Long time reader, new joiner, first post, yada yada yada. @tom - It might be useful, in the Master List, to leave annotations as to which questions Will Not Be Answered, to spare forum newcomers such as myself the indignity of inadvertently asking them anew, striking through the text of such as if they were answered. In other words, the answer to the question becomes "It Will Not Be Answered"... Here's my submission to Unanswered Questions: Will Annie's etheric facial wound ever heal?

Updated! New questions answered (woo!) and questions up from Ch. 25. Sorry I'm late, was away from the internet.

Well, (a) Gamma (per Zimmy's translation) did say she's "pretty sure" nobody else came through. (b) Gamma was asleep. Maybe she just counted heads when she woke up, and by then something had already happened to kick Jack back to "reality".
Partly answered, chapter 25

Actually, panel 2 on page 45 makes it clear that the necklace belonged to Surma, and the fact that Antimony was wearing it implies that she was her daughter (since she would not give it to someone else), and that she was probably dead (she would not give it away except on her deathbed). So this isn't really an unanswered question---the visual language of the comic already makes it clear.

Welcome to the forum, lurker!
I disagree with you on your analysis of the "visual language of the comic" though. That Reynardine realizes something from the necklace is ofcourse clear -- but it's merely an assumption that "she would not give it away except on her deathbed". It may just as well be that "she would not part from her daughter, except on her deathbed". Or "she would not send her daughter to Gunnerkrigg, except on her deathbed". Etc...

Welcome to the forum, lurker! Thanks to thee. It seems to me that what the comic is conveying at this point is that the fact that Annie is wearing the necklace indicates that she has taken the role of her mother, and this therefore implies that she has passed on.

Now, I can't remember which page it was on (I just read it today! D:), but I saw a poster in the background that said "Buy war bonds" What war is this?

We can see that Janet shoots in Mongol style. William probably can use it too, especially if they rehearsed their little trick together. But the Mongolian draw involves a thumb ring. So, the question: did they exchanged those rings? ;D

Doo dee doo, question: Chapter 9: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=157I was wondering, in the upper center of this page we clearly see a grim-reapery figure; but the Grim Reaper is generally not a specific psychopomp, but a figure of european folklore which is associated with a lot of different psychopomps; so this guy could be the breton Ankou, just as he could be Grimnir (the sort-of psychopomp avatar of Odin). So, who is that exactly?

Post by todd on Feb 9, 2010 23:15:29 GMT
According to Tom, he's Ankou.

Ah, thank you then!
Now that I have had it confirmed that it is Ankou, I can get back to my wild speculations, muahaha.

I agree. I also note that a question I am very interested in was not on the list: "Why did Antimony choose Anthony?" Or put another way, "Why did the Antimony/Anthony/Eglamore triangle resolve the way it did?"

I agree. I also note that a question I am very interested in was not on the list: "Why did Antimony choose Anthony?" Or put another way, "Why did the Antimony/Anthony/Eglamore triangle resolve the way it did?" This is already on the list, as the last remaining question on Ch 18 (You meant Surma, not Antimony)

Ah, yes. Sorry about that. I was looking at it more from the angle of what happened to make Surma choose a character we have heard nothing positive about rather than the angle of why Surma and Eglamore broke up, which is why I missed that question. Sorry.

Why couldn't the guides take Jeanne? How did they not know who she is?
They couldn't take her, like Surma... Connection?

Why couldn't the guides take Jeanne? How did they not know who she is? They couldn't take her, like Surma... Connection? I don't know. Remember they couldn't take the boy in the hospital either...The spirit has to choose to go, in some respect. This would explain Jeanne as well: her spirit is blinded by rage and pain, lashing out at anything that comes near.

Tom has said that Coyote himself would be in danger if he met Jeanne, and that the Guides can be killed. So Jeanne certainly needs to become less stab-happy before she can be escorted to the Aether. Further, given how the Guides didn't take Surma because of that whole spirit-transfer thing, Jeanne's spirit being split would doubtless prevent her being taken either.

