Jones is not James' mom.Ha! Also, this is the first we've seen of the world outside Gunnerkrigg Court except for Gillittie Wood and Good Hope Hospital.

Are we to assume that his parents could have visited but did not, or that Jones was fibbing? Why are they even giving their son away? He doesn't seem upset about it, so I wonder what happened.
We do actually need more context to understand, but I don't expect that to get in the way of a good argument...let's see who gets castigated on minimal evidence first.

Well, there goes that theory... Are we to assume that his parents could have visited but did not, or that Jones was fibbing? Why are they even giving their son away? He doesn't seem upset about it, so I wonder what happened. Think "Hogwarts".

Literally! (well, almost) Come on, please let the next flashback answer the question of what Jones is and what she's doing with Eggers.

By this rate, we'll be at the creation of the Court before the end of the month. I always think "Hogwarts"!

Well we don't know that his parents DIDN'T visit him, unless there is a line in another comic somewhere that I have missed about it. I think it is as another commentor said, more like hogwarts where they recognised some kind of raw talent in him and removed him from the 'normal' world and into gunnerkreig in order to train him to use it. As to what Jones is, some sort of supernatural being who in service to the court I guess.

This comic reminds me of The Prisoner for some reason.

Centuries ago? Either something about the seed Bismuth, Jones' origin, or we cut back to the present.
We seem to be several decades ago rather then just a couple. I would estimate Jims is no more than 30 or 40, so this would have to be circa 60s or 70s, probably late 60's considering Jones' Kennedy-style pillbox hat and gloves.
Tom also mentions in the description that Mrs. Eglamore has tears in her eyes, implying they know this is going to be permanent.

Well, unfortunately Tom seems to slow down around Eggy. This can hardly be perceived as a flashback flashing exponentially fast anymore. Well, we might still reach centuries ago, but first it will be a few decades, decades, several decades and many decades...

So many more years ago that the old narrator got tired of waiting and they had to hire a new one.

I was just scratching my head, wondering if it was worth asking about that on formspring... That top looks late Dior and with the white pillbox and matching gloves I'd guess it to be very late 1950's or early 1960's if this were America... the UK lagged a bit so maybe mid-to-late 1960's but Eggers should be in his late 30's... which I think means maybe Jones' outfit is somewhat out of date in this. [edit] Or maybe I should say it's very conservative in style. [/edit] However: Either way, that's before my time and not really my area of expertise, but this is the internet, so knowing what you're talking about isn't required.

I like the use of color on this page. It really feels like an older time. I say the next page will be "Centuries Ago" with a picture of Jones reading some scriptures foretelling the birth of That Guy Who Is Eglamore.

Maybe Jones just dresses conservatively. Lot's of mothers cry when they send their babies off to school for the first time, even though said babies are only going to be gone a few hours. Little Jimmy might be away for the whole term, and not come home until Christmas, or something.

Is it cradlerobbing if vampire ageing or some other kind of immortality is in effect, hey at least she waited till age of consent unlike a certain sparkly vampire.
At least I think she did the age of consent is 18 here in the States but 16 in Canada so I assume its the same for the UK then again i hear the drinking age is almost non-exsistant combared to the 21 of the states.

Of course, it's perfectly possible that his parents really did visit often.

Also, this is the first we've seen of the world outside Gunnerkrigg Court except for Gillittie Wood and Good Hope Hospital. Ha! You bring up a good point! Which brings up the question: where is Gunnerkrigg Court (in fictitious world of the story) and how do you get there? Maybe we'll find out in the next page(s). We seem to be several decades ago rather then just a couple. I would estimate Jims is no more than 30 or 40, so this would have to be circa 60s or 70s, probably late 60's considering Jones' Kennedy-style pillbox hat and gloves. I agree. By the looks of Jones's wardrobe, this must be in the 1960s. 1960s fashion for women.

[/edit] However: Either way, that's before my time and not really my area of expertise, but this is the internet, so knowing what you're talking about isn't required. I don't know. What I know he certainly is over 30. I think he must have been around 20 when he lost Surma to Carver. At least. Coyote's comments ( "Eglamore, you hound") make it seem that at the time that Surma tricked Renard to the court she was still more or less with James. It seems that she definitely an adult and maybe around 20's back then and some time passed from that to time when he hook up with Carver. Now, it might have still taken a few years before she got pregnant. And 9 months from that to Annie's birth. And Annie is, how old, 14? Do we know it? This suggest that James is not "late thirties maximum", but "late thirties minimum". The maximum age could be deduced from things around Antimony's childhood. it seems clear that neither Surma nor Tony had got very old by the time Antimony was born. It seems that Tony was a surgeon already then, or at minimum quite early after the birth, so I'd say 25 at least. But both seem quite young, definitely not much over 30 when Annie was some 5 years old, playing in the hospital. Thus, it is very likely that they were not over 30-year-old when they got Annie. So her parents were probably between 25-30 when she was born. So, if Jimmy is the same age with them, then the maximum would be around 45. How old is he on this page? 6? About that probably. As 45 year-old he would have born 1967, and it would be early 70's. AI don't know much of fashion, but to my mind Jones seems ridiculously 50's to 60's in her dress. Which means that she is either unfashionable (why would I not be shocked?) or Jimmy and others are more like 50-something. I guess the former is the case and Jimmy is in his early or mid 40's.

(yeah he's six, just lost his first tooth)
I just noticed: Eggy asks: "will I go to my new home NOW, miss Jones?" Seems to me this still isn't the first time Jones appeared in Eggy's life.

I do wonder why (with the exception of the first flashback, with the Headmaster) all the Jones flashbacks revolve around Eglamore. I hope we find out why before the end of the chapter (there has to be a lot more to her than her connection to him).

Yer a wizard Dragon Hunter, Eggy. So many more years ago that the old narrator got tired of waiting and they had to hire a new one. I laughed so hard the sprite I was drinking went through my nose...it hurt...
