Following the intense discussions of the Tic-Tocs in this thread, and the desire of those who find Tic-Tocs intriguing, I started this thread as to not let any discussion of the Tic-Tocs sink when new threads come out. Anyways, dedicating a thread to Tic-Tocs should make it easier for everyone to find out where the Tic-Tocs discussion is.

Okay, a slight recap: (Click on the links for the detailed thoughts of people discussing about the Tic-Tocs) Who created the Tic-Tocs?What are Tic-Tocs?Why are the Tic-Tocs there?Ahaha, that's the best I can do for now. Forgive me if I overlooked any of your post.

That's a lot of links there!
Well to start things off with a bang, I'm going to start the "They're called Tic-Tocs" camp, and you hang on to the "They're called Tick-Tocks" camp, because if we're going to discuss them in depth, then we've got to be prepared for the really minute minutia!

Bah! Tried to put a poll, mistakenly pressed Enter, and only got 2 options there xP
I planned to put it like this: - Tick-Tocks - Tic-Tocs - Tic-Tocks - Tick-Tocs - A write-in vote! - I guess you guys spent waaay to much time on GC...
Anyone knows how to change a poll?

My beliefs: Tic-Tocs were invented a while back, by someone of the court, possibly Diego. They were forgotten, as evidenced by Anja's declaration that the Court doesn't know what they are, and in fact wants to capture them to study them.
I do believe that they have something to do with Anthony - I think it's likely that he's somehow been able to exert control over them. There's little evidence, but it's an interesting idea, narratively. At least until we know more about Anthony, or the birds.
They are etheric and technological, I'm sure. Their form and behavior is very different from the Court's robots (suggesting an etheric aspect), yet they clearly are constructed beings, wires and gears and all. I don't know what their purpose is, but I think Anthony is currently using them to observe the Court and Annie, and protect her when need be.
But, we'll see. And be surprised in the way that only Tom knows how to write.

They were forgotten, as evidenced by Anja's declaration that the Court doesn't know what they are, and in fact wants to capture them to study them. If they are from the court, then how come they got forgotten? I think it's most likely that they are planted there by parties outside of the Court -- not necessarily unrelated with the Court, just not officially part of. Hmmm... some thoughts occured to me: - If it's etheric, then the Woods people won't be angry - If it's technological, then how come it can grow to considerable size, damaging the cliff wall? Now, for somethings off-tangent: 1. What significance can we attach to the "BEEEEE!" sound in [118]? 2. Do you think the birds (or someone(s) remote-controlling them) know about the existence of the Jeanne spectre on the Court's side of Annan Waters? Which might explain why they dropped Annie on the Gillitie side. 3. If the birds are from the old days, why was Kat not aware of them? .

Aww, I was just about to suggest Tic-Tacs.
Edit for relevancy: I don't see why the Tic-Tocs growing is inconsistent with technology. Self-replicating machinery is hardly a novel concept. In fact, going out on a limb, I posit that the entire population of Tic-Tocs is a self-maintaining flock of self-growing von Neumann machines.

I've been thinking for a while that the tic-tocs may have been a species of bird that somehow got infected with a virus that turned their innards into machinery somehow. I know that sounds pretty stupid but I don't think someone has brought that possibility up yet. Maybe it had to do something with the bismuth seed affecting wild-life. Maybe one of the birds ate it!

From what I can tell of our friends the Tic-Tocs, they are likely not one of Diego's experiments, at least, not one of his standard ones. After all, when they found the robots, there were no Tic-Tocs there. If Kat looked at all the robots thoroughly enough to spot a boxbot, she'd have seen one of the birds there too, which trade their terrible-ness for a more enigmatic demeanor. When Annie opened the deceased one up ( Here), there was no CPU in sight, which is odd considering it would most likely be placed closest to the outside for easier removal, like Robot's was. (Although it may just be on the other side or something.) Either this is just having it in the wrong place, or that the robot is designed differently, which, in most senses, it seems to be. The build of it is not encased in metal, like all the others are, but some other, canvas-like material apparently, which I doubt Diego had the skills to manipulate in such a manner. And, in the previous page, you can see some sort of writing on the power supply. There is none of this on the mouse bot. Again, this indicates to another robot creator, perhaps an apprentice of Diego's? They are similar in complexity and parts used, given their differences. As for the Etheric/Technology debate? I can't really discern between the things, but maybe that writing indicates that it's an etheric battery? I can't really say. That's my two cents, as far as I'm concerned.

Jiminiminy: Ha, you noticed that writing, too? I've been trying to decipher what it could possibly be... but unfortunately the page's resolution not large enough for me to even start speculating what they are...

You should be able to edit the poll out of your own first post Pepo. I know I've done that before.

I've been trying to decipher what it could possibly be... but unfortunately the page's resolution not large enough for me to even start speculating what they are... That little writing still bugs me. Anytime the resolution is good enough to read it, it's too small to be useful, anytime it's big enough to see, it's just blurred or pixelated. I wonder if Tom tried out all of the different possible sizes until he found that one, just to cause displeasure among those of us trying to read it. >.> Probably not even in English anyways, but still, it taunts me...

I've seen a higher resolution. It says "Energizer" on it.
No, I'm kidding. It looks like just cross-hatches for interest... what makes you so sure it's writing at all? If anything it probably says "113" on it.

Tried looking at the writiing. As much as I almost thought it said 'JEANE' I'm now pretty sure it's just lines. Although it also looks like 'JAK' with a backwards K.
Who just said I'm seeing conspiracies where there are none? Own up!

Tonight, on the Discovery Channel...
Tic-Tocs: What makes them tick?
Sitting on a dock of the bay, a click-clacking resounds over the water. Looking around, I see the source from which the sound emanates: a greenish bird with a long, serrated toucan-like beak. A tic-toc. Named for the peculiar sound now echoing around me.
Our eyes lock, and for a brief moment its as if behind this avian's stare lies the perspicacity of thousands of eyes looking directly into my soul. The hair on the back of my neck stands on edge. Then the bird clacks its beak and the spell is broken.
Still, beneath it all, I have to wonder. Where did these birds come from? And thus I set out upon my expedition...

I figure they're either the descendants of a long forgotten experiment in crossing technology with the Etheric, or just a bit of accidental cross-contamination caused by having a world where robots and magical critters live side by side. Either way they've probably evolved a long way from their origins, just like Diego's robots have.
