking at a blank wall. Annie, Jack, and the door have disappeared.
As for interpreting what happened, I will have to see more (lots more) later on.
Furthermore, it's getting late, Annie and Jack need to get back, but Kat is going back to sleep.

theory I read on /co/ just now, interesting but I think it assumes Kat knows more than she really does, and also that Annie really does like Jack, which is still up for debate.
Kat sees Annie liking a guy who doesn't return her feelings because he's distracted pining after a supernatural girl he has no chance with, and realizes that Paz is in the exact same situation, and falls asleep mulling all that over

There are either implied doubts about Kat's sexuality, for the shippers or, a more obvious thing :

I like the "seed of doubt" theory. some lesbians do like/date/"crush" on guys until they come to the realization And some lesbians weren't lesbians all along, sexuality is fluid (for some people at least).

What I got from this was that Kat assumed that Annie had made progress with Jack, which she may have tried to engineer from the beginning with th nudge in... I forget the number, near the start... and now she is coming to regret it as it pushes Annie further away. The look at Paz suggests to me that she is building resentment for Annie as it brought up the question of her sexuality and now she is being ditched, so to speak. OR it could be that she is just addled from lack of sleep and coming off a sugar high, but I think Tom is a better storyteller than that.
-I apologize if this looks mickey mouse, I'm addled from lack of sleep and comimg down off a sugar high.

Welp, looks like this page will bring no rest to the shippers. Again. EDIT: As for what I think this all is, I think bendinsis hit the nail right on the head. And on a first forum post too.

I just got it. Chapter 34. Rule 34!!! This chapter was tailor made for ship tease into every direction imaginable for the sake of a stealth pun. Or else a coincidence of hilarious magnitude. Either way, well played.

I agree with legion - regardless of what Kat is actually thinking, Paz certainly seemed to make her doubt some of her feelings, platonic or otherwise. The glance towards Paz had to be intentional. It kind of gives me a "pfft, what she she know?" vibe.
Oh, you teenagers and your hormones.

Or... Kat saw the whole sequence (with what we see on the previous page) and thinks Annie is in much the same situation as Paz, only less oblivious about it. Or maybe Kat had her own eye on Jack. And the look at Paz was "ah, what would you know, silly".

Maybe Kat is just angry that Annie spend all the night with jack and ignored her? By the way. Hi forum . This seems quite plausible, especially considering how Annie hurt Kat not so long ago with the whole forest adventure thing. Kat may think that Annie doesn't consider her best friend's feelings as much as she should. Recall that Kat seemed to have some misgivings about this night of sneakytimes anyway, but Annie's participation helped motivate her... and then Annie runs off and leaves Kat with the others, who are all pairing off as... Another possibility: -Kat sees Annie hugging Jack, the thought hits her that pretty much all her friends are in or on way towards a relationship. Apart from her. A point hammered into her by the fact that Paz thought she wasn't into guys. ...so aptly points out. It's not difficult to see that of the ten people who snuck out tonight, Kat is the only one who might not have had such a great time. Seeing Jack and Annie hugging, when it's usually Annie who has difficulty socially, and then seeing Paz and being reminded of that incident... which in turn reminded her of Alistair and the woe that came with that... yeah. Poor Kat.

In the last panel, I thought that Kat was pretending to be asleep, perhaps to avoid Annie when she comes back from saying good-bye to Jack. I thought the glance at Paz meant, "Oh, she's asleep, no one else saw that, I should just pretend to be asleep too."
I really feel for Kat in this chapter. I remember feeling so much pressure about "having a boyfriend" when I was her age, as it seemed like everyone around me was pairing off except me (which certainly wasn't true), even though I thought I was too young to be dating and would have been happy to have been single as long as everyone else around me had been happy with that too. In some ways, I feel like Kat is more innocent and childlike than the other characters when it comes to romance. She has her school girl crushes, but seems primarily interested in friendships at this point. Robot clearly crushes on her, but she seems somewhat oblivious to that. I think she'd be content to crush on Mulder and Mr. Eglamore and build her robots and have adventures with her best friend without any complicated romance stuff getting in the way (as if the court and the forest don't provide enough complications). Now she sees that Annie is getting complicated with romance, and that's probably going to complicate their friendship, as others have said.