Aside from Jeanne being dangerous, she's stuck because Diego's arrow is keeping her there.

*necro-ing thread, apologies*
Curious; anyone game for making an updated thread of this? It's nice to have as a reference.
It's interesting to see how many of these questions have been answered now (and how many more have been raised!)

This is possibly better suited for the wiki, where anyone can update it?

True, but in my experience the wiki is underutilized (I checked Red's page the other day and it hadn't been updated in some time, at least since before the chapter where Annie named her).
I might do this myself; I see myself remaining active in the forum for the foreseeable future. And of course I would be open to suggestions from the community to add to the OP.

Here you go. These are the chapters listed in the original post. I made the formatting a little more consistent, fixed some errors, and added a couple of questions of my own. I'll get all the more recent ones later. Chapter 1: The Shadow and the Robot-- What's the point of the tictocs? --How did Shadow 2 get stuck at the Court? Chapter 2: Schoolyard Myths-- Why was Surma bedridden after Antimony was born? -- Answered p. 819-- Those pictures... (unlikely to ever be addressed) Chapter 3: Reynardine-- How did Reynardine know that Surma was dead just by figuring out that Antimony was her daughter? -- Answered p. 804-- Why is the court so deserted/huge? -- How'd Eglamore get to be friends with Sivo? -- How did Reynardine escape? Chapter 4: Not Very Scary-- What is the significance of the "Dulce et decorum est" inscription? Does it mark Mort's tomb? Chapter 5: Two Strange Girls-- Seriously, what the heck is Zimmy? -- How did Zimmy know that Reynardine was more than a toy? (Both of these are sort-of answered by Jones on p. 723, but not entirely) -- What is the significance of "κίνδυνος έντομο" ? --What was Zimmy's experiment? Chapter 6: A Handful of Dirt-- What's the point of the room with the cherries? -- Answered p. 607-- Who is the gardener? -- Answered p. 606-- Where is Anthony and what's he up to? Chapter 8: Broken Glass And Other Things-- Why did the Tictocs save Antimony? -- Mort is "new and inexperienced" - at what? Who was Mort? And why is he the only ghost we see around? -- What's the deal with Jeanne? How could she cross the river and why shouldn't she be able to? Why did she slash Antimony? Why is she beyond the psychopomp's reach? -- What is Gunnerkrigg Court? -- Why did Red and her friend want to go to Gunnerkrigg? Chapter 9: Questions and Answers-- Why is Robot's arm planted in an artificial habitat room? -- Answered p. 607Chapter 11: Dobranoc, Gamma-- Why does Annie's scar show up near Zimmy? (Sort of answered indirectly - the cut is visible in the Ether, and it's implied that Zimmy's craziness has something to do with the Ether) -- Why does rain help her? (Partially answered on p. 740) -- Why do the tic-tocs agitate her? (Implied by art and Jones that they serve as some form of surveillance on p. 724) Chapter 12: Mainly Involves Robots-- Why are they studying so many CPUs? Is Rey right about "trouble in the ranks"? -- What's the extra part on Robot's CPU? Do all robots have it? Chapter 13: A Week for Kat-- Why does Annie wear that makeup all the time? Chapter 14: The Fangs of Summertime-- How does Coyote know about the Eglamore/Surma/Anthony love triangle? (Possibly answered on p. 792) -- Why can't Annie trust the Court people? -- Answered p. 1153-- Why did Ysengrin drop the seeds? -- Why is Ysengrin drawing "closer to the brink of insanity?" -- Answered p. 1089-- Why does Anthony stay away for two years? -- Well, not so much answered so much as clarified; we hear from him two years later on p. 1000, but he's still off in some mysterious place. Chapter 15: Red Returns-- Why is court education for the forest people lacking in basic vocabulary and heavy on science? (Well, on p. 22 and 520 we see that the court doesn't care for much that isn't strictly science) -- Why did Ysengrin bury the bird and blame the court? Chapter 16: A Ghost Story-- Why does Surma say she would be of no use to the guides anymore? -- Answered p. 819-- "The world continues to spin, pup. The boy and his family will ensure it." ?? -- Answered p. 1072Chapter 17: The Medium Beginning-- Why does Jones speak as though she aligns herself with neither the court nor the forest? -- Answered p. 1119-- Eglamore/Jones? -- Answered p. 1118Chapter 18: S1-- Jones: what? -- Answered p. 1113. -- "She died and we did nothing." -- How'd Eglamore get to be friends with Sivo? Could be considered answered in "Ties" (being replaced by the new question there). Not to mention all the animals. And why is the Court accepting them? Is it just a general exchange program or are there more specific purposes for one or both sides? Not sure I follow this one. (If not being able to trust the Court just means they won't always do what she wants and expects, it's not much of a mystery.) Could also be partially or primarily a side effect of his tree shaping. (Note he seems more stable just after Coyote resets him.) At least partially explained in Ysengrin Flips. Answered in Residential. What were the shadow people doing in the Court, though? More of an ongoing plot point now than a mystery.

