Yes! I was secretly afraid of "meanwhile, somewhere completely else" chapter to prolong the cliffhanger ;-)

*groan* And here I was thinking we'd get a break from Jack. I guess I'll come back in nine weeks or so.

Jack has your twelve essential vitamins and minerals rolled up into one crazy package, how could you not love 'im? Alternatively: Spring Heeled 2: Etheric Boogaloo. Spring Heeled 2: The Springening? Spring Heeled 2: The Court Strikes Back

Jack has your twelve essential vitamins and minerals rolled up into one crazy package, how could you not love 'im? I just don't find him likeable or interesting. He's the first character in Gunnerkrigg who I don't personally like and I resent that he's sidelining other, better characters. In Springheeled Part 1, Annie's dialogue consisted of 287 words. Jack got 525. I really, really don't want Gunnerkrigg to turn into the Jack Show. It's something I call Wolverine Syndrome.

Good point. Oh well. A girl can dream. Unless she's Zimmy.
Spring Heeled 2: The Return of Spring Wait, that's not right. As long as it isn't Spring Fever.

Wow, you counted words...
But I think you'd probably find similar results if you counted Coyote's words in "the Old dog's tricks", or Anja's words in "Blinking", or Jones words in "the Medium Beginning", or Red's words in "Red returns".
Different chapters focus on different secondary characters. This just happens to be Jack's turn now.

Spring Heeled 2: Haha Just Kidding, It's Actually City Face
...that said, Jack needs some character/back-story development badly, like RIGHT NOW. Hopefully we will see that in this chapter.

Don't be a Menace in South Central while you're Springing your Heels in the Hood
OK, NOW I'm done.
By the way, I'm really getting the feeling that Zimmy's about to enter the picture. The picture really makes me think of the flashbacks to Birmingham we've seen in Zimmy's memories.

Yeah, I keep track of the word count of all the characters. And while that is for all those chapters, the difference is that I actually like the characters they were about. Maybe I should explain my feelings in a bit more depth. I don't actually hate Jack. What I feel for him as a character is really just cold indifference. I hate what he represents, and I'm not just talking about Wolverine Syndrome. I started reading GC pretty early on, and I was immediately enchanted. Every character immediately wormed their way into my heart. Every chapter was a beautifully told, enthralling story. I'm a pretty critical guy generally, but here was something I COULD NOT CRITICISE. There was literally nothing wrong with Gunnerkrigg Court. And then Power Station started. Along comes a character that I don't actually dislike, but he certainly doesn't do anything for me. I was easily able to overlook him because Power Station was one of the best chapters since the comic began. And then he showed up again in Terror Castle of the Jupiter Moon Martians. This time, he was a lot more in your face, a lot more obnoxious. I was having a much harder time ignoring him this time around. And since he was the last thing in the chapter, it meant that one of the most interesting chapters ended on a low note. Again, I did not hate Jack. But here was the first character since GC inception that I did not actually like. He broke the enchantment. Turns out Tom Siddel's human after all. Since Jack first appeared on the stage, I have never been able to recapture the magic of earlier. And then Residential. Total dud of a chapter. The first of its kind. I'm not saying this was entirely Jack's fault, but since he featured prominently, he became linked in my mind with degradation of quality. Now Spring Heeled comes along. A chapter which is all about Jack in which Annie and co. are only there so Jack has someone to be crazy at. He just keeps being shoved in my face. I realize that Jack is extremely popular, and that Tom doesn't give a crap what any of us think, but I still feel like I'm having this character forced on me. It's not that he's a really bad character. He's just not as good as the rest of them.

I have a feeling some awesome stuff is going to go down in this chapter. What kind of talk is that? Jack has your twelve essential vitamins and minerals rolled up into one crazy package, how could you not love 'im? I just don't find him likeable or interesting. He's the first character in Gunnerkrigg who I don't personally like and I resent that he's sidelining other, better characters. In Springheeled Part 1, Annie's dialogue consisted of 287 words. Jack got 525. I really, really don't want Gunnerkrigg to turn into the Jack Show. It's something I call Wolverine Syndrome. I think comparing Jack to Wolverine is over-stating things. Wolverine is just inserted into stories he has no relevance to in order to steal the limelight, whereas the current story arc is about Jack. Tom couldn't omit him from this chapter without leaving the story hanging for a few weeks, and after the cliffhanger I'm sure no one wants that.

Okay, preus -- but that's really just a matter of personal reader taste. On my part, for example, it's Jones I really don't care much about. In your case, it's Jack. That's just an issue of preference.

That's just an issue of preference. I completely agree. I hope I didn't come off as trying to present my opinions as facts or anything. I was just stating how I feel. I was then asked why I felt that way, so I endeavoured to explain it. I'm sorry if I came on too forcefully. I wasn't trying to convince anyone of anything.

I fully expect Jack to be doing more jumping. Preferably in London to hark back to the original, but the streets of GC will do in a pinch.
