Instructions on how not to panic are in the manual. Along with addition notes regarding strategies to cope with the intense feeling of fear Lindsey's appearance might inspire.

"Lindsey and Bud" That is definitely an Abyss call-out. Whee!Whoot! Cheers! As soon as I saw the name Bud, I thought of you! Tom, for the happiness your creation has brought to me, I wish upon you that a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Leeloo Multipass appears at your door and she's not only financially independent but she has a strange fascination with men who obsess about producing online comics. She is carrying take-home curry from the really good place and she promises to keep your bird feeders full for you.

Why do I have a feeling that along with people arguing on the real-world realities of this rig, Tom may have also put this map together due to the asking of a schematic from the Minecraft group

That is possible. Also, it could mean the same thing as false eyes which are a defensive adaption to trick predators who don't like to attack if they think they can't surprise their prey. Yikes! What kind of predator could even consider to attack Lindsey or one of her conspecifics? If you don't mind a complete WAG [and what else is this forum for?] I'll guess a predatory and mobile echinoderm or mollusca >60% the average merostomatazoan's mass.

If the instruction manual is anything like their real life counterpart, it'll only have two, maybe three useful pages. The rest is all gibberish not even the manual makers understand XD.

I wonder what those "not-eyes" are. Perhaps they are able to see (or some equivalent to seeing) into that other dimension mentioned... Perhaps just chemical receptors, or electroreceptors similar to the Ampullae of Lorenzini found on sharks.

It's a good thing that the Court has an accredited couples therapist to deal with all of the Relationship Drama that I assume will ensue now that the kids are getting older.
Incidentally, that cartoon drawing of Lindsey is somehow even creepier than the real thing.

What kind of predator could even consider to attack Lindsey or one of her conspecifics? Maybe not now, but when they were younger and much smaller, that would work. Tom seriously needs to fix the issue with nested quotes not working properly.

I love that Lindsey is "an accredited couples therapist", despite being unable to feel loneliness. That was my first thought as well. Empathy is an important part of being a therapist. The other thing that struck me is the design. It seems, at first sight, that the only place people have to interact with her is the moon pool. However, that is in the centre of the habitat, next to the main entrance (i.e. somewhere that is very busy). Consultations need to be somewhere that's quiet and offers privacy. If THAT keyboard is the only way that occupants can interact with Lindsey, then there is no suitable location for Lindsey to carry out consultations.

To be fair, Lindsey is a structial engineer first, couples therapist second. It's hardly surprising that she is much better suited for carrying out the former job over the latter. It's also not unusual for people in a certian type of organisation to end up in that situation, if you let on that you have additional skills, as I can say from bitter experience. It's a lot cheaper to get your engineer to do a bit of therapy than it is to hire an actual therapist with a proper room and stuff.

Maybe she has an office in another part of the dorm or elsewhere? We've only seen the moon pool and one wing of the dorm (which might be the left wing) and on the diagram, there is a chamber at the end of the right wing which might be used as a private room. From the looks of it, there is a large flatscreen above it and what looks like the outline of a tv on the floorplan view. If anything, it looks like Tom planned well ahead here. gary: Sometimes all they need is someone to talk to and help. Edit: Wait a minute, I have an idea that could explain some things. What if Lindsey is an organism that has two separate brains. See the speculation thread as I'll post there so as to not derail.

I can't help thinking today's comic is also paying tribute to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The style of the drawing and the way it's worded both make me think of that tome. I also can't be the only one who, upon reading "DO NOT PANIC!", immediately replied "...and carry a towel." Which is fitting since they are in a deep sea oil drilling platform.

Extra dimensional lobe... niceSame species as Lindsey? Which I guess we can call Merostomatazons. Not necessarily. We've already seen a man who married a tree. And have knowledge of inter-breeding with fire elementals

*Adds "The Abyss" to his Netflix queue. Again.* The Abyss doesn't hold up particularly well. It clearly marked the beginning of Cameron's descent into his awful "the power of love conquers all" phase.

Aww. I like the bit about her being unable to feel loneliness. Otherwise I would worry if she ever did get lonely.

Since Tom apparently keeps a buffer of comics built up, that's certainly a coincidence, but quite a spooky one.

Yikes! What kind of predator could even consider to attack Lindsey or one of her conspecifics? Some kind of sea-based roc perhaps? I didn't even realise Lindsey had two mouths til someone pointed it out, I thought the top one was a nose I bet Bud looks exactly the same as Lindsey, only he has a moustache.

Wonder how many kids have a heart attack over Lindsey? In the Gunnerkrigg? Oh, and provided is misspelled. Its not eays to tpye with pincers! I can't quite say why, but I really love the "*I am unable to feel loneliness." So, flying license by correspondence course, I see. Then again, maybe that was the perfect solution - if they can't resolve their issues, let 'em talk about it to a giant crab. Via voice-synth. If this won't help to get a clue, nothing will. It reminds me of Bobby's pigeon story It reminds me of Ur-Quan (brown ones). In how they weren't much on loneliness and all. I am Lindsey. I am one with many *fingers*. Now everyone will have *parties*. So much joy!!And I think Tom's a fan of psychonauts too.....[...] Bleh can't remember :/ Well...I love how many times "do not panic" and "it's perfectly safe" is said. got some major foreshadowing going on. Maybe giant crabs just don't understand the concept of tempting fate? I bet Bud looks exactly the same as Lindsey, only he has a moustache. Hey, it's not YAFGC! ;D

How come no one is commenting on the fact that they are 10 meters down? That still could count as bottom time for diving. Actually I'd say that the floors in the upper deck are at probably at least 20 meters (possibly as high as 25) and the floors in the lower deck at least 10 meters lower. Assuming the drawing is to scale. It is the depth at the surface of the moon pool that dictates what the air pressure must be. And that drawing of Lindsey is much more frightening than Lindsey is.

...that drawing of Lindsey is much more frightening than Lindsey is. Typical engineer's attempt to be user-friendly. Nothing says, "Run in circles, scream and shout", like the posted admonition that a dicey setup is "Perfectly Safe! Do Not Panic!"
