She's seen an opportunity to edge Annie out as the most important person in Kat's life and is taking it, she won't settle for second place.
Jealousy wins over sense, again.

I still can't tell if Paz is all aboard that Kat Upgrade train, or if she's about to calmly pull Annie into the other room and have a total breakdown over Kat losing her mind and that they have to stop her somehow.
[edit]...Personally, I'm all aboard the Kat Upgrade train. Who am I to stop a young technodeity from achieving her dreams? I say give her the spinal scholarship. Let her attend Transhuman High early. Give her all the AP classes in exponential self improvement. Who's it hurting really? Besides literally Kat herself, I don't see a topical anesthetic on that tray. But that's beside the point, which is: if we're gonna have robot overlords, I'd rather them have Kat's brain than whatever the hell OpenAI or Google are doing.

I... don't think Paz is jealous of Annie? At least not in any significant way. Also it's not like Annie is throwing a fit and Paz can come out of this looking better in comparison. Annie literally just expressed some concern in a rather mild way.

Annie literally just expressed some concern in a rather mild way. Yeah it could just be my cynicism showing. Kat is pitting them against each other a bit though. Paz is definitely sincere in her concern for Kat but it wouldn't break her heart to make Annie appear as the negative nancy either. I still can't tell if Paz is all aboard that Kat Upgrade train, or if she's about to calmly pull Annie into the other room and have a total breakdown over Kat losing her mind and that they have to stop her somehow. This is also a good one, but I still think something like that could be used to set Annie up to be the dissenter and Paz as Kat's voice of support but... that's another cynical take.

I hoped Paz would be against this. Although she apparently has agreed to do it, she doesn't look too enthusiastic about it.

What are the chances paz is just going to poke her in the neck and toss the chip. Probably not good since she looks like she wants to believe in kat.

Hm, Kat is looking quite cartoony on this page. I hoped Paz would be against this. Although she apparently has agreed to do it, she doesn't look too enthusiastic about it. I hoped so, too, but in order to go too far, Kat will need someone to support this endeavor. Aside from that, what's the last panel supposed to represent? Most likely the passage of time.

Paz and Annie teamup. C'mon. Paz and Annie teamup. Save your girl from her unhinged self. And if they do an intervention (even the softest suggestion of one), it might be the catalyst for Paz and Kat separating. Any feeling of disconnect would feel worse with Annie because Kat has been deeply connected to her from almost the beginning of GC. Kat was always down for anything Annie-related, so long as she was in on it, no matter how dangerous/weird – messing with time to make the Tic-Tocs, refusing to go to bed and making a hovercraft to fetch her, creating a device for the Jeanne plot, sneaking out, the most recent thing with Loup. The only time they came close to falling out, it was because Annie (unintentionally) cut her out. If Annie balks after Kat has cut her in on her own wild plan (whether it's at the outset or at the 11th hour), I'd imagine that their relationship might transform into "I'm confiding in you less about what I'm doing because you don't understand, but I'm still going to do what's best for my vision and your safety."

There have been questions about why doesn't she ask actual adults, like actual surgeon Tony. Has it been posited yet that she HAS asked them, and they did the adult thing and said no?

Oh, asking Tony would have to be last resort. He's the most viable option in terms of knowledge + lowest narc tendencies, but I think he'd differentiate between experimenting with robots/things outside yourself and experimenting with your own body... Especially since he has personal experience with that. Whatever Kat would tell him, he'd just hear a fusion of his worst nightmares: the folly of trying to interface with powers outside yourself for a personal goal + a child (a child well-loved by his own child, who he'd failed under similar circumstances) endangered. And other adults would instantly narc.

Paz finally says something about Kat's plan, but all she does is ask whether Kat thinks it's safe, which of course she does. Kat has collected what she thinks are all the medical supplies they'll need, but Paz knows of some more things they'll need (not that she tells us what they are; that's not important anyway). The important thing is that Paz's attitude seems to be that she doesn't like it, but if Kat thinks it's OK, then she'll learn to live with it, which is a GREAT basis for a relationship, let me tell ya! We don't see Annie until the 8th panel of this page, hanging back while Kat and Paz smile at each other, and at that point it's unclear whether she'll be participating or not. Paz seems willing, if not enthusiastic. And then there are three narrow panels with the same background gradient suggesting time passing. So I guess on Monday we either see the new improved Kat, the end of the world, or perhaps a fast-forward to a later scene (possibly one involving the new improved Kat and/or the end of the world). I keep remembering this. Is this that day?

I'm starting to think it's Kat's behavior, that's making this all weird. If she had plainly said, that it was an arm implant to control a large rack-moving robo-arm, would we have even blinked? So what "red flag" was too red? The implant being more brain oriented? The adjacency of the Omega Device? Lack of safety oversight? All of the above?
For me, I'm thinking it's Kat's behavior. She's acting weird about it. The lack of oversight is a big "red flag", but the way Kat had this all setup is strange. This isn't like she's just charging ahead, without thinking things through. She had asking them planned out. It's odd.

Is that supposed to go just under the skin, or does it need to go inside the bone and be connected to her nervous system? Because, if it is the latter, then both Kat and Paz are crazy...
Anyways... does Kat understand that some of the Court's tech is partially etheric..? 'Cause, you really don't want that stuff wired to your brain...

It's possible that Paz's kinda blankness in this scene is to emphasize to us how inscrutable she seems to Annie in the moment, rather then being intended to be the most authentic Paz move here. It's also worth noting that we've not seen too much of what Paz gets up to lately; it's been pretty well established that everyone in the court gets up to some level of shenanigans, so maybe she's just been more accustomed to this sorta thing with her own adventures. What we do know of what Paz gets up to is that it includes some level of animal testing, which would make sense that 'safety' of the 'subject' is her chief concern.
I'm personally of the mind that this sort of stuff can be dangerous not necessarily because of unintended consequences or strain or dehumanization, but because it makes the brain less of a black box. Even on an individual level, what happens if someone else manages to hack Kat's computer while she's hooked up to it? Would they have access to her mind, or at least her sight and hearing?

I don't see a topical anesthetic on that tray. anaesthetic is a tricky thing with neurosurgery because sometimes the only person that knows when something is going wrong is the patient

Paz is just…resigned. It breaks my heart to see it. Remember, Paz has seen Kat’s robo-goddess form. I think she’s decided that Kat is destined for something greater, and not to stand in her way. Whether it is for great good or great harm, Paz cannot say and will not attempt to decide for Kat. Really great couple of pages.

This reads to me like Paz is stalling/pretending to agree so that as soon as she has the chance she can drag Annie aside in another room and suddenly break her serenity to fly into a "She's gone CRAZY!" panic attack.
