This should probably go in the "wild speculation" thread, but am I the only one that feels like Annie has been channeling surma since she got back? And I mean that literally. Yeah, Surma's fire flamed up in "Fire spike", and Coyote has likely done what he could to fuel it during her stay in the forest - which make me think it would be a good idea for Annie to spend more time with Ysengrin rather than coyote whenever she gets the chance. Though, as others have mentioned - hormones probably play a role here too, Annie's age taken in mind. Also, does others think this may end up with Annie getting some more detention?

Man, you guys are ruthless. Annie's a 14-year-old kid who tried to play a prank on Jack, but she "deserves" to be told that hey, he just wanted a kiss lololol, and she's tooootally too much trouble to be with?
Also, she's apparently a huge bitch bluh bluh because...she...tried to play a prank on him.
She pulled the rug out from under him because she's harboring a grudge, but he's being pretty piggish and nasty here himself. Consider this: if she had really liked him and he had kissed her, it wouldn't have meant anything for him. He's throwing that in her face right now. He's also calling her out for having "baggage" when he honestly has no idea what she's been through and is in no position to call her out, beyond knowing that she harbors grudges and tries to repay them in petty ways.
Consider also that Annie led Jack on by flirting and then pulled the plug, but that's not actually a crime. They're both barely teenagers and they hadn't confessed true love for one another; frankly, I doubt that they even know what love is at this stage. She didn't date him for weeks and then unceremoniously dump him, declaring, "I never loved you, mwahaha!" She flirted, and then she said, "I don't actually like you! Haha! Does that hurt?"
Most of the people in this thread are focusing on Annie's nastiness, and she has a mean streak, but Jack does too. Neither of them are conducting themselves with much maturity right now, and neither of them should be lauded for their behavior. (As funny as Jack's dismissive "I ain't even mad" attitude is.)

Not without Bud revealing the fact that he was there or helped them. He seems to mainly be there so they don't try anything really stupid. As for the remembering past lives, I guess anything is possible there and Tom has certainly opened the door in that direction.

And because I just could not resist again: I laughed so much. Also yeah Annie's acting real out of character compared to earlier chapters. What happened in that forest?

Annie and Jack both are trying to hurt each other, but when Jack's doing it, it's a counterattack. He was perfectly civil this evening until Annie revealed that she had spent all her time there setting up a trap to humiliate him. Also, everything he's saying is true whereas Annie's attack was purely based on deception. It's impolite to be as bluntly truthful as that, but Annie's given up any right to expect polite treatment from him. Basically, turnabout is fair play. He's also calling her out for having "baggage" when he honestly has no idea what she's been through and is in no position to call her out, beyond knowing that she harbors grudges and tries to repay them in petty ways. Because "what she's been through" means she has the right to hurt people for what she herself seems to know is a bad reason?

And because I just could not resist again: Hahaha, genius. You win this thread. Also: I wasn't sure whether Jack was serious about Zimmy or just having Annie on, but that last thing about meeting his parents just seems way too much like he's trying to goad her, so I'm pretty sure he's messing with her now.

Yes, Annie's 14 years old. She's not a delicate flower. She'll survive this. She might actually even be better off for it. Dealing with this sort of thing is part of being a functional human being. It was a premeditated, vicious (so she hoped) emotional attack against someone who was completely innocent. This entire incident is prima facie evidence of baggage. Jack's response is immature but completely justified and (unlike Annie's attack) well-executed. Of course we are going to cheer for that.

Ann was being pretty normal when Jack just came and took it to another level

I agree with Shmargluff on the previous page of this thread in saying that the last panel is important -- looks like she's figured out he's kidding.
I much preferred her stoicism, and hope she learns to keep her mouth shut again, because when you talk all the time, you will probably say some very stupid things you will regret later.

