of course they're interested. After disposing of Paz's lifeless body, they now have the chocolate all to themselves. The last panel is their point of view, going "oh god finally, chocolate" You paint a grim picture! Chocolate theft is a serious crime! Let's hope Eglamore will be back soon, to smite the villain with righteous vengeance!

If Candle Jack says his own name, does he need to abduct himself?

This does raise the question again: the school sends the children to a camping area that its faculty knows is haunted by a dangerous ghost. Now, it starts out with a reasonable precaution - sending Eglamore with them to protect them from it. But then, when Eglamore is called back to the Court, he leaves them in the care of Marcia, who is clearly intimidated by the ghost, unable to deal with it, and even isolates Janet from the rest of the group, thus making her open to abduction, while knowing all the while of the danger out there. And now it seems that even the small clump of tents is unsafe.
Now the emergency back at the Court might have been too dangerous for Eglamore and Bob to take the children back with them, rescheduling the Residential for another week - but the defense of the young campers against the ghost still seems to have been poorly planned. Unless, as has been suggested here already, the whole thing is a practical joke. If it isn't, we may have to reassess the faculty's competence.

Incompetent faculty is a tradition at magical boarding schools, and besides, fighting evil improves the children's moral character.
Hell, we don't know what happened between the last and second-to-last panels. The ghost could have given Paz a quick maths test and only kidnapped her for doing badly. They'll be more motivated to work if they know they might need this information to stay alive.

Looks like someone else caught that big fish too, if you look in the first panels of that one and today's. Seems to be a popular subject!

But that's really one of the tropes that are significantly averted in Gunnerkrigg Court -- one of the excellent elements in this comic is that the older generation are NOT a bunch of incompetents: Anja, Donald, Eglamore, Jones, etc... they all seem supremely competent.
So, yeah, it does seem weird that they would let a bunch of kids in such obvious risk -- I think that's why most of us seem to doubt this "ghost" can pose an actual danger.
I have no idea where this plot is going.

I do think, though, that Jack isn't the ghost (as some have suggested) - unless he's been sneaking out to the camping area in the time between Chapter Nineteen and this chapter and wreaking enough havoc for the faculty to be aware of something going on there, but mistaking it for a ghost.

Well of course Paz got kidnapped. It's because she's so attractive!
To ghosts...

[/lurk] As I can't reconcile Janet's disappearance with everyone else's unconcern, I have come up with the following sinister theory: nobody remembers her. Her existence's been wiped from their minds by means of psychic ghost powers. And now they'll forget Paz, too. Er. Maybe this oughta go in Wild Spec. [lurk] Hey, I predicted that a few comics ago. Someone agrees with me! I feel so special. ;D So is the ghost grabbing anyone who goes out of sight, or just the girls? Jack was fine untroubled by supernatural phenomena ...well this ghost didn't get him at least. Given the etheric presence he projects, I wouldn't want to go near him if I was a ghost either.

That's not just any candy bar- it's a Wonka bar. Maybe the ghost/abductor is after a Golden Ticket.

If this was an animated series, this would be the Halloween episode. I like seeing Annie getting along with other people. Whose that she's talking to? Looks familiar, I'm sure I've seen him/her(?) in the background a few times.

I love seeing Annie being happy. And who is that kid she's talking too? Although, at the moment Annie's just listening. I wonder how much talking she's done. I like that Kat and Annie are not just sitting next to each other. Hanging out with the crowd would be meaningless if they just stayed off in their own corner. And I'll echo judgedeadd, what is with Kat's expression? It does not really seem appropriate for talking to someone who is worrying about his missing girlfriend.

Looks familiar, I'm sure I've seen him/her(?) in the background a few times. That's the girl who people thought was related to Winsbury. (Tom has established that she is not related to him.) We saw her in the chapter about the roof incident, and also earlier in this chapter.

Her existence's been wiped from their minds by means of psychic ghost powers. And now they'll forget Paz, too. That was in a Twilight Zone episode. Three astronauts kept vanishing after a space trip and nobody could remember them except the other astronauts. Eventually they all disappeared and nobody ever remembered them. TZ was such a cheery show. Oh no, Paz! You dropped your Milka bar while delivering some awesome kung-fu moves on the ghost which we won't see until Wednesday ;D

When I came up with it here I think I was partly remembering an episode from Star Trek The Next Generation, and partly remembering an episode of some Robin Hood TV series thing that I never heard of ever again. Both of which involved people disappearing and only one person remembering they'd ever existed.

Oh, I remembered what I was thinking of with the disappearance-and-forgetting. Otter Soldiers. Anyone read Otter Soldiers?
And does this mean all the students done got microchips in their heads?

I think that Tom's permitting the inconsistency here for the needs of the atmosphere - an upbeat scene about Annie finally socializing with the other students, which was what last Friday's page was leading up to. If everybody had been worrying about Janet, the scene wouldn't have worked.
(Maybe he should have had the students start disappearing *after* the sequence of events involving Jack, Annie's worries that her self-imposed isolation is forcing Kat to be alone, and deciding to join in at the campfire - but it's too late to change that now.)

It's actually a Traveller Guitar Pro Series! I consider myself corrected.. Of course, knowing that it's a guitar specially designed to be easier to transport in an unconventional manner makes it even niftier than a regular old Dulcimer. Also, if this keeps up, Paz is going to wind up snapping and I'm unsure if that will be Terrible or Awesome. Or Both. Also Also: I find it interesting that someone who has been troubled twice, and as far as we know, both times by spirits, has a name that means 'Peace'... At least, I'm fairly sure that's what the Latin root of her name means.

but why is no one worried about janet? They didn't saw her interaction with Mort, but they know her. And expect her to be terribly occupied by chasing the ghost throughout the park. Jack is going to end up the hero of this chapter. Just you watch. ...he'll creep the hell out of that ghost. Believe in him. Oho! Now that Janet is out of the picture, Kat is moving in on Sweet William. She really wastes no time! Ah, no. Look at her expression... what is with Kat's expression? It does not really seem appropriate for talking to someone who is worrying about his missing girlfriend. ...'cause she just said: " What? Do you mean you didn't turned the whole park inside out yet?!" Actually, I'd rather say they're not interestid in the choclate at all, considering they left it there on the ground. Well, here's two interpretations. Either "it" grabbed Paz and left the chocolate. Or "it" scared Paz away from the chocolate, in which case she's going to run through the kid's circle bolide-style, WAAAA-A-A-A-A!iling. And when they'll go here to investigate there will be no chocolate.

"Oh, hey, Kat! Hey Annie! How's it going? So nice of you to give us this fire, you know, thanks a ton! ... Oh, Joe, did I tell you about that trip my family and I took over the summer? ... I saved a few ... wait a minute, I think I have some now ... You guys have GOT to try this stuff, it's delicious! Let me go get some ... Let's see, which tent? This one, maybe? Yes! ... Now, where did I put that chocolate?... La-dee-dah-dee-dah.... Where is it?... ho hum... Aha! There it is! ... Man it's cold, I'd better get this back to the otheREEEEEEAAAAARRRRRRGGGHGHGHGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" ... ... "Oh man, why do those ghosts always pick on me?" "Oi, you think you've got it bad? I've, been in this stomach for, like, a day!" "..." Kidnappings aside: If Candle Jack says his own name, does he need to abduct himself? Um, who's Candle Jack?
