As everyone knows, there are a lot of questions surrounding the Court, Ether, the move, and why the Court is so interested in ether (even if they have to steal it, probably harming or killing a god). I've posted a few theories about this in other threads.
Anyway, I was re-reading some stuff and ran across this, which I think contains more info than I realized previously.
So actually, no new theories yet, but some interesting factoids that may help provide a different point of view? Selected quotes from that page, and comments follow:
Jones: "The court found a way to extract etheric energies from the earth. This particular station uses a form of evaporation to extract it from the water in the lake."
This tells us that the court knows a fair amount about the ether. It is strongly implied that the other stations used other processes to extract ether from other sources. So a lot of experimentation and research has been done. I guess that makes sense, even if they only know how to use it coarsely, as energy in a battery, more or less. I wonder if any of these other processes were interesting at all?
Kind of interesting that they can extract it "from the earth". That certainly makes it sound like a part of the natural way of things, and perhaps not something to screw around with! Also, we know from current events that they think they need a really large source of ether, and we already knew they shut down the power plants. So that seems to imply that the amount of ether energy they can bleed from the earth passively is limited, and not enough for their purposes.d
Jones: "and Zimmy... Well, try to imagine a station such as this one in the mind of a person."
This actually seems a lot more specific than I thought at the time. We know that natural rain really helps Zimmy to mellow out. So maybe Jones was speaking precisely when she said "a station such as THIS one". I guess Zimmy actually collects etheric energy from natural sources, but can't use it as directly as someone like Coyote. If you think of Zimmy as someone who is constantly charging up her brain with energy from the environment, and not on purpose, it might help to explain some of her attitude - that has to make one cranky! Constant headaches maybe? Feeling full, in a way?
The effect of the rain, then, is probably either a grounding effect, that let's her release some excess charge or at least equalize it.
Without Gamma around as a heat sink, Jones says "... can lead to distortions that present themselves in the physical world.".
That's probably the most interesting comment. It sounds to me like Jones is saying the stuff Zimmy makes happen is real! At least some of it? Again, I've always kind of thought they were getting pulled into Zimmy's mind when she freaked out due to etheric imbalance in her brain or whatever it is, but maybe it manifests in the real world more than previously thought. Really, this is consistent with Renard's fears - he wasn't worried about a bad trip, he was worried about real, bad effects, things that Zimmy could do to him. Also, is this a hint that Jones has experienced Zimmyland? Whatever it really is... Jones and Renard both think that Zimmy can cause real changes, and we also know this is true based on what she did to the Annies!
Obviously there is more to the Zimmy situation, like the mind-reading and the multiple planes, like where we saw Gamma and Renard hang out and chat while watching the Annies and the elf kids, but perhaps where the Annies and the elf kids were was real. At least temporarily. I still feel like Zimmyland is at least in part inside Zimmy's head, but maybe it is more of a localized reality distortion? Based on Gamma knowing about the Toy Store and various comments about it being like the city they came from, maybe it's a scenario she keeps re-creating for some reason.
I'm not going to link it, but the Seraphs on the boat robot treated Zimmy as a battery, kinda like the court thinks of the ether. One who could be blackmailed into doing their bidding on demand. I guess it makes sense they would have the same info as the court, even if they are part of Robot's cult now.
I wonder if they also talk to or work for Omega? Not directly Ether-related, as far as I know.
