I am not so sure that Ketrak would be upset about being summoned that way. He might be upset at being "summoned" at all (becuase he objects to being considered at the behest of Annie) but I doubt he would be at all phased by the method used.
Remember Muut was so kindly disposed to killing the two Fairy girls. I think that most of the psychopomps, given that most of what they do relates to death and yet they do not (normally) feel compelled to interfere with the living, have little problem with killing innocents. I'm sure many of them (especially those that have a judgemental afterlife that punishes the bad and rewards the good) might actually appreciate it.

Bah, Its a worker ant or something. Now if Ann killed a Queen ant, then that would be big, because Ants live in a hive mind structure. No Queen, no order.

I don't suppose anyone would have blinked an eye if Kat had squished that ant just for happening to be nearby, which is obviously what she was thinking of doing. She probably would have, if she weren't squeamish about Ketrak now. Is that better than Annie doing the exact same thing, but for an actual purpose rather than "ew, it's an icky ant"? Actually that ant didn't just happen to be nearby, it was in the test tube and brought out so it could be killed. Have you guys never killed a bug before? I certainly have. Ahh, you're right. There's a whole aspect of today's comic that I missed. I didn't realize that Antimony had brought out the ant for that specific purpose. But Kat still implies that she wouldn't be squeamish about killing it if she didn't know that Ketrak would come.

Psychopomps don’t kill anyone; that’s not in their job description. They arrive only after someone has died. Muut refused to kill the Fairies, and within this comic we have not seen a single example of a psychopomp killing or punishing someone, be they innocent or guilty (and for that matter, we haven’t even seen a psychopomp showing any interest in the question of guilt).

As in Discworld death, yeah. "It'd be a bloody stupid world if people went around getting killed without dying!"

He's the most adorable brain-bleaching monstrosity I've seen in a looong while, that's for sure.

I've never enacted any particular horror upon an ant, although around my old home there was a certain kind of insect called a "greenhead"...
In a particular instance, I managed to catch a living greenhead out of the air without crushing it. Now, I was fairly young at the time, and my idea of revenge was fairly strong, and so this is what I did: I held the bug between my fingers, and with the other hand, I proceeded to carefully tear off its eyes, its wings, and a couple legs, before setting it on the ground to writhe around. Not content yet I picked it up once more, found a spider nearby and... well, you can guess the rest. I'm slightly ashamed now, but I felt absolutely grand at the time.

Thats the kind of thinking that will make you one of the first against the wall when the giant ant space aliens come to conquer our planet. From space. "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords." ;D -Kent Brockman, episode 1F13 "Deep Space Homer" season 5. One of the best episodes ever! Edit: Sorry, off topic. Couldn't resist doing that.

I'm not disturbed by Antimony's action by itself (squishing an ant), but I'm disturbed/worried by the utter disregard she gave to Kat's scruples.
Squishing an ant -- okay. Ignoring your best friend's feelings over it -- not so okay.

I wonder if, at some later point in the webcomic, we'll have Ketrak coming for the soul of a wasp that had died on somebody's windowsill, now that we've got him coming for the soul of an ant that Annie had squashed with her finger. (See Tom's response to the question about what Ketrak looks like, that Mezzaphor had linked to on the first page of this thread, for an explanation.)
It's great to see you here, ariskatsaris; I remember you from the "Gargoyles" forums at Station 8.

Why all this sympathy for an ant? It's not like it has an independent mind. It's the equivalent of tapping someone on the head and killing a single brain cell.

I think I said this somewhere before, but the reason (I believe) that some people are feeling bad for the ant is because we were given a close-up of it, thereby giving it a "face". EDIT: And I don't think Tom's comment for the page helped either. EDIT EDIT: And to think that she was capable of empathising with a falling glass cup... www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=124

I don't think she was saying an ant's life had gained any value in her eyes.

I also got the impression that it wasn't so much "I don't care what you think" as "I am going to save you from spending time beating yourself up about how big a deal something is when it isn't that big a deal"

The vial, really, is what gives me pause. It's that sort of Batman-esque behavior that crosses into creepytown.
Annie: "I need to talk to a psychopomp right now, where's my ant in a vial?"
Ketrak: "BZZ-CLICK. WHY ARE YOU MAKING MORE WORK FOR KETRAK."
Annie: "I want Muut to know that I'm NOT MARRYING HIM! Or that GHOST!"
Ketrak: "WHAT."

I heard that as the same "WHAT" Alucard makes when he gets hit in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Awesome.