Annie was behaving much more viciously than Jack here. I don't care how old you are - it's cruel to play with someone's feelings like that, (and 14 is not that young). Also, I'm quite sure now that Jack was messing with her when he said he's in love with Zimmy. If that's the case, and he actually does like her, then you can't really blame him for anything...except perhaps taking the joke a little too far.
That being said, I feel a little bad for Annie...I feel like many more things are going to blow up her face this year.

Also, does others think this may end up with Annie getting some more detention? Only if the faculty find out about this incident - which would probably result in the other kids getting detention too, for sneaking out with her. (And Bud probably getting in trouble for helping them - when he's supposed to be discouraging rule-breaking rather than assisting it. Of course, there's the theory that the Court *wants* the children to engage in sneaking out and breaking the rules to prepare them for becoming scientists there, but they have to keep up appearances.) I don't think that the time in the forest was *entirely* responsible for Annie's change, since she was showing signs of this behavior even before (copying Kat's homework, breaking her promise to keep Surma's deceit a secret, sending fire after Eglamore, etc.). But it might have speeded up the road that she was going down.

Come on Annie burn him. Okay I don't really think that will really happen.
I'm guessing that something else will happen that will cause Bud to intervene. I don't really like Jack that much, he just comes off as aggravating. I hope Annie learns from this though.

Perhaps using magic pulls the fire elemental a bit closer to the surface? She started the summer off with a wall of fire that probably consumed more magic than she'd used in her entire life up to that point, and I can imagine that she spent the rest of the summer casting constantly.

Annie was behaving much more viciously than Jack here. I thought some more about this and found that while her intentions were unacceptable, she didn't really do all that much except for a little flirting for maybe for ten minutes. (I previously perceived this differently. Probably because i was reminded of Surma.) In my book, they're even now Perfect time for some diplomatic words, Jack. You were going to be diplomatic now, right? Right? ;D By the way: I like how the whole growing-up-thing and the actual plot are interwoven like this - that there's some character development going on instead of being only generic teenage-drama.

Well, she did just call Zimmy a psychopath and imply that Jack has poor taste in women, so it's not like she hasn't been escalating too. Edit: Though I agree, one of them should stop this (or someone, perhaps bud, ought intervene) before things get completely out of hand, considering that at least one of them has access to vast destructive forces and a willingness to use them if sufficiently provoked.

Hmm... Sorry, I'm new to the forum, but I can't seem to find this on "Search," and I don't know where else to post it, but....
I trust that Antimony's name is derived from the Latin verb Moneo for "to advise"? Moneo means a myriad of other, related things, as well, though I'm guessing this is the primary sense? Her name means "to advise against", or some such thing? (I hope it doesn't mean "against advice"; maybe it means that her opinion is against the prevailing opinions?).
But I can't see where this is discussed in the forum...? Is there a definitive answer about the significance of her name? Or is it primarily intended to have a metallurgical/alchemy sense in terms of precipitating alloys or some such thing (not a geologist-type, but I am a Latin type)...

No, it's from the chemical (or alchemical) element Antimony. This is backed up by the fact that her mother's name was Surma Stibnite. Stibnite is an ore that contains antimony, and surma is another name for kohl, which is an eyeshadow that contains antimony (possibly the same eyeshadow that Antimony is rarely seen without). As another note more relevant to this page, when I looked up antimony and alchemy, I stumbled across this little phrase: "This elemental alchemy symbol represents animal tendencies found in humankind – a wild nature in all of us."Seems like Annie's found her "wild nature".

Hello.
I'd like to point out something important. Yes, Annie pretended to correspond to Jack's interest in her. But (accepting that he was truly after reconnecting with Zimmy) then he pretended to have an interest in her.
As far as I can tell they were both playing exactly the same game. If Jack's feelings were true, then he would be hurt and humilliated. If Annie's feelings had been true, she'd have ended up hurt and humilliated.
However, and keeping in mind the recent information that the 'white-legs' just strongly influenced Jack, it seems to me that Jack is at heart a manipulator and that he'll say and do a lot (not to be exaggerated and say a so far conceited 'pretty much anything') to get what he wants.
And from what I can see from their previous conversation, he was suspiciously interested in the blinker stone. Something he had already shown interest in during camp (when he tried to steal it).

