Which would then beg the question of how a Native American god became connected with an Egyptian goddess, although it's probably been long enough since Coyote came to the Forest that he might have met other gods and goddesses in other places. Hey, problem here, The "Wandering Eye" mentioned here is a goddess of merryment and festivals, when she left the land was dull and boring, Jones has no emotion to be shown. I like the "one of Coyote's lost eyes" theory much better.

I thought of Ra's eye when I read this page, but then also recalled Odin sacrificing one of his eyes in return for a drink from Mimir's well. Nothing is mentioned of what happened to the eye afterwards, or if it did any wandering - but if Jones is linked to Odin, that could give a new perspective to Brinnie being mistaken for a long time by the readers for a younger version of Jones.... no man, he gave his eye to the guardian of the well, Odin has all seeing eyes, and the guardian wanted that power. Later the guardian became one of Odin's advisors, died in his service a (beheading), and was reanimated by odin (just the head though).

I could buy "wandering eye" as a reference to Hathor or Mut. I have long speculated that Jones is some variation of Galatea and both Hathor and Mut are fertility goddesses (or aspects of the same, the Egyptians liked to blend things). In fact, if you read the Hathor article all the way to the end you see that the Greeks equated Hathor with Aphrodite. Okay, this from Wikipedia's Mut article seems oddly relevant to your idea: There are temples dedicated to Mut still standing in modern-day Egypt and Sudan, reflecting the widespread worship of her, but the center of her cult became the temple in Karnak. That temple had the statue that was regarded as an embodiment of her real ka. The Muut / Mut thing still seems too weird to be true, but considering Mut appears to have actually, canonically, *been* a stone golem, and Sekhmet, one of the goddesses Mut got mixed up with, was a warrior woman who got sick of the egyptian pantheon and lit out of there for a nice long time, it sounds increasingly plausible as a backstory for Jones, with of course the huge glaring exception that there was someone named Jones we never saw in the "Ties" chapter, who was implied to be a young teen. Anyone know if Tom has ever flatly stated that they were the same person? It sounds like Jones I could have died somehow, and ageless wandering Egyptian Goddess Golem could have stepped in and taken her place as Jones II- or even something more complicated than that. Ancient Egyptian gods tended to all have shapeshifting powers, after all, and Sekhmet is explicitly stated to have been a lioness for a time. Lending to the "Stolen name" thing Coyote was saying earlier. When she left (if she did) she might not wanted to be found or even known as someone special, she might have been taking names to fit in for a long time, no idea about the weight thing though.

Jones' line should have been, "Come with me if you want to live." But it's interesting to hear Coyote accusing her of stealing names, when he's previously been so cavalier about stealing bodies. Your name is your identity, it is what people know you by and it is the one thing everyone has. Coyote is a shapeshifter, taking your shape is something he does by nature, but your name is personal, even for him, maybe that is what is happening here

www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=540Let's not forget this page. Unless this is somehow a DIFFERENT Jones, then "Wandering Eye" was probably an adolescent at the time of this page. And it being a different Jones strikes me as rather strange, because Eglamore pining after two people called "Jones" in his lifetime seems almost impossible, especially from a writing standpoint. Either that or Eglamore wanted an adult woman to join the picture (no), and has remained in love with her as he aged but she hasn't (getting stranger), and she's an immortal with (apparently) romantic feelings for a mortal she has known since he was a teenager (possible (given Reynard) but still creepy). So long story short, Jones probably ages. Whether that means she reincarnates or what, I don't know. But she (it? Doesn't want to be given a gender specific title) probably ages.

Why wouldn't he want an older woman? It's incredibly common for teens to develop a crush on someone who is much older than them I think he has remained in love with her as he aged but she hasn't and she's an immortal with (apparently) romantic feelings for a mortal she has known since he was a teenager. It happens often in shows with mortals hanging out with immortals, they just go out with whatever is near there mental age or physical appearance.

Tom has also said that Jones was not a student at the Court.

In fact, I never said it was strange that he could have a crush on her. And true, her (possibly) romantic inclinations aren't really that strange. The problem I see is that Eglamore wants her in their student picture. Everyone there is students, getting student pictures. It's just weird for an adult to get in with 6 teenagers because one of said 6 teenagers has a crush on her. And even if HE'S weird enough to want her in the picture, I don't think Donny would respond the way he did if she was a teacher/adult. He says "Eh, you know Sonya can't stand her." That doesn't sound like his response if she was an authority figure of some sort. In my opinion, this dialog doesn't match up with her being an adult at this time. Is there a possibility I'm mistaken, certainly. But it just doesn't sound right. Also, Tom said she wasn't "taught" at the Court. It doesn't mean she didn't live and/or visit there when she was young. Just saying.

I think that Tom simply put that mention of Jones in the chapter to make it clear that the "third girl in the photograph" was *not* Jones, and that we shouldn't read too much into it.

I think there is a fair distinction to be made in Coyotes words. He clearly states Jones stole a name, not a life.

I think there is a fair distinction to be made in Coyotes words. He clearly states Jones stole a name, not a life. It's hard to say what "stealing a name" means. If Jones just takes on a new name from time to time, she's not stealing anything. Somehow, there must be someone who previously 'owned' the name in order for Jones to steal it. That means she has the name and the previous person doesn't. Maybe the previous person still had the name but Jones presented herself as that person. Ever see 5th Element? You could say David tried to "steal" Corbin Dallas' name. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV_eGm1qgGs

What I was trying to get at is, I don't think Jones committed identity thief, or anything negative like that. She stole a name like somebody steals a cool internet handle. To the Wandering Eye the name "Jones" must have significance.
I imagine she steals names alot. It's just one of her cute idiosyncrasies

Names tend to be things of power... In several versions of magic, knowing something or someone's true name gave one power over it/them. Stealing a name may mean something much darker in this world...
