Either way, this suggestion brings a lot more interest to Eglamore's reaction in this strip. That was my first thought, too, although he could have just been disconcerted at the idea of Antimony owning an object that is traditionally a gift between couples. Betcha he's going to go all surly and over-protective when Annie gets her first boyfriend. Oh, God, between Eglamore and Reynardine, poor guy (or, you know, girl. Or robot. Or ghost. Or ... In this comic you can never be sure or nothing.

I wonder who'd be more surly and over-protective if Annie did get a boy-friend: Eglamore or Reynardine?

I'd want them to meet for hot toddies in Eglamore's office to grumble like old biddies over "the boyfriend"
"He's not good enough!" "He's distracting her from finding out what this is really all about and releasing me!... I mean... nice tea."

I debated over whether or not to say "if and when." I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon, and perhaps not within the timeframe of the story itself, but someday (unless she doesn't survive long enough, which I sincerely hope is not the case). I would guess that Eglamore would be the one surly and over-protective, and Reynardine would be over-protective and mocking. But they'd probably want to fight it out over who gets to play chaperone on dates. Eglamore will skulk around in dark corners, trying to simultaneously menace the boyfriend and avoid being spotted by Annie. Reynardine will sneak into Annie's purse, ready to jump out and rip the face off of the boy if he "tries anything." Like, you know, holding hands.

The current talk of Overprotectiveness reminds me of when I was recently introduced to my almost-15-year-old niece's boyfriend.
I said "Hi. I'm Katie's Uncle Michael. I have Swords." I've been waiting her entire life to use that line.

One of the designs around Muut's hand looks just like the head of a fox. Could be a coincidence.

I SO want a niece to be able to do that too xDDD bet the face of the kid was internet material xD not sure what to say about over-protecting relatives, because never been in those situations.

I wonder what Eglamore and/or Reynardine would think of Mort?

Have Eggie or Rey even met Mort? Come to think of it, how many of the characters in Gunnerkrigg haven't met?

As soon as Reynardine finds out about Mort, I suspect he'd start searching for ghost traps of the "Ghostbusters" variety (except that Annie would not let him use them, as soon as she found out about it).

you know, something I've been thinking since Annie started getting mad at mort was "what if mort didn't know what the thing really meant?"
Then again, what if he's simply lying now to do some damage control? It's always possible.

I still like the idea (and hope it turns out to be true) that much of the reason for Annie's response was her troubled thoughts about Reynardine and her mother - so when she came across something that suggested that an etheric being had a serious crush on her, she immediately saw it in that light. If it's true, maybe she'll explain about it at last to Kat in the next couple of pages (since the evidence at the start of the chapter is that Annie hasn't told her how she learned about it from Coyote yet).