Chapter 1: The Shadow and the Robot-- What's the point of the tictocs? Chapter 11: Dobranoc, Gamma-- Why does Annie's scar show up near Zimmy? (Sort of answered indirectly - the cut is visible in the Ether, and it's implied that Zimmy's craziness has something to do with the Ether) -- Why does rain help her? (Partially answered on p. 740) I'd say that both of these were pretty comprehensively answered, IMHO.-- Why do the tic-tocs agitate her? (Implied by art and Jones that they serve as some form of surveillance on p. 724) Might this be the point of Tic-Tocs? Drones can do a whole lot more than just surveillance, too. They've already shown that they can work together to stop a student from splatting on the banks of the Annan.

I've got some more answers for you. Full answers in green, partial answers in blue. Chapter 1: The Shadow and the Robot-- What's the point of the tictocs? Surveillance. By whom or to what end is unknown. (See "Why do the tic-tocs agitate Zimmy?")--How did Shadow 2 get stuck at the Court? If not a descendent of these shadows, then we'll probably never know.Chapter 2: Schoolyard Myths-- Those pictures... (unlikely to ever be addressed) Abandoned plotline.Chapter 3: Reynardine-- Why is the court so deserted/huge? -- How'd Eglamore get to be friends with Sivo? -- How did Reynardine escape? Chapter 4: Not Very Scary-- What is the significance of the "Dulce et decorum est" inscription? Does it mark Mort's tomb? Chapter 5: Two Strange Girls-- Seriously, what the heck is Zimmy? -- How did Zimmy know that Reynardine was more than a toy? Given Chapter 38, this shouldn't be surprising at all anymore.-- What is the significance of "κίνδυνος έντομο" ? --What was Zimmy's experiment?Tom has flat-out said we're never going to find out.Chapter 6: A Handful of Dirt-- Where is Anthony and what's he up to? Chapter 8: Broken Glass And Other Things-- Why did the Tictocs save Antimony? -- Mort is "new and inexperienced" - at what? Who was Mort? And why is he the only ghost we see around? -- What's the deal with Jeanne? How could she cross the river and why shouldn't she be able to? Why did she slash Antimony? Why is she beyond the psychopomp's reach?Answered over the course of several chapters. (More specific questions are a separate issue.)-- What is Gunnerkrigg Court? It's a group of people living in one spot. Most of them like to do science, and they have somewhere to teach it to the students. It's said that it started out as a group of refugees.-- Why did Red and her friend want to go to Gunnerkrigg? To live as Humans.Chapter 11: Dobranoc, Gamma-- Why does Annie's scar show up near Zimmy?Reality warps like that when Zimmy's around.-- Why does rain help her? (Partially answered on p. 740)As Jones said, and as evidenced by the reality warp melting away when the rain started, it eases Zimmy's mind. As to why that happens, there's no reason to dispute Jones' conclusion.