700th strip! For some reason, Jack looks like a superhero comic antihero.

Jack may be mad, but damn it, he's going to look for what made him mad. And then he will close his fingers around its neck and squeeze and count six minutes...ehehehehehee...

Okay I feel better now. This page made Jack seem a lot more desperate at less maniacal. (However I still don't trust him...)

comic books antiheroes are the best kind of antiheroes!!
yay! go dark-reflections-of-the-choices-and-regrets-of-the-main-story-protagonist!! go charistmatic-character-that-through-tragedy-ends-up-being-the-most-dangerous-villain!!
But then again, maybe not. And therein lies the FUN!!

I like the way Jack thinks for a moment before answering her (panel 2).
I wonder why he can't find Zimmy? It usually isn't that difficult to find another student in a school, even one who doesn't need to sleep and has night and day inverted.

Interesting.
I really like the more grown-up way in which Annie is drawn. She looks so much more mature now.

Also, I suspect this isn't the first time that someone's been drawn into Zimmy's world, become marked by it, and tried to hunt her down. She's probably gotten pretty good at avoiding such people. Plus, remember how Annie reacted when Jack tried to ask her where Zimmy was? It's probably been the same whenever he's asked anyone else (minus the big wolf, of course) - he can't hide his desperation, it comes off as creepy, and they flee/hide/fight.

Zimmy probably has ways of keeping herself away from the rest of the Court and its students (apart from Gamma), except for those rare occasions when she needs Annie to relieve Gamma of her burden. Though we don't as yet know what those ways are. (Maybe she's somehow aware that she and Gamma were originally designed independently of "Gunnerkrigg Court" and are thus not fully part of it, and that helps her elude everyone else more firmly grounded in the Court's continuum.)

Wow, good job spotting that. That's very close, and not behind glass like the other shadows. If that is everyone's favourite panda bear, either something was preventing him from calling out to them, or something was preventing Zimmy and Annie from hearing him. If so, that something will probably turn out to have eight legs.

Oh man, I didn't even see that. That's very creepy. Personally I think they're all Jack, that he kept being transported to where Zimmy was if she got too far away.

The trails...
All this time, I was telling myself that Jack was just falling apart psychologically, not sleeping nights, whatever. But today's strip, you can see it: He's getting crumbly eyes.
Considering the special nature of the court, you'd think that someone besides the students would be paying more attention to this sort of thing.

Very frightening. I like this page because it show a less manic, more human - desperate even - side of Jack and it really helps me at least appreciate what he's going through and how he's trying to fix it. Also: They are everywhere! xkcd.com/427/

I really liked this page, since it grounded Jack as a person instead of just a "figure."

Could be any of them, sure, but they all seem like background figures. I actually thought (and kinda still think), that Jack might have been false Kat. I'm not sure exactly how that would work, but then I don't really understand Zimmy's world and I don't understand the false Kat situation to begin with.

Woooo, 700th page!
Is it flashback time minus one page?

Could have been, but someone asked that of Tom once and he said "No."

I personally think he was the one right under a spider and then you see him being attacked by it. It would explain etheric face spider quite nicely.

This chapter raises the question again why Gamma said there was noone else besides Antimony. Unless Jack was too far away to be sensed at the time or so.
Also: Where's Rey in this page?

Love the facial expressions here. Annie seems very mature, especially in panel 1, and Jack is spot on too.
Reynaerde, I assume Rey is in wolf form behind Annie and Tom didn't include him because he is not part of this conversation and it would just clutter things up.

Jack does not mention Kat, which means that while in Zimmsville
a: he only saw Annie and Zimmy before they were joined by PseudoKat or b: he was somehow unable to observe PseudoKat or c: he saw PseudoKat being gopped out of existence.

I actually thought (and kinda still think), that Jack might have been false Kat. I would rate that as "extremely improbable". 1) Gamma, when she woke up, said that she, Zimmy, and Annie were the only ones there. So either Jack was already gone, or Gamma was wrong. But false-Kat was right there in the room, not fifteen feet away from Gamma. Little chance of being overlooked. 2) Very shortly after that, false-Kat got gopped. (However, please note that I didn't say "not possible".)

Somewhere Tom also said it's not like Gamma's perception was an exact science. Or to that effect. I'm looking for a panel in Monday's comic that I can caption with lines in "Row, Row, Row" from Ziegfield Follies. You know, "Young Jack Hyland he had a cute little boat..." Since the melody has been running through my head since "You can't be serious" EDIT: Even better, maybe wombat will make another music video.

You know, I think my sympathy for Jack might have about doubled from this page.

I can't help thinking that the drawback of not having Zimmy along (even if Jack can't find her) is that it means he'll only have half the equation. He might get some answers by studying the power station and getting some idea of what the Court was doing, and what its goal was, but without any more information on Zimmy and her world, it won't be enough to solve the problem. And Zimmy might be even more crucial to the solution than the power station (which was just the catalyst).

Didn't notice until reading this thread that Annie had the beginnings of Zimmy eyes after that episode too. (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=470) Why did she get better but Jack got worse? Could it be the advice Zimmy gives Annie? "It's only as real as you let it be?" But in the next page she just tells Jack, "Sucks to be you."

The chapter would take a pretty unexpected turn if Annie now said the trip to Zimmingham can be sufficiently explained as all Zimmy and there's no reason to believe the power station has anything to do with it directly, and Jack was to go "oh ok" and they don't go to the power station after all but grab a cup of coffee and then Jack goes "and by the way the chapter is named as it is because I'm a parkour hero" and Annie is all "I'm not sure I like coffee".

But in the next page she just tells Jack, "Sucks to be you." A good question. Zimmy might just simply be less sympathetic to Jack, since she barely knows him. Very likely, though, she could see that spider on his face or at least sense it, and she knows what that means.

Thats what I was wondering. Gamma did say she is pretty sure no one but Carver was there. But Jack was there and Jack saw them. Was Gamma just wrong? Or is there something special about Jack that made it hard to sense him? Or was Jack with something that made it hard to sense him? Cause when Annie was there she had Zimmy with her, and Zimmy was explaining things to her. Maybe Jack met up with something else that explained things differently. Also as menschenjaeger pointed out his eyes look as though they are getting crumbly. Maybe hes becoming a nobody. And maybe thats why Gamma couldn't sense him? Edit: Grammer
