Hey, here's a theory: Annie is going to ask Jack if he'll watch over Reynard for the summer. He's pretty much her only friend (using that term loosely) who knows about him and is staying in the Court all summer. That would work if she trusts him enough and it would do Annie some good to get out of here for a while.

Hey, here's a theory: Annie is going to ask Jack if he'll watch over Reynard for the summer. He's pretty much her only friend (using that term loosely) who knows about him and is staying in the Court all summer. That depends on how much they've "talked since then". I don't think Annie trusts Jack enough to leave Rey in his care over the summer. I also doubt Reynard would want to be stuck all summer with a weirdo that caused him a ton of pain. Still, it's a simple way of testing Jack's trustworthiness and a new person for Mr Stuffed to interact with. I can already imagine a bonus page with Rey & Jack shenanigans.

Here's some not-entirely-baseless speculation(and my apologies if it's already been proposed):
Anthony Carver will return on the day of Annie's departure to bring her with him to wherever the heck he's been.
My logic here is even he has to feel guilty about abandoning her after so many years.

This time last year (in comic) Annie said she'd wait for him to call, not knowing she wouldn't hear from him for another 2 years...

Of course that raises the question of whether 2 years is exact or not. Will Anthony return at the end of the next school year, over the summer, or even later? I'd hazard a guess towards sooner rather than later myself.

Oh Jack, if only that were true... About his dad's opinion of Surma, I mean. Anja and Donlan can confirm that she was indeed nice, but chances are Hyland never thought so. Yeah, another callback joke. Jack didn't specify whether Hyland Sr. looked around funny, as if suspecting a flying man behind the window. Of course, in those years he could change his opinion, notice that, ahem, "she's all grown up", have the little jerk dialysed out of his system, become nostalgic or something. in order for Hyland Sr to have mentioned that he knew Annie's mother, he had to have been having a conversation with Jack about Annie. And one wonders how that topic came up between them! If Jack wanted to talk with someone about all this weird stuff that hit him, Annie was a major participant of the story, so... All the people seem to have loved the beautiful Surma, both in the Court and the Forest. Surma, the ultimate queen bee? Come to think of it, and what we know of the fiery whirlwind she was - probably she used to see everyone dancing in circles around her (as usual, except the guy she wanted to), yes. Which, by the way, could drop the perceived significance of Renard's affection, about as much as his reputation. So, my "sad miscommunication" theory goes up again. Awwww, poor Jack got the brushoff. Actually I'm suprised he isn't going after Kat given their mutual interest in electronics, but opposites seem to attract in the court, so I shouldn't be. ...and, potentially, ether-tech. Even though he was sort of pulled into this. Same here. Maybe Annie thought there was something between him and Kat too? Or maybe we have a "normal" love triangle at last (as opposed to James|Renard|Antony -?- Surma case). I also doubt Reynard would want to be stuck all summer with a weirdo that caused him a ton of pain. Oh, don't worry about Renard... ;D Though this depends on whether he'd be in a reasonable mood and not hold Jack responsible, or in a foul mood and simply want to vent it on such a tempting target.

Take a chill pill there Casey, cheezus. Not everyone has the same definition for words as you do, especially words which are colloquial terms and are subject to reinterpretation based on geographic locale and individual whim. By my personal definition, Annie is a straight up, triple-A gold standard Ice Queen. This is based on the fact that in social situations, she is (insert rapper accent here) ICE COLDDDDDD.(snip) An Ice Queen, on the other hand, may not necessarily know how to act differently, and in fact is so universally ICE COLDDDDDD that she has risen above her frosty peers and become 'queen' of the attitude itself. It's honestly the most polite way of saying a gal don't know shit about conversation skills. Which, I'm sorry, is Annie to a T. Nothing personal, bassar, but the honestly most polite way of saying a gal doesn't have conversational skills is "she doesn't have conversational skills". Or you know "she's socially awkward". I've never seen 'Ice Queen' used as anything other than derogatory. No offense to the original commenter either, but I don't think their exclamation over Ice Queen Annie was supposed to be neutrally descriptive. They said it like something they disapprove of. It's also NOT accurate. Annie is shown being open, friendly, and warm under numerous occasions. Primarily with Kat, who's she's most familiar with, and etheric or non-human beings like Mort, Coyote, Reynardine, Robot, and Shadow 2. She was also friendly and smiling when she first met Jones, has grown increasingly relaxed around Parley and Smitty, and was very pleasant when they met with the Power Station group. Sure, it didn't occur to her that Kat may have felt excluded from the camping group by her desire to keep Annie company, but as soon as it was pointed out, Annie insisted they go socialize and was show smiling and chatting a few panels later. Annie is emotionally and socially reserved. She's introverted and would rather keep close to one friend than party with the crowd. And yes, she's really awkward and uncomfortable with being hit on and touched by a boy she's had problems with in the past and is still just getting to know. But this is all far, far away from Ice Queen --- even under the relatively 'neutral' definition of some who is "frosty" and doesn't know how to deal with social situations. Also, $5 says that when Tom displays the main page comments, at least half a dozen will call Annie "cold", "Ice Queen", and/or "Frigid" for not being sweet, warm, and welcoming of a boy's affection.