-- Why do the tic-tocs agitate her? (Implied by art and Jones that they serve as some form of surveillance on p. 724)Zimmy can feel it when she's being watched (and she doesn't like it). The tic-tocs are watching her.Chapter 12: Mainly Involves Robots-- Why are they studying so many CPUs? Is Rey right about "trouble in the ranks"? -- What's the extra part on Robot's CPU? Do all robots have it? Chapter 13: A Week for Kat-- Why does Annie wear that makeup all the time?Because her mom wore it. There doesn't have to be any more reason than that.Chapter 14: The Fangs of Summertime-- How does Coyote know about the Eglamore/Surma/Anthony love triangle? (Possibly answered on p. 792) -- Why did Ysengrin drop the seeds? -- Why does Anthony stay away for two years? Still unknown.Chapter 15: Red Returns-- Why is court education for the forest people lacking in basic vocabulary and heavy on science? (Well, on p. 22 and 520 we see that the court doesn't care for much that isn't strictly science) -- Why did Ysengrin bury the bird and blame the court? Chapter 18: S1-- So what happened between Surma and Eggers? We know they were a couple at one point. It's likely Eglamore's training had something to do with them splitting up.-- Why is Reynardine so much more polite as a wolf? The mind is but a plaything of the body, is it not?Chapter 19: Power Station-- Why does the station mess with Zimmy's head? -- Answered p. 740Still not answered.Chapter 20: Coyote Stories-- Why does Ysengrin hate humans? -- Why did Reynardine try to kill Annie? -- Who was the guy Reynardine killed? -- What is the Court doing re: "Man's endeavor to become God?" -- How much control does Coyote have over Ysengrin? Chapter 22: Ties-- Why couldn't Surma stand Jones? Because Tom was being snarky towards everyone who kept guessing that "the girl in the photo" (Brinnie) was Jones. -- Where is Brinnie now? -- Why were Anja and Surma put in, then switched from Chester? They were switched out because the Court realized they made a mistake.-- What's the tree dog?A glorified Shadow taxi.-- What is the connection between the Rogat Orjak and the dragonslayers? Chapter 23: Terror Castle of the Jupiter Moon Martians-- What does Jones mean by "...not beholden to anyone," and why is Reynardine disappointed? -- What was the seed bismuth? -- Why did humans come to Gillitie forest? -- So, what happened between Sir Young, Diego, and Jeanne? -- Why would a lot of information about the court founding be deliberately hidden? They buried what they did that night...Chapter 25: Sky Watcher and the Angel--Are the tic-tocs really older than the Court? What kind of "divine being" created them? --Who was the "traitor" that Jeanne loved? Some green-skinned fellow from the Forest. From the same kind as the Anwyn, if not one of them.--Who was the member of the Court that refused to participate in the "abhorrent plan?" --What exactly did Diego's device do to Jeanne, and how does it protect the Court? It bound Jeanne's spirit to the Annan waters. She kills anyone who tries to cross, with a sword.--What changes will Robot bring about in the robot society?

