So does anybody have any theories as to why the "etheric Annie" has Rapunzel-length hair? (I don't, but I was wondering if anybody does.) When she was a tiny girl in the hospital, she had short hair and her mom had really really long hair. www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=124 www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=156So now she sees herself as having really really long hair like her mother's but different - straight not curly. Surely that long curly hair, straightened out, would go on practically forever in the mind of a four-year-old?

Speaking as a female who once had hair just a little longer than Annie's--you can really feel like you have more hair than you do. Mine was thick, and slightly wavy, just like hers. And once you let that hair loose on a windy day, the Rapunzel feeling gets even stronger cause it's *everywhere.* I have basically Kat's grown-out hairstyle now, but I know that feeling of when I had so much hair I could barely control it. And that can affect your self-image in your head, because then you imagine yourself with even longer hair. So I think that's how Annie sees herself, and in that realm things seem to be very flowy and wavy, with maybe an underwater-ish feeling that makes her hair just undulate around her like that.

A thought, maybe its like the silver chord in astral projection, the hair connects her back to her real body and keeps her from being lost in the ether

When she was a tiny girl in the hospital, she had short hair and her mom had really really long hair. Yes, that might indeed be why she changed her hair-style as she got older. Much like the theory that she wears make-up because it was the kind of make-up that Surma wore (incidentally, I noticed that in the "Surma's death" flashback in Chapter Two, Annie's already wearing that make-up as she stands by her dying mother) - that and the "etheric defense" theory sound like the most probable explanations for why she wears it.