Having read the word 'introvert' so often, I checked the definition to see that I'm understanding it correctly Yes, I believe Annie prefers less social activities. I also prefer less social activities and I am not an ice queen. I also see no evidence that Annie's preferences are greater than mine to the point she earns the name Ice Queen. She's just a plain old, run of the mill, introvert... and there is nothing wrong with that. Blame the spider for starting that whole thing. The spider was a rude bugger.

To be fair to basser, even if Annie doesn't want to engage in a romantic relationship with Jack, her demeanor in the last two pages has been fairly cold. And, though the colloquial meaning of Ice Queen is definitely derogatory, the TV Tropes definition is not.

How is she doing anything that is different from what any other awkward teenager who hasn't experienced these feelings before would do? Okay now seriously, even if we were to take TVTropes of all things to have ANY encyclopedic value whatsoever, which I don't... did you even read the entry? Not derogatory? From the entry: "The Ice Queen is a woman who is cold, in any or all of the possible interpretations of what "cold" means. She has a cold heart, and a frosty demeanor. Hence the name "Ice Queen", which is often used as an insult, particularly by scorned men. [...] The Ice Queen is unapproachable by a sane man, as she will simply tear out his heart."

Annie isn't aware of the events shown in Ties, as far as we know, so this is likely the first she's heard of Jack's father. Right now she's probably thinking, "So, what, this means my mother was in a love heptagon? Coyote damn it." Which would be followed up shortly by "Thank goodness Mr. Hyland's still alive, or this would be really awkward." I have to admit, I'm still half-expecting next page Jack to be like, "Yeah, my dad and your mom got along great! My uncle, on the other hand..." XD I just think it's interesting that this relationship - which we've only seen one tiny snippet of - is coming up so shortly after the reminder that Reynardine killed someone (which is easy to forget, but going back and reading the comic over, it feels kind of like the elephant in the room). Only 1 school year til we meet Anthony! That's, what, another 500 pages? Yeah, I can wait that long. Just watch me. Pull up a lawn chair. We'll wait together.

And, though the colloquial meaning of Ice Queen is definitely derogatory, the TV Tropes definition is not. Regarding the TV Tropes definition -- are you sure? Because on the page is says, quote "Hence the name "Ice Queen", which is often used as an insult, particularly by scorned men. Due to the Double Standard, the Ice Queen is Always Female. (Males are just Jerkasses)." There's also no specific examples allowed on the page (just directions to subtropes), which is what TV Tropes tends to do with Tropes that lean more toward the derogatory to cut down on edit wars. Of course, this change may be fairly recent. Regarding Annie's behavior -- oh, she totally closed off in those panels. Though I disagree with it, I see why bassar went for the "cold" descriptor in this case. More than anything, I was taking exception to the assessment that Annie is always the coldest of the cold. Mostly, I have a lot of empathy for Annie's position. Jack's move of reaching into her personal space to cover the hand on her lap was inherently intimate. He may have meant it in all the nicest possible ways, but it's still taking liberty with Annie's body. It only makes sense that she would defensively withdraw. However, she also didn't snap at him, or accuse him of anything, or shove him away, or shut down the conversation and run. She just quietly pulled away to show the contact wasn't welcome and persisted talking to him. I feel empathy for Jack, too. Here's a nice, pretty girl that he had a rocky start with, who put herself at risk to help him. He wants to show his gratitude (and possibly, his attraction) and being only 13/14, he's no better at reading "physical contact not welcome" vibes than Annie is at knowing the "101 Polite Ways To Tell A Guy 'Don't Touch Me'". That's why the whole situation is so adorably High School teenager awkward. Neither of them knows what they're doing. I've just seen conversations about situations like these before, and it's inevitable that the girl will get the most flak for "not considering the poor guy's feelings" and either accepting/tolerating his overtures, or asking him to back off in some special, warm, sweet, charming way that won't hurt his feelings or lead him on. (Hint: it doesn't exist). So I'm a little cynical