I go to work and you guys have done all the hard work! If no one else gets to it first, I think this warrants a new thread. :3 And the addition of the newer chapters. Also, we could have some sort of general for very FAQ (how far in advance does Tom draw his pages, the typeface he uses... man, I had another good one and I forgot it). Very basic stuff. Meh. Gonna go ahead and start building the OP in this post (and adding some more content, such as FS answers when relevant [edit: done with the covered chapters]. -- *under construction* This is a place to keep the growing list of the comic's unanswered questions in a (semi) easy-to-refer-to list. This is built off of the original thread -here-, and was updated with the help of azujax, Nnelg, Per, GK Sierra, and myself. I tried to avoid answers swayed by personal opinion (and my own), and you are free to contest these answers. Feel free to contribute and/or answer questions posted here. You can openly speculate here, or in the other threads available for general discussion and questioning (links to "found on reread thread" and "wild speculation"). Post links if you can, so others can refer to specific pages and FormSpring answers. Thanks! -- Chapter 1: The Shadow and the Robot-- What's the point of the tictocs? || Surveillance, possibly alluded to here (Zimmy hates tictocs, likely because surveillance puts her on edge). By whom or to what end is unknown.-- How did Shadow 2 get stuck at the Court? || Partially answered on p. 976; he's lived there all his life. He is possibly a decedent of these shadowmen.Chapter 2: Schoolyard Myths-- Why was Surma bedridden after Antimony was born? || Answered p. 819-- Those pictures... || Has been stated by Tom that this was a dropped potential plotline, and it is a reference to "The Peanutbutter Solution."Chapter 3: Reynardine-- How did Reynardine know that Surma was dead just by figuring out that Antimony was her daughter? || Answered p. 804-- Why is the court so deserted/huge? -- How'd Eglamore get to be friends with Sivo? || Partially answered on p. 557; it could be assumed that one had a dragon counterpart when one becomes resident dragonslayer-- How did Reynardine escape form the prison that night? Chapter 4: Not Very Scary-- What is the significance of the "Dulce et decorum est" inscription? Does it mark Mort's tomb? || Very slightly addressed hereChapter 5: Two Strange Girls-- Seriously, what the heck is Zimmy? || Sort of answered by Jones on p. 723-- How did Zimmy know that Reynardine was more than a toy? || Sort of answered by Jones on p. 723. Also, see all of Chapter 38.-- What is the significance of "κίνδυνος έντομο" ? || Rough run through Google Translate says it's Greek for "risk of insect."--What was Zimmy's experiment? || Never to be knownChapter 6: A Handful of Dirt-- What's the point of the room with the cherries? || Answered p. 607-- Who is the gardener? || Answered p. 606-- Where is Anthony and what's he up to? Chapter 8: Broken Glass And Other Things-- Why did the Tictocs save Antimony? -- Mort is "new and inexperienced" - at what? Who was Mort? And why is he the only ghost we see around? || new and inexperienced at being dead and haunting, we can suspect.-- What's the deal with Jeanne? How could she cross the river and why shouldn't she be able to? Why did she slash Antimony? Why is she beyond the psychopomp's reach? || The Court did something very bad-- What is Gunnerkrigg Court? || Unanswered, but as Coyote enigmatically put it: "Man's endevour to become god.". Jones offers some origin theories here-- Why did Red and her friend want to go to Gunnerkrigg? || Still unanswered, but now we know animals can come over too.Chapter 9: Questions and Answers-- Why is Robot's arm planted in an artificial habitat room? || Answered p. 607Chapter 11: Dobranoc, Gamma-- Why does Annie's scar show up near Zimmy? || Sort of answered indirectly - the cut is visible in the Ether, and it's implied that Zimmy's condition has something to do with the Ether.-- Why does rain help her? || Mostly answered on p. 740; rain has "raw" ether and it helps her condition-- Why do the tic-tocs agitate her? || Answered on p. 724. Surveilence puts her on edge.Chapter 12: Mainly Involves Robots-- Why are they studying so many CPUs? Is Rey right about "trouble in the ranks"? -- What's the extra part on Robot's CPU? Do all robots have it? Chapter 13: A Week for Kat-- Why does Annie wear that makeup all the time? || Unanswered, although there are theories. and it may be as simple as her mothering having worn it. Answer sorta alluded to here; a form of protection, even if only symbolic or in memory of her mother[/i]. Chapter 14: The Fangs of Summertime-- How does one pronounce Ysengrin? || Tom pronounces it "is-en-grin"-- How does Coyote know about the Eglamore/Surma/Anthony love triangle? || Possibly answered on p. 792-- Why can't Annie trust the Court people? -- Why did Ysengrin drop the seeds? -- Why is Ysengrin drawing "closer to the brink of insanity?" || Certainly helped along by this.