Oh Ysengrin... what did you do to yourself? I feel like it is unjust, if Coyote is showing Annie this only for sport. For a powerful spirit like him to be so reduced... it makes me sad.

We've known this for a while now. It was in one of the Questions to Tom threads where someone asked if Ys only had a wolf head or if he was a full wolf encased in a tree body.
You almost feel sorry for the guy, standing there all wobbly and whatnot. Then you remember he'd kill you if he had the choice. And you still feel a little sorry.

Such a strong image. It makes me kind of sad. But it answers my question on where the tremor comes from.

So his tremor is his own, and not just because of lack of control over his treebody. Age? Illness? Curse?

Oh, dear. He doesn't look well, does he? I wonder if his condition is because of the tree body or rather the tree body is because of his condition. Maybe he's just getting old.

I wonder why Coyote is showing Annie this... Awwww...look at this wobbly and weak body...at makes me want to run over to him and wrap him in a blanket D= Coyote is most likely immortal and Renard can be considered immortal as well as long as he has a body to possess...so old age might not be a problem for him either...but I don't think that it has ever been stated that Ysengrin had any sort of powers other than talking. Maybe he needs the tree body to actually move around properly?

Coyote loves him... Maybe he was really injured when the land was split in two, and Coyote granted him this body so he can still feel alive and move. Although, much like the shadow men with glass eyes; or Rey's inability to posses without killing the creature; it didn't quite turn out the right way.

Holy crap, Ys.
@mezz: either it's been rooted to the ground so it doesn't fall over while he's outside it or he gets around on millions of tentacle-esque roots.

We have no idea why he asked to be a mad skillful gardening, tree-commander, do we? I hope we're about to find out. At least the wolf-body hasn't atrophied away, it evidently gets an outing once in a while!

He was called 'general' somewhere in the Fangs of Summertime. He probably needs his tree shape to properly command his troops. Makes me wonder if we're going to see a march of the Ents - Gunnerkrigg style.

Oh, dear. He doesn't look well, does he? I wonder if his condition is because of the tree body or rather the tree body is because of his condition. Maybe he's just getting old. I think it's because of the tree body - Coyote's gifts coming with their unwanted side effects. I'm not certain that Ysengrin gets old in the same way that regular wolves (or humans, for that matter) do. He's a talking animal who must have been around for centuries, since he appears in the medieval Roman de Renard (as does Renard the Fox himself), and so he's probably immortal like the other etheric beings.

Like a few other people mentioned, I wondered if Ysengrin needed or wanted the tree exosuit. Then I noticed something.
The 'arms' of the suit are attached to the ground when he's not in it. Drawing food from the soil like a normal tree, maybe?
Next thought: What does the tree draw strength from when it's not in the ground?
Maybe it's Ysengrin himself. It would explain the withered, used-up look to his original body.

I might add, as a footnote to the post above, that I probably think of Ysengrin and Renard as immortal (in the sense of living forever unless killed) because I want them to. They're not just a talking wolf and a fox, but also part of our cultural heritage through the beast-fable of the Roman de Renard; the Roman de Renard won't disappear if they die, but still, I think that the world would be poorer without their presence. Even the presence of a wolf who has an almost irrational-level hatred of humans.

I think this is probably one of the most powerful pages we've seen, made all the better for its lack of dialogue. Ysengrin is clearly a tragic figure, whether or not he's a protagonist. Anyway, a part of me presumes this is the result of the tree body, since I get the impression Coyote's gifts always have a severe price attached, which is fairly standard for trickster characters. (It doesn't even necessarily have to be intentional on Coyote's part.)

My interpretation is that the withered state of his real body is a result of being/using the tree-body, either as a side effect or as a direct result - atrophy.
And I find pretty poignant that his hatred for humankind is so big that he has come at such lengths, like overcoming his own natural form - and, in the process, becoming more human-like. A tragic character, indeed.

I wonder why Coyote is showing Annie this... I think that's because Coyote is a good teacher. If Annie is to be the mediator between both sides of the river she should know the whole story from both sides, and knowing Ysengrin's weaknesses is an important part of the story. And Coyote knows that Ysengrin would not allow her to see him that way, so they have to peek. Note that if I'm right, then the forest is more open with her than the court. Wich doesn't surprise me at all.

Yeah, it looks to me like muscle atrophy. He's using his tree-powers to do everything, after all - his legs aren't getting any use except when he gets out of his plantsuit to do things like this. And compressing all his fur in that way and not cleaning it can't be good for it either. In this case it looks like coyote's gift is destroying him by being /too/ useful. (There may be some kind of mystical component to it too, of course, but he can't be helping it by what he's doing to himself.)
God, I just want to pet the poor murderous bastard. It's nice to see him evoke an emotion other than fear or anger.
