Makes sense, in the chapter Kat tried makeup, Annie didn't seem to have a high opinion of the stuff in general. Wierd for someone who wears it almost 24/7

When did she last take it off? As far as I can recall, it was at the end of first year, after she'd said goodbye to Kat.

Que the mad rush to reexamine every page for makeup level and possible cross-relevance I found this page to be quite illustrative on the matter, since in no previous page she is wearing make up. Oh god, you're right... The change that occurred in the dream has had the effect of making her think twice about the mask. So what does that have to do with Tony? Nothing? Is the makeup his design, and that's why Surma wore it? Is it magical, metaphorical, or just poisonous? First Tony's sticking massive bones into his daughter's soul and now he's sneaking her emotion-suppressant drugs in her vanity items? I mean, if you'll stoop to lithium lipstick, where will you go next?

Took me a moment to realise what the objects in the 2nd panel were -- the eyeshadow looks like a lens. Also consider the first panel in #315 for the makeup-as-mask theme. I'll rise to PB-Prime's bait and speculate that we should have seen this coming, since she usually loses her makeup in times of great vulnerability and distress.

That reminds me of Black Swan were I thought that the lipstick was poisonned with some substance that caused craziness and hallucination, and it turned out that no.

Eh? Annie has been wearing makeup since the very start of the strip. Take a look at the previous pages in that chapter. No makeup. Ah, good pickup. Annie wipes off her makeup at the end of the previous chapter after Kat goes on holiday, it's still missing for the first couple of strips of the new chapter, but she's wearing it again by the time Kat gets back. It must do more than just be symbolic, though.

So Kat's hairband and Annie's makeup are both used for the girls to hide behind and need to be discarded so they can be more comfortable as themselves?
I never really though this chapter would turn out to be a psa not to accessorise.

Don't forget the make up-pink bows combo. [edit]Now that I think about it, her "can't do this stuff" may come out as "can't hide my true feelings behind a metaphorical mask of make up to raise my straightness level" under this chapter's context.[/edit]

Hmm, pretty sure we're getting very close to the end of this chapter, and still not much clue as to what was up with Zimmy and Annie's wound in the first page

Also, the red from Zimmy's hair is gone. Maybe it was representing her inner fear of being in a room with Kat? Who knows who knows... I'm more inclined to think that the red represented Zimmy's etheric connection with Annie. She even got the scar for a few panels! To me that signifies that Zimmy isn't capable of keeping her own etheral self separate from others, so they leak through or even take over, as we saw a few chapters back when she began to hallucinate that she was Annie. Also, no end of chapter today. Colour me surprised. I wonder what more there is to see, here... EDIT: And the roof is brown? The perspective in the last page really didn't give that impression...

Clearly evil Tony's bone projections have eroded Annie's determination to wear the protective makeup that shields her against his ethero-medicinal mind-leech soul-surgeons.

I found this page to be quite illustrative on the matter, since in no previous page she is wearing make up. Not true. Annie wears make-up from the start. She only takes it off at the very end of the first year, when she's waiting in the dorm for word from her Dad. Make-up as a mask clarifies Jones delivering makeup to Annie in the forest. A mask to present to the forest. That Jones was not wearing anything suggests she doesn't need a mask: her naturally lively and vivacious personality is all she needs to present. ;D

Annie only wears make-up when there are other people around, emphasis on people; she didn't wear it when she came out of the Forest. Interesting enough, considering that it seems that Jones did bring her that mask in the dream; perhaps make-up is only the physical representation of the psychological distance in the Court, and what Jones actually brought was advice to stay impartial and not go native? I still wonder what Jones's nudity was meant to symbolize. Perhaps that she views her own body in so utilitarian manner that clothing is just necessary social decor for her, rather than any kind of part of her self-image? Who knows, maybe she only bothers wearing clothes when there are humans around to get offended by nudity? That would be yet another thing about her that makes me think of Motoko Kusanagi from Mamoru Oshii's film. Say, just because Jones isn't a robot doesn't mean she can't be a cyborg...

She is wearing it when she came out of the forest. Check out the beginning of 'from the forest she came'. Tom even said on formspring that Jones had bought her some to the forest when asked how she was still wearing it.

I wonder if there's any bigger mystery behind the make-up, or if it's just something Annie picked up from her mom.
Surma wore it since she was a kid and Tom said she put it on in the hospital whenever people came to visit. After Surma died Annie started wearing the exact same make-up, but only when there are people around. She also ditched her shoes when there were no other people around. The obvious reason seems to be a mask around other people, to keep everyone at arms length from seeing her real face. But Surma was equally fixated on the stuff since she was young, it doesn't seem quite normal.
The real reason Annie wears it? To keep from looking like Tony 2.0

So it wasn't a dream, or part of it was. The make up is the mask and the mask is Annie's stoic moments. As a side note I read this page right to left by habit and sat for five minutes feeling confused before I remembered that this isn't manga. Zimmy is quite upset, poor girl.

Ah, so the makeup and her mask are one and the same. My thoughts — for what they’re worth (not much!) — are that Annie’s hesitation toward applying the makeup might show that whatever Anthony was doing might have worked to some extent. Her makeup has to me seemed symbolic of her mother’s continuation within her. Her refusal could indicate a weakening of those ties. It doesn’t seem necessarily relevant, but Annie not wearing the makeup is also possibly (?) appropriate vis-à-vis Kat’s struggle to come to terms with her own femininity. (And I do think it’s an issue of femininity rather than sexual orientation per se. Or maybe I’m just creeped out by the shipping of two tween girls. )