Oh Jack, if only that were true... About his dad's opinion of Surma, I mean. Anja and Donlan can confirm that she was indeed nice, but chances are Hyland never thought so. All we ever see of Hyland Sr. is one scene from when he was 13 years old. I'm sure there was one day in all of our childhoods that, when looked at alone, would make us look like horrible people. People change, especially at that time in life. "It was Hyland, sir! He's a jackass!" "I'm not blind, or stupid. I know how people are around here."Hyland Sr might have changed when he grew up, I'll give you that, but if Professor Thorn agrees that Hyland Sr is "a jackass", I think it's fair to assume that he's basing his assessment on more than that one action. It's probably a safe bet that Hyland Sr had at least some history of his mouth getting him in trouble. And knowing Surma (what little we do still know about her, especially her reaction to Hyland running his mouth), I don't think she and Hyland Sr actually got along. What wynne said seems closer to the truth than "oh they just had one bad day CLEARLY THEY BECAME FRIENDS LATER". People generally don't take a liking to you after you call them a cu-- *WHUD*

Hey, it is cold out here. Well. At the very least, Annie seems to be improving from her attitude toward Mort and her reaction to Reynardine's comment. Or maybe she's just cutting Jack some slack because of the whole craziness thing. Still. Progress. Hey, here's a theory: Annie is going to ask Jack if he'll watch over Reynard for the summer. He's pretty much her only friend (using that term loosely) who knows about him and is staying in the Court all summer. I actually thought of something like this. Given how suspicious she must currently be towards the Court, it'd make sense that she'd try to leave him with someone she knows. At the very least, it'd throw the Court for a loop. However, as has been pointed out, Annie does not seem to completely trust Jack. Perhaps she'll just give him the box and tell him not to open it, but keep an eye on it for her? Of course, that sort of thing would just make him want to open it even MORE...

I can picture Hyland Sr. reading his newspaper..."Oh I remember her... real weirdo... they moved her out of the freak house..which was a mistake." *turns page* "I remember giving her boyfriend a real beating this one time...."
Which translates into "...he said she was real nice..." cause Jack's not stupid!

Here's something to speculate on. If Annie were looking for someone to watch over Renard while she was gone, why not ask Jones? Hell, why not ask Eglamore? Think about it.
(as an aside, I don't think that Annie thinks that Rey needs someone to look after him. But that's just my guess.)

I'd expect Jones over Eglamore. Annie didn't exactly approve of his treatment of Rey the last time around, and she's seen that Rey and Jones have a rapport.

(as an aside, I don't think that Annie thinks that Rey needs someone to look after him. But that's just my guess.) He'd get bored though, unless Annie left her blinker stone behind. Imagine having to spend the whole summer there alone. My guess is that Annie will basically leave Rey to his own devices, and he can hang out with Jack and the remaining staff.

Well, Annie has taken responsibility for Rey so it's not just baby sitting him. Jones could handle him just fine and I doubt Rey would mind but I can easily see her saying she does not want the responsibility, thank you.
Rey and Eglamoure have attained mutual civility but I wouldn't push that too far... and Rey would indeed push that too far as soon as he could.

Here's something to speculate on. If Annie were looking for someone to watch over Renard while she was gone, why not ask Jones? Hell, why not ask Eglamore? Think about it. Eglamore? Nonononono! Not only does Annie still seem to have a small vendetta against Eglamore, Reynardine and he do NOT get along. On any level. And, if it comes to keeping Rey from the court, Eglamore is the worst possible person to give him to. Though, come to think of it, loaning him to the last person who tried to extract and imprison Reynardine may not be the best choice either. Jones, though... I could see Jones. Rey and Annie both trust Jones emphatically, and she is neutral enough to be depended on. The only difficulty would be finding Jones and asking her. She seems to be hard to find. (as an aside, I don't think that Annie thinks that Rey needs someone to look after him. But that's just my guess.) ...Eh.... yes and no. Reynardine may not need looking after, but he may need hiding. As in, if the Court wanted to try something with him while Annie was gone. (Burn the doll or whatnot). He's probably capable of defending himself, but I don't know if Annie allows him to fight court officials. And Eglamore, at least, could match him. In either case, Annie's newfound suspicion of the Court might make her unreasonably paranoid on this subject. Even if Rey DOESN'T need a guardian, Annie might still find one to ensure his safety.

Burning (or otherwise harming) Reynardine could be tricky - grabbing him to do the deed could break Annie's ownership over him, allowing him to jump out of that body and into something else before they could burn it.
A couple of other thoughts prompted by today's page:
The mere fact that they're having summer holidays in the outside world suggests that whatever trouble prompted the Founders to come to Gillitie Wood must have died down; the Donlans certainly don't seem to expect any hostile responses in Scotland or Paris.
With new evidence that students at court generally send their own children there when they grow up, and work there, I wonder if we'll ever see cases of ex-students who defy that pattern and refuse to send their children to the Court. (Assuming that the Court doesn't deny them any choice on the matter.)
