The dynamics in this group are gradually getting more and more awkward. And the "faraway morning" part of the title takes on new meaning...

When I first loaded the page this morning, my cruddy Internet connection only loaded the top half of the page. So my first thought was, "...Okay. Okay. I can deal with this. It's not realistic for these kinds of things to happen all in one night."
Then I reloaded the page. "Wait...WHAT?!"
Also, somebody help me out here, I truly don't understand why Annie is smirking in panel 4.
And yes, Friday will never get here.

Also, somebody help me out here, I truly don't understand why Annie is smirking in panel 4. Cause she can't say it with a straight face. It seems to me she's trying to weasel out of getting kissed.

And yes, Friday will never get here. I still can't shake the feeling that Tom's gonna cut back to the other kids. Just to make people wait through the duration of the third story.

after some thought i'm fearful of what fridays strip will be if it's still on those 2 as this possible jack x annie scare isn't over yet til the chapter ends and we get back to the 1st real couple of the, Parley Smitty. (2nd couple is Margo and John, 3rd William and Janet)
i need to stop reading 4chan b/c it has made me think of this
Maybe Annie is tricking Jack into loving her so to lure him to coyote as some scheme to do something trickery/bad to the court with Jack's ability to get around the court unnoticed. Pretty sure even the Court is preparing/can detect if Coyote ever just shows up at random

I don't buy it. Something is wrong there. She may not be interested in him romantically, but she quite obviously does like him. Maybe she's just be putting on a show for Bud. In the meantime half of the Gunnerkrigg readership will die from asphyxiation while holding their breath in anticipation of Friday... i shall naively believe that their are more Parley Smitty shippers then Jack Annie so only 1/10th of the Gunnerkrigg readership will die from asphyxiation while holding their breath in anticipation of Friday... <closes eye's when going to site on friday>

She's definitely acquired a bit of a mean and manipulative streak during her time in the forest. Possibly it's a result of learning about Surma -- now that she knows that in a sense she *is* Surma, and that Surma did some very mean and manipulative things, she could be letting that side of her personality out more. Or possibly it's just that she feels she can afford to take a less guarded, more devil-may-care attitude towards the Court and its people now that she knows there's another place where she's accepted.
Or maybe this isn't really Annie at all. Coyote did mention at one point that he can possess creatures (and, unlike Rey, leave them alive afterward).

Weird...
I mean Jack was giving off all the "I like you" signals too...I mean, holding her hip?? People who just want to be friends don't do that...do they?

Perhaps Jack will explain that "Phew" by telling the next story? JACK: ...And so you see, Annie, as the descendent of an ancient spider elemental, it is my fate to die if I ever have a child.

I was going to hold off on Friday before giving any input, but the forums look to be surprisingly reasonable. First theory is more reasonable than the second, in my opinion. Rey would have noticed. But still an interesting idea. If Annie is still mad at Jack (for whatever reason), she might have gone through this whole smooth-moves deal just to hurt Jack at the last minute. Somewhat similar to Surma and Reynardine. Though that still doesn't explain Jack's "phew!" I think, given Annie's smirk, that she's playing games with Jack here. A sort of "not so fast, mister" thing. I'm going to hold out that she DOES like Jack, but wanted to throw him off balance. Which, in this case, failed spectacularly and we'll have to find out why on Friday. Maybe Jack was worried Annie WAS possessed, since she was acting so weird. The only other idea I have is that Jack was working for the Court, who wanted to spy on Annie. But Jack seems the least likely character for that. In any case, Friday should resolve the matter.

hmm, I can`t get these hand manipulations in first panels. but the general situation is so truly brilliant, i couldn`t even laugh when I first saw this page (well, i think i have already watched it for a thousand times and everytime it makes me crazy) can`t wait until friday, although i`m almost sure that annie will set him on fire. that`s exactly what her expression in the last panel points to

I'm surprised no one else has thought that Jack is just relieved that she's rejected him outright rather than acting like some sort of inscrutable alien robot who leaves him totally confused as to what to do next.
Uncertainty being worse than disappointment because it lingers by nature? You know?
And is Annie insulted as well as surprised? Pompous teenager, do you want people suffering over you?
"I don't like you very much" sounds like understatement for "I dislike you" rather than just "I don't like you as much as you would like me to".

we get back to the 1st real couple of the strip, Parley Smitty. (2nd couple is Margo and John, 3rd William and Janet) Actually William and Janet are the first couple of the strip, as we saw them swooning for each other back in Year One, before we had ever met Parley and Smitface.

Jones: You have 14 years of detention to look forward to. Jack: Aww man. Jones: Or you can try to seduce Antimony Carver for me. Jack: Aww man. Haha, I enjoy this theory. ;D Looking at panel four, I kind of expected Annie's next move to be to push Jack off the balcony. Then we'd get a shot of him plunging toward the ground, Annie running off in a fit of manacle laughter, and a forum full of people going "FUUUUUUU-" as Gunnerkrigg Court took a dramatically different turn.

Brilliant. I love this. Not necessarily rooting for it, but it's a great idea and I will not be disappointed if that's the way it goes. That's the key point here. What the hell did Annie expect? I love it that Jack stands up to her like this. There's a word we're dancing around here. I'll just go ahead and say it right out loud. Game. Jack's got Game. So does Coyote, btw.

...She was just flirting, people. It's obvious by her facial expression. Noone's rejecting anybody.
Whether Jack is really clueless to it or not or just trying to flirt back will be apparent by the next page.

Annie is bluffing; Jack sees her, then raises the ante. She's busted. I think Jack is too quick for her, this time, and will prove to be a worthy sparring partner in later encounters.

Gunnerkrigg Court is a touching story of bizarre teens growing up in an equally bizarre world. Each day is full of wonders and an important life lesson. Today's lesson is:
Don't try to play a playah.

I dunno. She seemed to like him well enough before he started to go all threatening. Not really. The pages you quote show that Annie fully expects the 2 tech nerds to like each other, and she was happy for kat. Ohhhhh, so that's what you meant. I thought you meant "liked" as in "would be totally chill with hanging out as friends sometimes" like, or "thinking he's a pretty cool guy" like, not as in (to quote the proverbial middle schooler) "like" like. Yeah, I guess you're right there, but still, it's not like she ever hated him. And heck, even Zimmy ships them, so this doesn't really come entirely out of the blue. Man, that paragraph just used up my "like" quota for the next month.

Anyone else think that maybe she was trying to explain to him that she didn't give him the stone as a romantic gesture?

Maybe this deals with the larger story arc of speculations regarding Annie and Kat's sexuality? Perhaps Jack's going to say something about how he didn't want to make Kat jealous and/or get in the way of that beautiful thing the two girls seem to have going for one another? Or he's saying "phew" in an "I should have known" kind of way - presumptuously believing that the only reasons she wouldn't "much like him" was because she didn't much like guys?

Or maybe this isn't really Annie at all. Coyote did mention at one point that he can possess creatures (and, unlike Rey, leave them alive afterward). Except he gave that ability to Reynardine, and can't use it until Reynardine gives it back (which he hasn't).