-- Why doesn't Annie hear from her father for two years? || Still unknown; "The key word was 'hear'." Chapter 15: Red Returns-- Why is court education for the forest people lacking in basic vocabulary and heavy on science? || Well, on p. 22 and 520 we see that the court doesn't care for much that isn't strictly science.-- Why did Ysengrin bury the bird and blame the court? || It is possible he does not remember.Chapter 16: A Ghost Story-- Why does Surma say she would be of no use to the guides anymore? || Answered p. 819-- "The world continues to spin, pup. The boy and his family will ensure it." ?? || Answered p. 1072Chapter 17: The Medium Beginning-- Why does Jones speak as though she aligns herself with neither the court nor the forest? || Answered p. 1119-- Eglamore/Jones? || (Sorta) answered p. 1118Chapter 18: S1-- Jones: what? || Answered p. 1113. -- "She died and we did nothing." Why do they say this re: Jeanne? || Answered p. 657-- So what happened between Surma and Eggers? || Partially answered on p. 1097; dated, then broke up for some reason.-- Why is Reynardine so much more polite as a wolf? || Rey addresses this here. @ Per: • Yeah, I guess I'd probably put (partially answered on pages 546, 557, and 1096). • Would love more clarity on the whole forest --> court exchange program in general, really. • More of a half-jest, as she (and the readers) were all but lead to believe that Annie was going to be the next medium, but I'd be fine with changing that question to "Why does Coyote tell Antimony that she can't trust people at the court?" • Yeah, Ysengrin does partially explain his hatred for humans on page 1078. • Oh, you're right, on page 607. It does raise the further question of what happened to those shadow people and what did Coyote/the forest hope to accomplish by sending them there. • I'd say questions about Robot's ideology are even more valid as they become a bigger focus of the story. @gk Sierra: • Specifically, those are pretty good. But I guess they all kind of fall under the bigger umbrella question of "What the heck is Zimmy's deal, anyway?" • Could be, but it could not be. Still seems very ambiguous to me and thus, an unanswered question. Just because their visual data links together somehow doesn't make them surveillance. @ Nnelg • I guess that it's likely that Shadow 2 is a child of the shadow people that snuck in on page 555, but then that raises the question on what happened to all of those other folks and/or why is Shadow 2 the only one left? • I'd argue that only bits and pieces of Jeanne's past/situation have been revealed, and those questions are all largely unanswered. • Okay, but why did Red and red's friend decide to be humans? • While those issues specifically are mostly clear, why they actually happen fall under "What is Zimmy's deal," which is still mostly unanswered. • The makeup doesn't need any more reason than that, but someone needs to say it.• Yeah, we still don't know why Anthony's away. But we do get that contact from him two year later, which clarifies that he's still away and very mysterious. I guess it's more of a partial answer. • Likely that the training drove them apart, sure, but completely untouched. Also no explanation as to why Surma chose Anthony, but I guess if one wanted that could be a separate question. • Wha?• I'd argue that 457, 707, and 740 answer this pretty well. Natural rain eases the stress from her mind via ether transmission, and the network of court power plants extract ether from the natural world. • ...I don't get that. Why would Surma dislike Jones based off of Tom's snark? • Oops, you're right. Though why the court misplaced Surma and Anja isn't explained, they probably just made a mistake. • But why would they bury it? Partially answered, imo, unless the answer is "they were ashamed." • Okay...so who is that Anwyn guy that Jeanne loved? Would be great if we had some more info on their relationship. • I'd say that the whole past/current Jeanne situation needs a bunch more clarification than that. @ Eversist Feel free to change up/edit whatever you like, and make a new forum thread, if you like. I don't follow the formspring/wiki at all, so I think someone else would be better suited to the creation and management of a big ol' Q/A thread.
