The Ol'Reliable: use a dress to look girly to the one that has seen you always in tuxedo.

A dress with a cracked egg...because she broke out of her Shell.

Ah. the loop and problem of being in it. "Oh, don't worry Shell, it's all so far off the rails we could just raise sails at this point".

Listen, everyone. If there was ever a time I wanted Gunnerkrigg forums to come together and expound endlessly on a topic, itâs this one.
Letâs talk fashion.

Only now is the Court finding out about the New Peeps? How long has it been since the previous chapter, I wonder?

Listen, everyone. If there was ever a time I wanted Gunnerkrigg forums to come together and expound endlessly on a topic, itâs this one. Letâs talk fashion. I think it depends on how old Shell is. The outfit is cute, although I think she's lacking some accessories like a necklace or bracelet or a headband, but it makes me think of 1960s teenagers at a dance. Which, there's nothing wrong with that look. That's the look that Zooey Deschanel wears a lot, and especially when she was on New Girl. It's kind of vintage, and the eggs are a modern twist on it. But since Shell was working for the Shadow Men, I kind of assumed she was older, and it's not a look I think works for everyone. So in theory I like it, but maybe not for Shell.

Her dress is the chapter icon. I guess we now know Tom's buffer is at least 15 pages long.

Annie: "you see, after Kat broke the flow of time with The tic-toc to save me, she went about becoming a goddess and turning robots into living beings with souls and whatnot" Shell: "she... WHAT?"

Listen, everyone. If there was ever a time I wanted Gunnerkrigg forums to come together and expound endlessly on a topic, itâs this one. Letâs talk fashion. Personally not a fan of the fried egg pattern, but I love off the shoulder looks, they work well with just about anyone (which is different from those "cold shoulder" tops that, in my opinion, were a nice idea that didn't really execute well.) The strappy shoes look...nice I guess? Is it me or are her feet drawn tiny? Or maybe it's the perspective. Strappy shoes aren't my cuppa but I'm not sure what I would use instead. All in all, very nice look.

The outfit is cute, although I think she's lacking some accessories like a necklace or bracelet or a headband[...] ...I have approximately zero fashion sense, but I immediately understood this to be correct. Huh. I guess what those would do would be to visually anchor the edges of her attire further out. Right now she looks naked from the elbows out and shoulders up, and a few accessories would I guess provide "coverage" and dispel that impression.

All in all, very nice look. Strappy shoes seem a bit impractical for Shell, but as someone already pointed out, that's probably the point. It's a nice look though! While we're talking fashion, I love Kat's outfit and ESPECIALLY Annie's. She's gotten so much better at casual wear! Very sporty but it still feels like her.

Feel like it's distinctly possible for those to be stylized daisies or flowers, rather than fried eggs, flowers being a much more standard pattern to put on a dress. Or at least, that the reference to eggs/her name is meant to be dual/secondary by their resemblance to eggs. Not necessarily that Shell just bought a dress with eggs on it.

They could be Matilija poppies. The "egg shell" symbolism is too obvious to miss.

Hm. Remember back when Shell was first introduced, and a lot of commenters & forum members had a hard time gendering her? I kind of wonder if one of Tom's minor goals for this scene was to just make sure to dispel any remaining uncertainty.
Other thoughts on the page:
I love the contrast between her expression and her dialogue in the last panel. You can really hear the strain in her voice that comes from speaking through gritted teeth.
I know that it's not necessarily December in GC like it is IRL, but I can't help but headcanon that she's actually really cold in that dress, but wore it anyway because she's just that committed to looking good today.
Finally, based entirely on Annie's expression in that second-to-last panel, I'm guessing that she did actually invite Shell here, but wasn't expecting her to be out of uniform when she showed. Some sort of misunderstanding?

The skirt pattern is reminiscent of, though not identical to, the Unikko flower from Marimekko. Back in the mid-80s I wore a lot of that stuff.
As for wearing retro styles, doesn't everyone these days? đ I swear on my grandmother's grave the proper word for how I dress and live is "beatnik". Be yourself, daddy-o đ
