I've used telnet before, but I don't remember ever having an out-of-body experience.

Kat gets points for enthusiasm but somebody does need to sit her down and teach her about informed consent.

I look forward to Kat's explanations of how the weirdness we are about to see isn't magic.

But it appears that Kat is matter-transporting Annie and Paz somewhere where they can help her. Huh, that makes me wonder if Kat has ever tried out her matter transference system on living beings before. I mean, if this is the way to get to her computer then she most likely has. But then this begs the question if she got some animals to try it out on (Caught insects? Mice from the lab Paz works at?), or if she tried it out on herself first as well?

Kat: "OK, so my magnetic coil thingy overloaded and exploded, sure, and I have a few protocols that really need some debugging, and my consciousness is locked out of my unconscious body, but hey, it's great in here. Come on in!"
In the American South, a statement such as that^ is traditionally preceded by "Hold my beer, watch this!"

Any prognostications for what specific challenges the girls will face as they gain access to Kat's new computer? Going with the base assumption that Kat has prearranged access to her computer for for guests with gaming in a Dr. Disaster sort of way, I'm thinking they'll have to complete some sort of scavenger hunt for eclectic objects which will then be used in a series of less-than-intuitive ways to either trigger a restart or open a backdoor which they will use to manually reset the system. I think the instant reset would be more dramatic so I'm going to guess that. Overall it will be a reference to a video game that came out in the late 1980s-early 1990s. The following is just an example of what I'm expecting, not the specific items or actions: Search Alleyway, find item Dime. Give Dime to Green Grocer, receive item Banana. It could contain some prompts. With possible cost to SAN as they accumulate. Sure, I can give you the GREEN KEY, but first I need some WHEAT so I can cook bread for my sick mother! And then… Why yes, I could give you some WHEAT, but the DOORKNOB fell off my door and I can't get inside! ...and so forth until the girls are ready to murder Kat. Oh. Dr. Disaster adores Jones because she was the only one who did not try to clobber him after that scenario. Mystery solved!

Actually, it's more like a transformation matrix in PostScript. Or a couple of translations and rotations in the GIMP.

[ Organ Grinder's Monkey pelts the girls with garbage and debris.] Search Alleyway, find item Rusty Key. Use Rusty Key with Bus Terminal Locker, find item Debit Card. Give Debit Card to Bus Station Attendant, receive items Bus Ticket to Birmingham and Debit Card. Give Bus ticket to Birmingham to Bus Driver. Enter Bus. [Travel to Birmingham.] Exit Bus. Search Parking Lot, find item Empty Crisp Packet. Give Empty Crisp Packet to Fashion-Victim Fairy, receive item Pixie Dust. [Go] North. North. North. East. Search Woods, find item Golf Ball. [Go] East. Use Pixie Dust with Golf Ball, receive item Magical Golf Ball. Give Magical Golf Ball to Frustrated Golfer, receive item Limousine Key. ...and so forth until the girls are ready to murder Kat. Continuing with the Point and Click Adventure Game theme: or the Cyberspace section from the game Beneath A Steel Sky.

"Annie, in order for my system to debug and evolve itself, anyone who dies within the machine has their consciousness uploaded and analysed to determine the cause of the errors and conflict, this causes a new iteration of the system to be built"
"So... like the Ether and ghos---"
"No, not at all like that!"

Entertainingly my ads while scrolling the forums today are trying to warn against workplace injury.
Kat DOES seem like she'd be a real risk to the liability insurance policy, Google Ads algorithm, you're right.

I've used telnet before, but I don't remember ever having an out-of-body experience. Me neither, but then it was under DOS on 80386 (without 387). Continuing with the Point and Click Adventure Game theme: or the Cyberspace section from the game Beneath A Steel Sky. As a form of user interface it‘s called Microsoft Bob™… Speaking of which, anyone wants to filk on the song “Personal Jah” for Microsoft Bob? Because you would have to be pretty far in Jah’s domain to voluntarily install that.

That’s where we remember that Kat did visit Zimmingham once… Did she? I thought that Kat was a fake, and she never really went in there. Unless you count the boat trip

If anything, it’s more substantial for Kat than the usual version could be. Annie & Jack style misadventure could be a weird mind trick. The boat trip was not.
