Unless Ayilu's spell didn't work on Bugsy, and Bugsy just meant to say "Pretty impressive, Ayilu, but I'd rather be sleeping". Well, we don’t know whether it was the first time this kind of nonsense happened in her class. That week.

I wonder how many of those going with the court know that its being powered by children and how many would be horrified to find out Yes

Omega is still out there, and I can't believe she would let Annie disrupt the Court's plans by naming/ saving/ unplugging the Court's .... astrophysicists, or Star Ocean batteries, or whatever they are. Knowing something is happening is not the same as being able to stop it. What, exactly, could Omega do here? If the faeries do need to stay hooked up to whatever this is for the star ocean to work, she can't exactly teleport them away in order to prevent them from being named. And Annie (and Bugsy, and presumably any of the faeries with names) can do all this in the ether, anyway, which Omega can't see. And Omega's already taken hostages, so it's not like that threat will work. She could blip Annie and Kat away from there since Bugsy doesn't seem likely to try naming them herself. I think something has been said in the comic before about them not being able to do so (I wanna say it's a contractual thing). But she also told Annie she looked forward to seeing what she would do, so maybe she's just munching popcorn somewhere and watching what unfolds right now. She may think that things have progressed too far for Annie to be able to stop them.

Regarding Ω, I'm hoping that all her jerkery is only a façade, and what she has done so far has been to test Annie in preparation for something big. Of course, her being a real jerkass and finally and utterly getting what she deserves would be totally fine as well.

I feel like I've never quite understood the fairies' culture/sense of morality beyond them being unpredictable and 'odd' (which is perhaps part of the point) but these last couple pages brought me closer to it, and it's something that aligns to the mythology around fairies. The fact that contracts/agreements made are taken very seriously and breaching them is more unacceptable than, say, killing someone while staying within the terms of the contract. Hopefully the fact that the Court have broken their promise will make it OK in their eyes for Annie to fulfil its terms by giving the kids names. Even better perhaps would be Kat naming them because there's a more solid lawyerly argument to be made for her being a representative of the Court, since Annie is after all the forest medium. Yep, that's exactly it. Fae do NOT breach contracts....if you manage to meet the terms. They WILL try to trick you or give you terms that they know you can never meet, but if you somehow get around that they will not break their word. It's a very twisted mindset to human thinking. If the purple haired girl had been named and THEN drained Bugsy would likely still not care because the terms were fulfilled. Most of the etherics are the same way. Coyote never (directly) lies, Renard thought it was natural that he'd become the Court's property after killing one of their own, Loup took his non-aggression pact with Robot seriously, and the demons who messed with Tony did technically give him what he wanted. When you're a living story, violating your own narrative is apparently almost unthinkable.

It is slightly strange how she acts for an ostensibly 19th century woman, who never acted in that manner in the glimpses we see of the past. Why would her personality have changed so radically? I might expect she would become more cynical, but more bombastic? Why?

I think something has been said in the comic before about them not being able to do so (I wanna say it's a contractual thing). Annie is perfectly capable of blipping herself around, as we have seen. Only side effect is a little fire. Blipping Kat is taking a hostage, which is already par for the course. And, also, good luck with that. I can't explain Bugsy. We saw that Red named Ayilu, so at the very least, a faerie with a name can give a name to another faerie.

I thought omega was bombastic because the distortion finally gave her a body in which she could move around. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2950

I might expect she would become more cynical, but more bombastic? Why? In the past she suffered from chronic exhaustion, sensory overload and (probably) pain. Then she had 100 years of disembodied existence, whatever that felt like, and now she's healthier and more mobile than she's ever been in her life. Why wouldn't she be ebullient? I can't explain Bugsy. We saw that Red named Ayilu, so at the very least, a faerie with a name can give a name to another faerie. Annie validated the name before Ayilu accepted it, though. Maybe that was a crucial step?

Aliyu had fulfilled her end of the contract and earned the name. The fae kids being drained have not fulfilled their terms yet, so they haven't "earned" their names, which means Bugsy might not be capable of breaching their contract and naming them early.

When you're a living story, violating your own narrative is apparently almost unthinkable. Yes, the creatures of the ether basically ARE stories, given what we have been told about the ether. They can't change what they are or go against their nature without grievous harm if they're even capable of it. That would be akin to a human attempting to change themselves into something other than human. Even if it were possible it couldn't be accomplished without essentially destroying their humanity and what they are. Your mention of being a living story also reminds me of the way the Fae are represented in the Paranoid Mage web novels. Fae choose a storyline to follow and they MUST adhere to it or they weaken and can die/be defeated/overthrown etc. Whatever story they choose becomes their entire life/identity.

Fair, but no one in the Court gave Annie permission to make such a contract, either, and Ayilu certainly didn't fulfill her agreement with the Court. And Annie just outright named Red & Boy with Brown Hair. So there appears to be a lot of slop involved in the rules around naming. Maybe it's as simple as Annie saying, "Bugsy, give them all names". Or maybe Bugsy just didn't know that she could, and never tried (or cared enough to).

Sure, you can't become not-human without destroying your human self.

Or maybe Bugsy just didn't know that she could, and never tried (or cared enough to). So, this ties back into fae trickery. Annie naming Red was an accident. Red didn't take any action to violate her contract, and being fae she's not going to care if Annie violated anything and thus faces any sort of consequences. And in Aliyu's case they just made another contract with the same prize but more swiftly attainable. Since Annie is technically part of The Court the fae are more than willing to choose the interpretation that The Court is offering the new terms. The Court's internal affairs are none of their business. As Bugsy would say "that sounds like a them problem". And in the case of Brown Haired Boy, the interpretation can also be taken that the fairies don't really pay much attention to what the court does and just take their names when they arrive. Again, they're not really picky on adherance to rules other than keeping their promises if you manage to best them. And if a name is given by a court member then in their eyes they obviously must have fulfilled their contract if a name is being given. As for Annie telling Bugsy to name them, that could possibly work, it depends on how Bugsy is interpreting the terms of the contract.

And Bugsy might not want to hand out names, but I'm sure Kat, Shadow and Renard will happily do so.
