From looking at Mystery Girl today, I had a brainwave, mostly because there is one current-day character who does resemble her in a few ways.
Gamma. And we know Gamma has some pretty interesting abilities.
Anja is obviously not from an English-speaking country. Who's to say she didn't have a friend who knew her native language back then? I mean for all we know Anja knows Polish...just like Annie and Gamma? (Unless someone knows which language's speakers mixes up English in that special way Anja does, and it isn't Polish.)
But it's possible that a relative of Gamma's or Zimmy's might turn up back in the old days, perhaps in a case of inducing a case of "omigod I had no idea" in the readers.

Awesome how they break down into giggles and smirks after the photo's been taken. Obviously, they specifically decided beforehand do gothic/badass poses.

Anybody notice the inconsistency in their uniforms? James and Anthony are wearing shirt and tie, no jacket, Donald is wearing shirt and tie with a sweater vest, Anja has a shrit and a jacket, Surma is wearing a shirt and a sweater vest, and TGFTP is wearing a sweater (much like the ones Annie and Kat were wearing their first year). Probably by choice, assuming the teachers aren't too strict on how uniforms should be worn.

Drawn speech bubbles!
I love how That Girl's laughing the hardest after the photo, given the pose she went with.

I should have known that somebody would nickname the older generation "Marauders" at some point. I didn't expect it, but I should have.

I mean for all we know Anja knows Polish...just like Annie and Gamma? As far as Gamma is concerned, she is Polish. For all we know, Anja isn’t. Annie received much of her education at Good Hope, a hospital with patients of various ethnic backgrounds, judging from the diversity of psychopomps visiting there. We know that Muut had come for a Mrs. Tolikna when Annie had met him first; “Tolikna” is a Native American name – Miwok, to be exact – meaning “Coyote’s long ear flapping” (yes, that Coyote). Annie had picked up bits of several foreign languages back then, and she had learnt to spell her name using Egyptian hieroglyphs.

It just occurred to me, the third girl is probably important enough, because they all wanted to be in the photo together, and by the ease of her smile I'd say she's close friends with Anja and Surma. So all our obsessing about her might prove to have a point.

Well I'm pretty sure that even if Tom had only meant it to be a minor, "Woah, that's neat." surprise, all of our crazy, obsessive speculation probably just means he is going to make it into a bigger surprise than he would have anyways.

Also, he looks uncannily similar to PZ Myers As completely awesome as a Myers camio would be, I really don't see that much resemblance. And I should know! I've met PZ. (Yes, I'm that cool.)

There'll probably be some present-day action in this chapter as well, if for no other reason than to explain how Annie can include it in her account of her time at Gunnerkrigg. (Though there've been some passages in the comic so far - such as the conversation between the Donlans and Eglamore after Annie and Kat leave in Chapter Seven, not to mention a lot of the Bonus Pages - that she couldn't have known about.) Annie is telling the whole story in retrospect, presumably some time after it was over. She's had opportunity to ask other participants to fill in details. For example, Reynardine assumed Annie stole the picture and Annie didn't say anything meaningful in response - but she could just as well have asked for a copy.

I suspect there will be something "tying" this all together, though. Eh? Eh?
Perhaps it will be photo day for Annie and Kat, too.

I still wonder about the taking of The Photo. In my experience in the US, just being friends isn't enough to get a group photo on school-photo day. You have to be a club or something, at least ostensibly. Is it different in the UK? Because I find myself thinking that there must be more between the six of them than just friendship, and whatever it is must be significant given that it has not yet been revealed.

It's fairly normal to let groups of friends have their picture taken. At least it was in my school.