She cut him off before he could kiss her and gave up the gambit at that point, but he was willing to go through with it just for the hell of it, even without knowing her feelings. So no, he wasn't petty or vengeful, but he was uncaring in a way that strikes me as far more distasteful. I'd probably rather deal with a bluh bluh huge bitch than an opportunist who straight-up isn't giving a shit about potentially hurtful things he's doing.

Also: I just realized how much everyone here hates Annie. I don't hate her at all. I just found it remarkable how quick her personality turned around is all. I think her personality is actually appropriate for her age... everyone has a bit of a mean streak in them... I know I did at that age, but that's because I was extremely insecure and immature but trying to play at cool and mature. Haha, and I'm going to sound a bit sexist here(even though I'm female) but she's also a girl. Hormones affect females more around this age than males only because girls do physically mature more than boys. Haven't you ever dealt with a female on the rag? We aren't exactly pleasant flowers around that time. I know I become emotionally charged and sometimes even mean as hell. I'm pretty sure though that alot of what's to do with her personality had something to do with the forest and not just aging and maturity and girly bits.

Most likely. Aaaand if Annie realizes this too, this raises the chance of sudden calming down a lot. Her "prejudice to non-humans" mainy involves complete exclusion of living humans from the list of creatures fit to talk with at all. Kat is there only because she approached Annie. maybe she has always thought of Zimmy as a deranged psychopath? Heh, it's not like this could change anything. Given Annie's relationship with Renard while being sure he tried to kill her. Same with Ol' Grin. I like how Jack has no objections, though. Speaking of which, I wonder what she'll try next since nothing is working. No one's ever resisted her before. Mort and Renard were pushovers. I mean, Renard fought back, but Jack's just impervious to the attack in the first place. Of course, she can always fall back to no-nonsense mode and begin to seriously advise him on necessary prerequisites for any relationship with Zimmy other than "make her hiss at him". Now that could be a good backfire... Even better than if she'd just smile and confide he have no idea how right he is. That's making me want to see what happened in the forest even more. Most likely? Tom is going to torment us with this blind-spot in a hundred of ways at least for an year. And we're going to groan and scream the bloody mutiny... yet actually enjoy this. Right? That last bit could go either way. It could make her breakdown or send her into an absolute fury. Or maybe now it got through that he's kidding, at last. I mean, just try to imagine... Zimmy would make a good impression with his parents? If by "good impression" he means "running away screaming", maybe… ...on the other hand, do we know what's up between him and his parents right now? Maybe he really thinks it's a good idea? ;D In anticipation for the next page my weekend will be filled with songs like "Blow It Up" by Bonaparte or "Burning Down the House" by Tom Jones. "Ultra", by KMFDM I think on next page Annie will be laughing about his "little" crazy idea... Or just kick his ass))) I wonder if she's going to break down and cry -- then Jack relents and comforts her. That, or flames and broken furniture, it could go either way. I almost see her trying all four at once. Perhaps I'm taking a huge leap of logic here, but isn't it possible that Annie spent her time in the forest getting in touch with herself, so to speak? Could she have found a way to absorb her past the memories of past lives? Hey, it's a good idea! If not likely - it means bewildered "what the tictoc Court is?!" and vast first-hand knowledge all the way back to Anselm and Serpentina at once - this very likely includes the founding - at the same time. And Tom just answered a question on FS about this. Figures. But the very point that Jack's mind was gradually twisted rather than overridden can't help Annie to simply dismiss everything Jack did as "spider stuffing". I am terrible, and will likely be hated forever... But there's only one way this can end up much worse for Annie, and it had to be given form. Well, yeah. I somehow doubt this would be worse for Annie, though. Or at least that she is less prepared to discuss this variant than Jack.
