It's a giant, mutant crab! We're going to need a lot of butter. AND a really, really large crab mallet. Okay, all silly jokes aside, I am wondering where Crabby McCrab Monster came from. The Court just built this lovely new dorm. Surely they would have seen a giant crab monster if one was there.... or it normally stays way down deep and the construction disturbed its slumber. Also, this scene needs a little bit of this

I was debating checking GC before I went to bed. On the one hand, there wasn't much of a cliffhanger on Friday, and what if today was a cliffhanger and I had to wait longer for it to update? But no, I told myself. Tom only does huge cliffhangers on Friday, right? ...Wrong. *sigh* Wednesday is so far away!
Has it being a genuine threat, but Annie not rescuing her, or Annie rescuing her and Kat going "I said stop with the hijinks!" or otherwise not forgiving her been suggested yet?

What makes you think the dorms are new? (Or lovely, for that matter...) #1: sarcasm ;D Actually, I'm one of the few who don't seem to mind the design. #2: Annie's comment here always made me think "new" new, rather than just new to her.

HIT IT IN ITS WEAK POINT FOR oh wait someone got there already.
Given how these things have turned out in the past, it will probably turn out to be the dorm's friendly Security Crab. (Every school has one of those, right?)

< ** EDIT: I didn't notice Ryos already took the "giant crab summoning" theory. So, here's a link to Annie summoning it when she was playing with the crab monster controls . It's an SRZ6. ** > Another theory! It's the crab psychopomp! A crab just died and this thing takes it.

It's Bloop! Actually, given that that was my very first thought, I need to cut down on my sea-monster google-searches. Did the people who decide dorm-locations think that no one would notice, or did they decide that, by third year, it was about time that the students got used to having the oddness up and close, rather than at a distance? Either way, I reckon that last-year's students must have thrown snacks into the water for him; he's coming to beg for treats like a well-trained goldfish.

The biggest difficulty I had with the notion of something monstrous being in the water was that I couldn't imagine the Court having student dorms in that area, thereby endangering their students; we know that the staff are a lot more intelligent and competent than that. So now that it turns out that it exists, how is it that the Court tolerates its presence?
I can think of three possibilities (some more far-fetched than others, but which I'll include for the sake of completeness):
1. The crab-monster only recently came to the area (maybe it started off as an ordinary crab and was mutated into the present monster from the side-effects of the Court's etheric experiments), and the faculty don't know about it yet.
2. It's another prank to make the students' lives more "interesting", like the events in "Residential".
3. The least likely. The Court had to make a deal with a local water-god in order to maintain its presence in wherever the underwater dorms are, and the monster carrying off the occasional student is part of the deal. (Though a lot of the students are the children of the Court staff, I don't think the faculty would have agreed to that deal. Unless it was arranged by some mysterious off-stage higher-ups who outrank the Headmaster and who have no children.)

... imagine the Court having student dorms in that area, thereby endangering their students Remember this is a comic, and rules of common sense don't neccessarily apply to their full extent. Like for example the year 7 dorm having bunk beds that stack 30 units high and are accessible via a simple ladder. Not exactly very safe either.

One idea for it's origin is it could be from the forest. The binding on annies could have been more then just a binding and I can easily see coyote seeing summoning a giant monster into the court as a fun joke

Well, that marks the third time in this comic that I've loaded a page and nearly jumped out of my seat. This page didn't even make me scroll down first.

I can think of three possibilities 1. The crab-monster only recently came to the area 2. It's another prank to make the students' lives more "interesting" 3. deal with a local water-god 4. Simple: it is Mort, who finally came up with a better idea then the dino-demon

To Mr. Crab: Helooo~! (I'm sorry, that was terrible) Secondly, everyone keeps saying that Annie is going to swoop in and save Kat, but what if it's the other way around? I think Annie with her new forest-person attitude is going to be all "hey look a giant crab god! Let's make friends and play tag " not realizing how terrifying the thing really is, and Kat is going to have to sweep in with her awesome techno-powers and save Annie. Or, that's the family Annie stayed with in the forest, just coming in for a checkup.

That is one fricken GORGEOUS giant crab monster. So, so well done, Tom! Indeed! That was my first thought on tabbing over to the comic.

woah woah woah, how the hell did that thing only make a splish? or was it there the entire time and kats just really unobservant? No kidding! Also, can crabs float or is the water just really shallow (at least, relative to the crab's size) in that area? That is one fricken GORGEOUS giant crab monster. So, so well done, Tom! Edit: Also, I bet the button on the mystery console that Annie foolishly pushed called said giant crab monster. Oh yeah, didn't think of that. You may be right! I think I shall name the crab SRZ6 (nickname, "splish",) until/unless this theory is disproven.

Since crabs will eat small fishes, and Kat looks about the size of a small fish to a crab that size, I really hope Splish is a sentient and amiable giant crab!!

ANNIE: Oh, hey, it's Crustacia, one of my old psychopomp buddies! How ya doin' Crustacia? GIANT ENEMY CRAB: Oh, yanno, just chillin', Annie. Here on a job. ANNIE: A job? But wait! You're the psychopomp of friendship. If you're here on a job, that means that a friendship has just ended! KAT: ... GIANT ENEMY CRAB: ... ANNIE: Alternatively, Annie jumps in to save Kat at the last minute, but Kat is pissed at Annie because she totally had the situation under control and now they really aren't friends anymore.

GIANT SPACE FLEA OUT OF NOWHERE.
Also, that thing has *at least* twenty seven eyes. That's a lot of eyes.
Edit: and two mouths…

Oh and for the record, I officially DID NOT CALL it when I said "oh it has to be something small if it makes a 'splish' sound"
Yup! I was straight out wrong on that one! XD

I have some alternative theories:
1) It's going to take Kat but not harm her (yet). Annie comes back and thinks that Kat has left them because she's not there and starts getting depressed. Reynard puts her right and she then gets help to rescue Kat.
2) Jones rescues Kat and then gives Annie a dressing down for not being their to protect her.
3) The deal the Court have with it is to only come when called. What Annie typed in was gibberish to it but raised its curiousity. Kat works out that it wants feeding and spends the afternoon fetching food for it.

Oh. So it was a big Crab/spider/squid/rhino beetle thing who did that "splish"... WE NEED TO HIT ITS WEAK SPOT FOR MAXIMUM DAMAGE!! No, no. Its "spot weld it for i've made massage". It's just the friendly crab who has a timeshare at the bottom of the lake. He's come to say hi to his new neighbors. ...unfortunately, it chose a very wrong moment. Edit: Also, I bet the button on the mystery console that Annie foolishly pushed called said giant crab monster. A fair chance. So... dragline cyborg? Another theory! It's the crab psychopomp! A crab just died and this thing takes it. It looks freakish enough to be Ketrak's cousin, but then Kat wouldn't notice it without a special invitation. Secondly, everyone keeps saying that Annie is going to swoop in and save Kat, but what if it's the other way around? Again, it's hard to imagine how this can be non-lethal, but at the same time prevent Annie from leaving.

Yea, I was like WHOA when I saw the crab monster thing.
Anyways, that thing looks like it could easily tear into the dorms if it wanted to. Also, it is incredibly stealthy or moved very slowly if it really is the one that made the splish sound.
Oh yea, that claw looks like it is close enough to smash the catwalk right in front of Kat.
Could explain why we didn't see any fishes, they were either all eaten or are too scared of that crab monster.
About the chapter 33 tab, it appeared yesterday and Tom really has no reason to remove it since it redirects to the current page and reveals little. The simpilistic thumbnail design is a bit unusual for Tom though.
