I think we're all missing the important revelation that etheric Annie has grown two more heads! Who taught her this ability, and when?

I always assumed that the gear on that cover picture represented the dead Tictoc on the Forest shore. Maybe but it here it appears up on the Court side, not down in the gorge. I think there the gears represent the Court's obsession with science and technology. For a start it's up above the gorge so it's not the TicToc. In the Coyote Stories title page the gear is opposite the symbol for Jeanne, exactly where the Annie found the TicToc, so I think it's safe enough to assume the title page gear represents the dead TicToc. While I was rereading the comic I did notice how similar Antimony's pose while napping was to how Jeanne's bones are positioned. Think that might have confused Jeanne so she didn't attack until Antimony started moving? Oo, I like that idea, they are positioned very similarly. But then, wouldn't most people sleeping propped up against a wall position themselves like that? Maybe Jeanne died in her sleep, hands on her sword, ready to attack if need be.

That's another thought - if she died in her sleep, she might not even realize she's dead. She's like Martin, the kid who died in the fire, but didn't realize he'd passed. Except I think she might also be a bit confused by Diego's tech-spell in the arrow, binding her to this place.

But then, wouldn't most people sleeping propped up against a wall position themselves like that? Maybe Jeanne died in her sleep, hands on her sword, ready to attack if need be. Back before I became middle-aged I used to do a lot of hiking and camping. When there was no place to rest except where there were a lot of roots and/or rocks the only tolerable way I ever found to sleep was on my side. You have to sorta rest your head on a bigger one (hopefully with a pad or something between you and it) and then fit your hips and shoulders to lower areas. Be prepared to wake up many times during the night to try to reposition yourself. If you're so exhausted that you do pass out for more than an hour or two slumped as pictured then your limbs will be asleep and you will have trouble moving until you shake the kinks out. Also if you have a long weapon you're going to want it on the ground near your dexter hand even if you're lying flat so that if you need it fast it won't get tangled in loose-fitting clothes or blanket. Going to sleep with your finger on a trigger (or in this case, grabbing onto a sword blade with both hands) is a good way to have a serious accident if something startles you. That's why I'm inclined to think Jeanne's body has been posed after death. If only her hands were folded that'd be a perfect mortuary position. On the other hand Tom may disagree or not go camping. You may be right in that we should interpret what we're seeing as Jeanne slumped as she nodded off watching for whatever. I have seen people nod off in that pose propped up against walls and stuff, and holding the sword like that is aesthetically pleasing in an artistic sense. That's another thought - if she died in her sleep, she might not even realize she's dead. She's like Martin, the kid who died in the fire, but didn't realize he'd passed. Except I think she might also be a bit confused by Diego's tech-spell in the arrow, binding her to this place. I think her appearance whithering is a sign that she's losing self-image (forgetting what she used to look like). I'll infer from that that even if Jeanne did know at some point that she died she's probably lost much understanding of her circumstances just from the isolation and passing of centuries. If Diego's arrow did something too that'd make it even worse.

Why the flow of air? The Japanese signal arrows were also to serve as a ward against evil spirits. We know the barrier here is permanent, we don't hear the arrow when it's travelling through air and we've seen it depicted in the middle of the river (which would be able to 'fuel' the arrow forever). I dunno if that could be the case because the arrow might tend to land point-down, so I would think Diego would've chosen another delivery system... but the idea of flow-noise powering an underwater perpetually-screaming arrow is pretty awesome. If it isn't used in GC then someone should steal the idea and use it somewhere for something. Kudos, Rafita!

Okay, 9 hours until the next comic. Sadly I leave to a place without internet before that. But I want to keep my new idea:
Only 9 hours until the next comic! Where is the arrow? Will we meet the ghost of Jeanne? And why is Jeanne lying there so peacefully? Hopefully we get the answers on these questions and much more in the next GC-comic! Don't miss it (like I have to...)

I'm also vaguely curious about who it was that disagreed with the 'abhorrent plan' of theirs. I'm sure whoever it was will feature in the story at some point.

I'm curious to know what happens if Antimony touches the arrow when in etheric form, should she be unwise enough to do so. I'm also vaguely curious about who it was that disagreed with the 'abhorrent plan' of theirs. I'm sure whoever it was will feature in the story at some point. Oh yeah, guys like that tend to leave journals and other clues hidden for posterity.

I've just had an odd thought....let me try to frame it right here.
That sword is quite significant to Jeanne. It's turned up in her portrait in her hands. It's turned up in the hands of her ghost. And now it's in the hands of her dead body, fully gripped around the blade.
Three things are obvious: She highly valued it personally, to the point that it may have been a form of protection for her (from the unease shown in her portrait), she valued it such that she held onto it when she died, and it continued on in the hands of her ghost.
For some reason, not one person here has taken note of the fact that somehow the sword has taken on an etheric form in the ghost's hands. Martin, and every other ghost we've seen, and as far as we can tell with people who've passed on that we've seen, they don't seem to carry any physical artifacts with them. And yet Jeanne's ghost has that sword.
What if this weapon were somehow etherically charged, and perhaps had a special ability only Jeanne could unlock? This gives the binding of the arrow a completely new mechanism from which to work, and a specific reason why they chose her (besides Diego's murderous intentions). If she was etherically gifted in some way , and was linked to that sword...wherever the sword lay, it would keep her pinned down psychically.
The arrow would still be the prime mechanism to power the waters, and to bind Jeanne's ghost to those waters, but at least this might suggest why Jeanne was the one they had to do this to. I mean, think about it - there had to be a specific reason why she was picked. If all you had to do was bind any guy's spirit to the waters with an etherically charged arrow....there wouldn't be any reason to pick a specific person. They could just have taken an enemy they really hated (perhaps that traitor), and do it with them.
Instead, they chose her. I don't think we're working with the whole story here (of course not!), but I find it interesting now, that nobody's gone further to ask "Why Jeanne?" besides that Diego was pissed at her for choosing this "traitor" over him.
So I was just noting the sword was significant enough to be a possible reason why.
