I checked Tom's most recent answers about "Gunnerkrigg Court" at formspring, and discovered that he'd originally planned the comic to be seven books, one for each school year - but that he's changed his mind since then.
I wondered, after reading that, what led him to do so. Have his plans changed, perhaps, so that Annie might leave the Court before the final year? Of course, the second book, "Research", doesn't end with the end of Annie's second year; the chapters that would make up Book Three (Chapters Twenty-three to Twenty-eight, and maybe beyond - we don't know whether the current chapter will end with another thesis page or not yet) would thus be in the second year as well. Or maybe he just changed his plans because "Harry Potter" used the same format. (For that matter, Tea's chart at the end of the first chapter shows that Gunnerkrigg only has six school years, not seven.)

I think it will be as long as it has to be to tell the story. If it takes seven books, it takes seven books. If it takes 6 books, it takes 6 books...

I just figure he realized he had a lot more he could do with this story, so he expanded on it, and continues to do so. *shrugs*

(For that matter, Tea's chart at the end of the first chapter shows that Gunnerkrigg only has six school years, not seven.) "Sixth form" is a two year period covering what would be years 12 and 13, so it is seven years in total.

I think we've yet to hit year two... which is fine by me, really. The quality of the work being what it is, the longer it lasts, the better.

Annie started school about halfway through the school year, so Orientation covered the second half of Year 7. Research covered about the first half of Year 8, and we're currently in the second half of year 8.
Tom said elsewhere that he was planning for GC to take a few real life years, but he didn't want it to be his life's work. Given how long the first two books have taken, I can see why Tom no longer wants to do seven books for seven school years.

Indeed. Both books have covered half a year. Right now, we're maybe half way through what will be the third book, maybe almost at the end. It's hard to tell since the number of chapters per book is fluid.
So five years to make two and a half/three books. If all seven years were made, that would be 14 books, and at the current rate that would take 28/23 years. (23/18 more years from now.)
When I think about what this math implies for how long it will be until we see Anthony and Antimony meeting, it makes me slightly sad. But thinking that there will be more gunnerkrigg for all that time makes me very happy.
