Maybe Ysengrin saw Annie and knew it was Renard who upset her, and he's all 'I know how that feels.' Or he remembers when she reached out to him instead of fleeing in terror from his fish breah growl.

Maybe Ysengrin saw Annie and knew it was Renard who upset her, and he's all 'I know how that feels.' Or he remembers when she reached out to him instead of fleeing in terror from his fish breath growl. Those last two frames emphasise how small Annie still is, even considering how big Ysengrin himself might be. Meta Notice: does anybody know whether the built-in spell-checker on the board itself (i.e. the one you get when you click the "Spell Check" button next to the "Preview" button) can be taught that "Ysengrin" is not a spelling error for "Sangria"?

Is it just me, or Ysengrin isn't... shaking?

My first reaction, like so many others, was also 'Awwwwwwww' but now that I've started to contemplate the page I won't be entirely convinced that Ysengrin is actually showing sympathy towards Annie until the next update. There wasn't any mocking or snarkiness on his part, but this chapter has been full of twists so far ....
Oh boo, I'll just shut up and enjoy the wonderful page <3

This is my new favorite page. No question about it.
Ok, "Smashed death ray" is still up there. But still. This is just so cute.

I also have a tendency to go "D'awww" at this page. I think since Annie saw him in his most vulnerable and didn't kick him while he was down, so to speak, he treats her more as a creature of the forest. Not exactly with kindness, but not with contempt either. A very beautiful and entertaining page today, Tom. You never fail to impress.

Ysengrin can be very personable when spankies are not at issue.

Obligatory D'Awwww. Seems a bit in conflict with what Coyote said earlier about Ysengrin hating the lot of humans. Methinks there will be yet another shocker before this chapter ends. See, I think that Ysengrin hates not humans as individuals, but the societal, "civilized" aspect of being human. Remember, you hate what you don't understand. And right now, Annie is not being "civilized". She's being natural as it can be, as an individual.

I wonder if this was part of Coyote's plan to drive Annie away from the Court and favour the forest instead. Of course, there really isn't anywhere ELSE for her to go if she wanted to get away from the Court for a while.

So, Antimony has seen Ysengrin in a moment of vulnerability, for which he immediately forgave her when he realised it was Coyote's doing. So there's no reason for him to be harsh with her now; they have no bad blood. And now he's seeing her in a moment of vulnerability, and so it's natural for him to show compassion.
Also: Awwwwww.

I wouldn't say he's showing compassion, but he's definitely being a lot more tolerant toward her. It could be that he was sent by Coyote to fetch her and he just decided the fastest way to do that would be to carry her there.

It could be that he was sent by Coyote to fetch her and he just decided the fastest way to do that would be to carry her there. We don't even see his face, so it's definitely true that we can't know for sure whether he's feeling any kind of compassion toward her. But I can't help but look at the transition between panels four and five -- the way she reaches for him and he gently picks her up -- and not attribute at least something like compassion. Well, who knows. A part of me wonders whether Annie and Ysengrin may have the kind of relationship that Surma and Renard had (minus the somewhat creepy infatuation). Renard the trickster seems to fit the carefree Surma; Ysengrin the dour-until-enraged may fit Annie.

It's also curious how both Ysengrin and Rey tried to hurt Annie at first (when they met), and grew to feel genuine compassion for her afterwards.

I am still amazed at how emotion is conveyed without a single word being said. These last few pages have been some of the most nerve wracking and emotional I have ever read.
That being said I still want to know what happened with Surma and darn it all if this waiting ain't ticking me off. and obligatory D'awwww.

As much as I love the idea of good ol' Chuckles being a big softie, I wonder if he doesn't just see this as following Coyote's orders. Like Coyote told him to help Annie if she ever came, and he sees this as simply doing what Coyote asked rather than as an act of compassion.

Well we have not seen Ysengrin's face. He could just be indifferent to the whole situation or merely tolerating her out of respect.

This is the direction that Tom's comment threw us in. “A shoulder to cry on” is essentially “a compassionate vis-a-vis”. Misguided or not, we’ll keep this state of mind until the next update, at least

I agree that what Ysengrin is probably feeling most toward Annie on this page is respect. When he confronted her for "spying" on him in his weakness, she stood her ground. Fearfully, yes, but she didn't run or assume a posture of submission. And now she has shown that she has truly begun to unlock her mother's power, and used it in an act of defiance against what he would see as a common enemy.

Annie's probably going for a holiday in the forest. She's already looking a bit better. Not angry anymore. Just sad. Annie should be very, very tired by now. Physically, emotionally, and maybe magically. Ysengrin had no defense against her sad face XD An innate reflex. It's called " puppy eyes" for a reason. Interesting, will Court(or just Jones) continue to train Annie for a post of the medium after this incident? Who? Jones? She can teach advanced classes in "Not Giving A Damn" as an elective course. Why such trifles could bother her? All together now: Awwwwwww... Miri, 10.12.2010, 12:00am #

I think Ysengrin has genuine compassion toward Annie, but he'd rather not express it actively. It's moments like these that remind me of when Annie saw him in the etherium.

While I do believe that Ysengrin is showing Annie some compassion here despite his gruff exterior, it strikes me that if he ever tried to hurt her, Annie would be one of the few who could strike back at Ysen in kind. He is wearing a suit made a wood, in a forest afterall, and as a recent demonstration has showed us, Annie can have a great deal of fire at her disposal in a very short amount of time.

The most I'm willing to grant to Ysengrim is that he bears Annie no active ill-will, and a modicum of respect, knowing her compassion for him.
Not that I have anything against him, simply that I do not want to shade him with emotions not yet in evidence.
===
Almost certainly, he is there on Coyote's behalf, not his own.
===
The last time Annie snuggled up to him like that, it was... not to comfort him, exactly, but to express her compassion for him.
Now she seeks her own comfort, and this, I think, may be something of a surprise to him, and stir feelings he has not had in a long time, perhaps ever.
===
Almost certainly, Coyote knows about Surma. I've been wondering if Annie realizes that. I think she does, but does not blame him for keeping it from her because she expects nothing else from him.
She trusted the Court, however, and they betrayed her. (At least, so she will see it.)
===
I'm pretty sure Coyote knows she's very angry with the Court. I wonder if he knows why?
===
Never, I think, has Annie looked so child-like.
