Also it's probably the best way for Annie to salvage herself from this... If Surma knew she would die after giving birth to a child than that means that Surma loved Annie more than her own life; It's not that Annie killed her mother so that she could live, its that her mother sacrificed herself so that Annie could live. This is beautiful and you should be proud.

Whoooo. And now the Burly Brawl is finished. I suppose the question now is... will Rey keep going on the attack, or will things start to simmer down? There's not much else to be said, and based on that last panel I don't think Annie is going to be in much of a mood to make a riposte. Then again, this chapter has been full of surprises, and we still have yet to see Kat make an entry on to the scene.

Oh man, and here I thought this chapter would be about Annie learning a fancy new fire trick... I think Kat's "Be friends" will not work this time.

Can't wait until Weds! And for all of you who called it: GOOD JOB! Wow! I never saw this coming, and that, I have to sadly say, is RARE for that to happen to me.

Might it have happened with Surma's mother? Does look that it may happen every generation. Quoth Formspring: Is Surma's mother still alive? No, she died. That's kind of integral to the entire story.[edit] Mr. Siddell has since backed off this statement in Twitter, saying that he misinterpreted the question as being, "Is Antimony's mother still alive" and that it is not as important as everyone thinks it is. Please note that to date there has not been a repudiation of the statement about Surma's mother. [/edit]

I was really hoping that that theory would turn out not to be so. But, it is. Damn. Yeah, this has gotta be one of the worse days for a character in the history of bad days. Well, other than the ones where people died. Oh god all the tears. Was not expecting that. Well, we all knew this could only end in tears. Or blood. Or tears of blood.

Who thinks that both of them will break down, blubbering into one another's arms before the chapter's up? No one? Kiiiiinda a joke. A bad joke, I'll admit. Wow, I'm surprise Tom revealed that much on his formspring.

On a non-story note, I like the touch of having the background warp around Annie and Rey. Really adds to how mind-shattering this revelation must be to Annie.

Hoo boy ;_;
Some heavy stuff being said here. The one line that hits me deep is:
Reynardine: "That's why no guide would claim her! There was nothing to take!"
When you read it in context, and with Renard's delivery...the implications are pretty horrible. You can see it in Renard, this is painful for him too.
Time to break out the worry hat...

This is just speculation (not necessarily "wild")--but what if Anthony disappeared so he could continue research on Surma's condition without interruption (i.e. raising a kid) in order to save Annie should the condition ever pass on to her (i.e. she makes a baby)? Would kind of explain why he is avoiding contact with her.
Anyway, very sad and heartbreaking page. I hate to say it, but I think Annie deserved it after the way she treated Rey. She has to learn that there are consequences for just running your mouth without any regard for the other person =(

You know, this makes Annie's line in the last panel of 95 seem like huge foreshadowing now. And, I kinda get the feeling both of them are out of retorts now, unless Annie wants to bring up this incident again. We are going to see what happens when they are left nursing their wounds.

I don't think anyone deserves to hear that they were the cause of their parent's death, especially in this manner.
If you think back, Rey was insulting Annie's father first. She just responded in kind.

Rey started this by ragging on Anthony, and when the 13 year old girl he taunted lashed out at him, he told that 13 year old girl that she caused her beloved mother to DIE. Real nice going, there, Rey.
Incidentally, I suspect Rey is not entirely right here (unbenownst to him). Surma still had to be guided- by Annie, but nonetheless she still had a spirit to guide.
The thing which Annie needs to hear (and probably will from someone; Jones or Anja or Eglamore, or even from Anthony himself - how close are we now to "almost 2 years"?) is that if everyone knew this was possible, then so did Surma- and she chose to have Annie, and loved her and protected her to the very end, and that was Surma's decision, which Annie cannot blame herself for. She should also hear that from Rey, but he's being a miserable bastard so she won't hear it from him.

Oh hey, no surprise, Renard is a bitter, spiteful douchebag.
Are there still people who think he's a GOOD GUY? Or even 'good' in generally?
These people should be hit with a rolled-up newspaper.

What a shock, people that care about one another can say things they regret later when they're hurt. How dare these characters act like actual characters, as opposed to perfect beings.

I wonder what emotion Reynardine is expressing here- he seems angry, but is he angry at Annie because of what she said, or angry at her for "killing" Surma? Or is he just pissed in general over what happened to Surma? I wonder how this is going to affect Annie's relationship with her dad.....

Sigh... Well, see, when a daddy loves a mommy... That's not what I was getting at at all. Now that we know what killed Surma all we're waiting on now is someone who can provide the details into the how, why of that etheric process. Sort of like how we got info on blinker stones from Anja and Coyote, and details about the power station from Jones and Jack. Tthe implication here is that Surma's friends knew about this condition before Surma left the Court and cut off contact with them. Renard's hatred of Anthony seems partially founded on his dislike of a man who still had a child with Surma despite knowing what it'd do to her.

Perhaps in this we also have the reason why Surma left Eglamore for Anthony. If she was dead set (no pun intended) on having a baby, and Eglamore refused....

I think we are missing something here.. In the plush form, Reynard is always cantankerous and prone to irrationality. Annie refused to let him change to wolf form first.. I think he was planning on being a lot nicer in the other shape.

I'm a little confused here. By the content of several posts it seems that some people were actually surprised at the content of Rey's revelation, but I don't see how that's possible after the build up from the last strip. Given the direction their conversation had been going, there really didn't appear to be any other "whammy" that he could have pulled to cap off this magnificent emotional train wreck.
...
I will admit that I didn't expect to find out why none of the psychopomps showed up to claim Surma. That was a nice bonus, and cheers to Tom for savaging our heartstrings once again.
