Boxbot would be an absolute masterstroke.
Guessing barnacle though on account of he's got those little tendrils going on like open barnacles do, and cause it's thematically appropriate with how he sent all those other robots off to sea while he himself stayed encased in a hard shell refusing to detach from his old life.

New theory: I think Mystery Nuperson might be the former Skywatcher robot. MNP's obsession with seeing makes me think of an observer character, and with how many robots have completed the Numen transformation I'm surprised we haven't come across a Numan from earlier in the comic, minus Arthur.
Also, for the record I frigging love Skywatcher's original design. I want to get a robotic mantis tattoo with sunglasses, and Skywatcher's OG body is definitely part of that inspiration.

We have seen the barber robot after his transformation (and he's still a barber). But I really like your idea! MNP's lanky design could even be a subtle hint at a former insectoid body, and who to have more knowledge than the average robot/NP than an observer by profession, capable of flight and probably often overlooked?
Also, you're right, Sky Watcher's mantis body is the coolest robot body in the whole comic.

After Robot says he doesn't want Shadow to see him like this, and we see Shadow watching, meaning it's too late, Shadow hops down off the balcony and approaches Robot, telling him he's there. Robot says that this (presumably meaning his transformation) is his "penance" (for what, he doesn't say). But then we see the Mystery NP – she hasn't run off or anything; she joins Annie and Shadow near Robot. Annie asks her what she's doing, and MNP replies that she wants to see.
So MNP is Jones now, the Wandering Eye? No, I don't seriously think MNP is Jones. Well, it's interesting that MNP didn't run off. It's as if she had one plan (to make contact with the Angel; it didn't work), then had another plan (we never found out, but she was awfully mischievous-looking about it), and now she's got yet another plan. I guess they could all be the same overarching plan, but I don't know what that would be.
Tom's note: "Penance for what?" What does Robot think he needs to do "penance" for, and is he right? Well, if he thinks he's doing penance for not accepting a NP body, he's right. This transformation wouldn't have happened if he'd gone full NP. But I'm not sure that's what he means. Perhaps he feels guilty for attempting to take a role for himself at the right hand of the Angel. Perhaps he even feels guilty for the things he's done to influence Kat to become the Angel. Well, as always, I hope we find out what's going on!

I think the penance is for much older and much larger actions. I can see two possibilities: 1. Penance for more or less forcing Kat into the role as the Angel. A lot of what Robot has done has been extremely manipulative towards that end. 2. Penance for what he did to Jean (and her lover). This assumes that Robot has a piece of Diego inside him, either due to Diego setting that up on purpose, or leaving a piece of himself in S1 which infected Robot. There may still be timey-wimey stuff involved too but at this point I don't think that's the most important part.
I've always said that I think Kat made a mistake cutting off Diego's final words playback before it finished!

I also think it's old. And probably complicated. It may involve why he was boxed for heresy when Annie found him. The other seraphs have been going on about how he is a liar and he led the, into exile. He has sacrificed a lot to put Kat on the path to creating a way for the robots to make the leap to organic life. And to keep her there. We know his belief in the prophesy of the angel made him a controversial figure in robot society long before he met Kat or Annie. And when Annie bust him out of robot prison, his was far from the only chip chilling in a tiny cell. Kat's face was the first he saw when he was hooked up to sensors again. We don't know when Robot's chip was first created. If S13 was Robot's first body, or just the latest in a series. He's one of Diego's heralds, but he's been tampered with by Y's, jailed by his peers, tinkered with by Kat, paperclipped, sliced in half, rebuilt, and a test subject for Kat's developing biologics. And he fell in love. That's a lot of very different influences packed into one consciousness. We don't even know how long he was around before Annie found him. Around her, he usually displays such child like behavior. His behavior with the other robots, especially the seraphs, takes a very different tone. Same with Loup. It takes a certain amount of sophistication to make promises out of both sides of your mouth and maintain them over time. We may be about to discover even wilder influences in depths as yet unplumbed. |
