Wow, people seem to be taking this page in a rather light heart. I mean, what if those thingies are really there to destroy him and this ends up being the last time we ever see Mort again?
Oh dear, I just scared myself.

I say it's a prank. Like the others said, they're taking an awful long time to destroy Mort.

Maybe they're taking so long because they all somehow "got stuck in the doorway"?

...the heck? Yeah, the fact that Mort, whose job it is to scare people, is terrified at the sight of these demons seems a bit too coincidental. Him scaring himself, though, just doesn't seem that right. He's young and not really that good at his job, so isn't it quite natural for him to freak out? Wait, he's good enough to manifest an entire room full of horrible monsters, yet he's inexperienced enough to be terrified at the sight of them?

Is it just me or does Mort here look like he is attached to something? Look at the very bottom of the big panel.

That's probably just the table he was being sad on. Unless you mean his 'tail' extending outside of the frame.

Poor Mort can't seem to catch a break today. First Annie explodes on him, and now he just might be dragged into an endless abyss of less-than-funny pain by a horde of angry demons.
I'm personally all for Muut pulling a funny on him, though. That or he is trying to cheer himself up. Or it could be something else entirely, and probably is.
Also, yello everybody!

I'm in the "scaring himself to cheer himself up" crowd.

I think it is a new character or set of characters, who are spirits like Mort. Either his friends, or his boss. If his boss, Mort might be reassigned, for reasons unrelated to annie's story.

I believe it may be Mort attempting to cheer himself up not by scaring himself, but by playing with illusions. Since Annie is his only real friend that we've seen so far, perhaps having her insult him so directly after yelling at him made him feel betrayed and, after a little while, lonely. In his loneliness, manifesting these imaginary demons may be his way of feeling as though he has some company (strange as it may be).
I mean, it seems fairly obvious that he's in no real danger, considering how long he was able to just sit there yelling (I imagine this as him yelling, then catching his breath, then yelling, and so on) while they... sat at the door looking menacing? It can't be anything really dangerous, there would have been more action in those last few panels.

Say, uh, err... being a ghost and all, shouldn't Mort be one of those, um, people, Annie was sort of supposed to help pass on and all that?
Hm. I have to admit he seems less traumatized and confused and more enjoying his daily unlife than one would expect, though.

Mort may never have been human; it's possible that he's not the same type of ghost as deceased human souls.

No, he was alive at some point. But, apparently, some ghosts are assigned to haunt ertain locations. It's all very important work, you see.
