zuhwuhhhhAlso, I'll point out some people suspected Jones of being a golem.

LAUGHING ON LINE, we posted almost the exact same title, and I wanted to be the first to post.
Anyways, them being golems makes some sense here, especially the whole frankenstein deal (who in DnD would be a flesh golem). I'm pretty sure modern robots aren't golems, but clearly some part of the origional golem was passed on.
Also, I'd like to note that those carvings look alot like heiroglyphics to me, there are also repeating elements, words.
Edit: I think Annies knowledge of mythology and things etheric (not to mention an interest in technology, she does seem really interested in Kats project) and Kats engineering knowledge are going to come into play here. The whole golem thing could be part of what Coyote referred to as man trying to be god.
Edit2: Hey, the bit that looks like an ear and a person peeking out of a doorway is the same as the chapter thumbnail icon!
Edit3: As people have observed earlier, it does look like there is an arabic script influence along with a bit of egyptian, but I'm pretty sure it's something entirely of Toms own invention.

It feels like Annie and Kat's comments in the fifth panel can be seen as a summary of the comic's science vs magic theme.
Also I want an optivisor.

Quick somebody find Jones' heart! I think Eglamore has it Also, in the last panel one of the Golems has "Truth" written on its forehead in Hebrew. The Golem of Prague is a Jewish legend.

Just so you guys know, at the last picture where you see the robots with the red glowing eyes, the tall one with the marking on his forehead means "truth" in Hebrew = אמת see the similarities ?
Also, there is nothing really Arabic or Egyptian about the writing on the heart, its just a sort of a decorative style tom probably decided fits the theme.
The truth part is the only strange bit here..

Hm... But why and how golems have the plug for the computer processor and for the memory chip?
Very interesting page...
P.S.: Maybe Jones is golem with someone soul(human's or someone else)?

Its there because those are Golems. What do you mean ? Hebrew writing on golems forehead is depicted in other old drawings, I guess because its a Jewish creation, but I was wondering mainly about tom picking the word "truth" to place there. Also, sup jayne.

A combination of science and etherics? I've been wondering about specifically that possibility ever since: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=420Having been shown Kat's parent's dual-paradigm computer a while ago, and having seen a line-up of Diego's robots before, including dismantling at least one to find there were no obviously functioning systems, it seems a little late to be coming to this conclusion.

But wait then how come none of them work until bullbot vs. angelbot goes into play? Are all those instructions really there just saying "applaud when bullbot dies"?
Also I guess now we know what that extra blue bit was on the Court robots' microprocessors.

Also, sup jayne. Annie is recalling golems she has read about, and she must have read about the word "truth" being written on their foreheads. So...by placing Robot's CPU in the SI robot body, it was activated, assuming there is a hard coded series of letters on robot's CPU.

Hm... But why and how golems have the plug for the computer processor and for the memory chip? Basically, Diego cheated. The robots are a hybrid of etheric technology and just enough court technology to allow it to work. Edit2: Hey, the bit that looks like an ear and a person peeking out of a doorway is the same as the chapter thumbnail icon! Good eye!

Also I guess now we know what that extra blue bit was on the Court robots' microprocessors. That would mean all the basement robots were on standby all those years... CPU in place, waiting to perform their set of instructions: "Applaud when bullbot dies" I suppose Bullbot's instructions were "perform attack sequence when the phrase "She died and we did nothing" is spoken. And they have no further instructions (as far as we know.) Man, Diego was very wasteful.

Basement Bots had no CPUs in place. I presume the 'watch and clap' is a default behavior when in no processor in place to handle higher functions.

Because in the classic legend Golem had the word emet written on its forehead, I guess.

I'm not very knowledgeable regarding hardware... could their instructions be hardcoded on their "motherboard" Well I'm assuming in this case the ceramic heart dealy is their motherboard, so all that writing is just 'clap politely at this point.' It just seems sort of odd.

It just seems sort of odd. I thought some of the writing is the spell that activates the golem, and just a small part of it is the instructions for what to do. In the classic story, they cast a spell on the golem and wrote the instruction on their forehead. Maybe Diego automated the spell casting by including it on the robot/golem.

I didn't really mean it as a metaphor. I meant whatever part of the golem that does what a motherboard does. Some bit of hard-coded memory... All the robots, including those not made by Diego, have instructions to react to the name Jeanne. The modern robots copied what they could from Diego's robots to create new robots, so there must be some part on the old models that is still on the new models, even if the modern robots wouldn't know what that part did.

I have to wonder if Tom knows tomorrow is Lag-Baomer (Dedication of the Zohar, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's masterpiece of Kabbalah)? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zohar

So... Annie explains the thing we'd already pretty much figured out (the power source is etheric). You'd think Kat would have thought of that possibility already.
I kinda feel like we just saw the "Batman effect" in action. Batman is supposed to be smart and deductive. But other superheros are actually probably pretty smart too. So when you team Batman up with other superheros and they come across some complex thought problem that must be solved, Batman always figures it out because he's supposed to be the guy that's good at that... even though the problem probably wasn't that complicated and anyone else in the team probably could have figured it out. So rather than Batman looking smart, everybody else just looks dumb.
Well, either that or Kat though about it but didn't want to believe it. Which is silly in it's own right: a power source is a power source. Pretty sure actual real-life engineers and inventors would use the crap out of a new crazy power source even if scientists didn't understand it yet. Heck, history is full of examples of inventions using phenomenon that science has no understanding of.
I'll be interested to see what Kat's actual reaction in the next page is. If it's anything besides "oh, alright" she's going to feel a bit silly to me.

OGEE!! If the writing on the heart has the activation spell/code on it, then just putting it back in place may be enough to get it going again!

If it's anything besides "oh, alright" she's going to feel a bit silly to me. The two main problems with any story containing a super genius is 1) the author is usually not a super genius, and 2) the audience is usually not composed of super geniuses. So, they have to make Batman look good but in some way the audience can understand. Not an easy situation! And I think Kat's reaction should be something like "You mean like what Rey was saying when we first found them?"

I think it's more complicated than that - Kat was probably expecting to find some kind of novel, possibly etheric power source she'd never seen before. Instead, she found a lump of ceramic capable of making the metal alive!

Yeah, I think she'd be better if it was like her mother's computer or the power station... some kind of machine that works with the ether. Of course, at the heart of both of those things, there is probably something akin to this heart... mostly mystical.
