Eglamore: "I just wish Jones could've been in the photo with us." Donlan: "...dude, you made Jones up in year 7, remember?" A+

When Jack started acting crazy there had been zero mention of whitelegs; when Sivo!Reynardine showed up there had been zero mention of demons who can possess people and objects through their eyes. I think it's safe to say that Tom doesn't always explain that certain kinds of creatures exist in the GC universe before inserting such creatures into the story. And the fans are in no position to know or even make educated guesses about these creatures until they appear in the story. I can guess that all of GK is a dream being had by a genetically engineered mongoose napping in the cargo hold of a pink Vogon constructor ship while Liberace plays the banjo, but the chances of this turning out to be true can't possibly be greater than, say, 25%. Which is why I have the common sense to not voice theories like that unless there's some compelling evidence in the strip to back it up.

Which is why I have the common sense to not voice theories like that unless there's some compelling evidence in the strip to back it up. Here's how I see the situation: Your contention is that the photographs were for students only, so when the characters suggest they could include Jones they're stating she was a student around their own age. My contention is that it isn't unreasonable for some students to include a favorite teacher with them in a photograph since it obviously wasn't formalized class photo (see the "any other group" line). Thus, Jones could be an adult teaching at the Court and still be included in their photograph. Seeing as there's no place where the comic states or suggests it was exclusive to Gunnerkrigg Court students our opinions on the matter are equally valid; they're simply operating on differing assumptions, neither of which has been confirmed by the comic.

My goodness, people. We have the wiki for this kind of information. Oh look, right there: Source. No, see, Mezzaphor, you have to understand, that's the IRONY of the whole situation: this reference has -already been given- to Zylonbane and he's STILL arguing that it's meaningless and that Jones was still a student at the Court and was just somehow never actually taught there.

How could Zimmy and Gamma have an entry in the science fair if they are not students? They're in the same grade as Annie, although Gamma is a year older than they are. Zimmy is always in uniform... messy but its still her uniform.

You're not pickin' up what I'm puttin' down. It was mostly just a flippant remark, but there's some evidence that Zimmy largely just wanders the school grounds and does what she likes. I believe Jones even made a comment as to their leniency with regards to Zimmy's coming and going.

I think Zimmy does attend classes on her own because she wants to and she's proud of her work. I imagine if you'd ask her if she attended classes, she'd throw a fit... "' O'course, I go to classes! I AIN'T NO DUMMY!!!" "Hey you, Carver, wanna see what the winning entry looks like?"

(in a side note: Whoever got me started reading Digger, thank you) Funny you should mention that Jayne, as that's the page I was viewing just before coming here just now. Back a week or two ago when it was suggested, I read through the whole archive over several days, and now I have something to look forward to each weekday between it and GC. I agree with whomever said that Tom and Ursula should get together and have the most talented babies on the planet.

That she wouldn't need a rune to get to a classroom at the Court; she might, however, need one to get to a classroom in Valhalla. In other words, it appears that Brinnie was taking (at least some of) her lessons outside of the Court. While she was at the Court in the company of Surma et al., she was not necessarily being taught at the Court. Jones could have had a similar arrangement, which could put her as a (relative) youth at the Court while not actually being taught at the Court.

I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but, that's bolstering a baseless assumption with a baseless assumption. If I had the power to ZAM form place to place, you better believe I would ZAM from my room down to the kitchen and back! Who wouldn't? I'm not saying that she -wasn't- headed home to Dad, I'm saying there is no direct evidence to support that. Plus, students aren't allowed to leave school grounds, that we do know. Valhalla certainly qualifies as off school grounds.

Really, all I'm trying to say is that we can't rule out the possibility that Jones was at GK while she was a student, despite Word of Tom that she was never taught there. That doesn't make it probable, merely possible.

That doesn't make it probable, merely possible. Yes, "very unlikely" does not equal "impossible"... but I'd still put that theory waaaaay back on the bottom shelf... If she was a regular kid who just lived in GC, but not a student attending GC, she's have to be a student of the forest. If that's true, she'd have to stay at the forest after getting a new body like the suicide fairies.

Why would she have to be a student of the forest? That doesn't seem like a sound conclusion. We're working on the theory that she's a kid like James and Surma. We know she was at the court when James and Surma were young, and we know she did not take classes at the court. Why would she BE at the court if she's not a student at the court? If you're studying at the court, you stay at the court... if you're not a student, why stay here? If she was a kid like James and Surma... she would be attending classes somewhere, right? The only place nearby she could be taught is the forest. But, then she couldn't return to the court.

The Court is a massive industrial complex. There are many people who are there for reasons other than schooling. Perhaps her parents worked on some fancy science thing and Jones was home schooled.
And there's no reason to conclude that the Forest would be teaching anyone, as there is no evidence that suggest the Forest has ever taught any young students. In fact, evidence suggests the exact opposite, as tensions and animosity between groups rarely lead to magnanimous offers to help educate each other's youth.

Home schooling could be a possibility. Do you believe this is what happened? The forest isn't a possibility... that's what I said. Jones could not have been a student there. No point even arguing about that.

Jones (according to Tom in the Wikia): - Older than she appears - Has spent less of her life at Gunnerkrigg Court than the Headmaster
The former is implied by the conversation she had with the headmaster during Coyote's visit. The latter is very interesting, since it can be taken in any number of ways. Does Tom mean a greater percentage of his life? That would make sense if Jones has been around forever and her time at the Court is relatively brief. It also jives if you apply absolute figures to their stay, since her stay is at least as long as the difference from Ties to the present. That would be ~20 years, depending on what age Eglamore/Anja/Donald were during Ties. We already know they're in the mid 30s now from Tom's comments on them.
My guess? Her time at the court is between 20-49 years (50 is my guess at the Headmaster's age assuming he spent his whole life at the Court). This would fit both of Tom's statements. She'd be older than she appears, and yet she'd have spent less of her life at the court than the headmaster.
