Yeah, should have read the thread again.
Still, I have a feeling that Jack's pretty much screwed...

Didn't notice until reading this thread that Annie had the beginnings of Zimmy eyes after that episode too. (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=470) Why did she get better but Jack got worse? Could it be the advice Zimmy gives Annie? "It's only as real as you let it be?" But in the next page she just tells Jack, "Sucks to be you." Actually, Tom has said in several places that that is just a visual representation of Annie being tired. It can also be seen after her episode in the ravine, as shown here. I know this because I was the one who asked him originally. I'd had a theory that the dark circles indicated an encounter with something negative in the etherium, and Tom responded that no, she was just tired. In both the ravine incident and the power station incident.

My take on that night has been that that they hit something like a "glitch in the matrix" or rip in reality, where they were sent to an etheric realm where demons are. I think Zimmy came from there and had met Gamma and befriended her, which then gave Zimmy a way out of that realm. However their link to that realm kept pulling them back until they were protected by the court.
It struck me as being sort of similar the dungeon dimensions from the discworld series, a bleak world where there are demons who want to escape to our world, but cannot survive cold harsh reality without something else to anchor to. Its a realm with a wide variety of demons ranging from shapeless thoughts to dark nightmares. Its "only as real as you let it be" because thoughts can shape reality there - a demon appeared in Kats form because Carver wanted to find her. If Zimmy is native to that realm it explain why gamma is telepathic, weird eyes, steam rising when rain falls on her, and Rey calling her a demon. Zimmy can survive in this realm because she has Gamma.
Jack got a spider demon stuck on him. If Annie hadn't met Gamma I'm sure she would have been possessed as well. Jacks demon is like a leech, leaving him tired all the time, but that world was his first glimpse into the etheric and he had no-one to hold his hand. Sucks to be you, indeed! But he's been trying to learn about it - as seen with Annie's blinker stone and now going back his first encounter. Maybe the spider wants to get back to his realm and Jacks picking that those thoughts up. Can't wait to see inside the place, or what will happen if they get sucked back there

Just tracking Jack's decline: Huh. When I look at them all together, I can see that it's not just his eyes that are getting worse. His hair is getting messier and messier as he gets worse, too.

I don't think that those are "Zimmy eyes". They're just regular worn-out eyes. Zimmy's eyes are hollows where the eyes should be - an etheric phenomenon rather than just ordinary exhaustion.

I'm REALLY impressed with Jack's resourcefulness. Backpack, boat, companion, all while being chased by (and successfully avoiding) Security and possibly? with no sleep.

When Zimmy got rinsed off in the rain, her regular eyes appeared through the black mess. They're in there, they just get . . . obscured.

This page is nice. It gives me hope that Jack is not as far gone as I feared in prior chapters.

I thought Tom said Zimmy's eyes were also just a visual metaphor.
Jack's energy seemed to repel against Annie's hair when she took her blinker stone back from him. Maybe there's something about him that's slightly anti-ether (and thus makes him harder for Gamma to sense)?

At first I did kinda think Jack's eyes were just shadowed from lack of sleep, but with th page I'm wondering if that might not be the case. Perhaps "zimmingham" is a state of mind that somehow infects you like a virus, and Jacks just the latest victim? And crusty eyes are just a symptom of seeing that place? (on a side note, zimmy's eyes always remind me of that crusty stuff you have in your eyes after you wake up... Excet that she has far too much of it almost ALL THE TIME *shudder*)

I wonder if he's been trapped by a spider in the same sense as an insect in a web, and thus it's draining his life out, and therefore he's harder to sense when life is the signal and now he's growing desperate.

I like the way Jack thinks for a moment before answering her (panel 2). There's something about him...It's almost as if he's disappointed n Annie for having to ask why he insisted she come along. Which is pretty understandable...he's been living with whatever-it-is for days, for him it's obvious. And now he's pinned his hopes on this girl, and she doesn't immediately get it.
