Getting out of the Forest is going to be a challenge for the ones still trapped when they can't tell where it ends and the Court begins.

I'm sure the shield designers are crestfallen.
He's got to be going for the Tooth, right?

As usual, my impressions: The Forest's border was turning into a wall as the people from the Court were trying to escape, and indeed it had begun to look like some kind of wave. We have seen Cvet and Shell outside the Forest along with several unnamed Shadow Men, and we've seen Annie inside the Forest being bounced up and down by various fundamental geometric shapes made of stone, dirt, and wood, but we haven't seen Aata, James, or Parley for a while. On this page, the Forest's border is stretching up higher and higher, looking like a wave that's about to break on a shore. But this wave has reached up and over the Court border far enough that it's encountering the purple shield made by the robots. Of course, the Court has been removing robots over time, so perhaps it isn't as strong as it was, and it looks as if cracks are appearing in the shield. Will it hold? If it does, will Loup send more waves until it falls? If it falls, what will happen then? Most of the buildings near the Forest border have been standing empty (other than the robots) since the evacuation, although Zimmy said the Chester students hadn't been moved away from the border – though I get the impression that they aren't right next to the border – and that the tree elves had been housed near the Chester students. But how far into the Court can such a wave reach? Obviously we have no idea. What we do know is that Loup at least claimed (though he could have been lying) that the shield, even at full strength, was like a soap bubble to him. He hasn't been walking around causing destruction in the Court for months because he had a deal with Annie – she'd bring him the goose bone and lake water, and he wouldn't attack – but now he's got both of those things, so the deal's over, its terms fulfilled. But we also know he can't see very far into the Court, meaning either that his powers have a range limitation or that the nature of the Court attenuates them the farther in he tries to reach. As usual, we'll have to see.

Next page: The shield fails because somebody has secretly been collecting robot CPUs.

Next page: The shield fails because somebody has secretly been collecting robot CPUs. Maybe, but it's hard to say if Kat making new bots really has anything to do with it. I don't know how much to trust Loup when he's bragging about his power, but he said he had figured out how to destroy the shield right after his first attack. I kinda assumed he was lying, but at the same time I don't think what he was saying was that unreasonable.

Well, we haven't seen her perform the transfer on robot CPUs other than those the Court deactivated to let the tree elves in. But then we also don't know whether the Court planned to outfit these robot chassis with their overrides or put the CPUs back.
I also assumed Loup was lying back then. But the cracks appearing in the shield in the last panel seem to tell us he either wasn't lying after all, or at least correctly assumed that application of enough raw power would overcome the shield.

Now that I've thought about it, with either answer (unless I'm missing somthing) Kat making the shield weaker doesn't really matter, assuming she did make it weaker. Loup either knew how to break it the whole time or he just ended up having to use a little less mass to shatter it, which doesn't matter considering we have no evidence this is the absolute limit of his power or that he has a limit.

I imagine he can only manipulate the Forest's trees and ground like this, which puts a certain limit on his abilities, but generally you're probably right.

If she did weaken the shield, that leads to interesting philosophical questions. Why would a magical shield get stronger or weaker depending on the number of robots casting it? Which part of a robot is responsible for casting magic? If it's the CPU, can't they do it as soon as they wake up in their new bodies? If it's the chassis, can't the Court make their cast-off bodies do it with their creepy backup control chips?

If it's the chassis, can't the Court make their cast-off bodies do it with their creepy backup control chips? Why would the shield get stronger or weaker? Well, it gets holes if you remove robots, as seen when several were removed in order to create an opening for the tree elves to pass through. Apparently the area a single robot can cover is restricted. As for which part is needed - I assume both. The CPU to store and run the program and the chassis which apparently has the hardware to emit the energy necessary for forming a shield. The Court could probably have the overridden robots project the shield again if they knew the program code and how to implement it. But as we have seen, the robot's operating code is not possible to be represented in the usual way as written language, and so far nobody besides Diego and Kat seems to have been able to read it. The Court is, as far as we know, not able to reprogram the robots. Furthermore, as we have seen, if it is actual Etheric energy being channeled here, it has to come from somewhere else. Just like when Donald uses magic, he can do it using technology, but only by remotely accessing Anja's Etheric computer. The robots are of course dependent on technological means as well. But unless someone found a way to draw Etheric energy directly from the air (from the humidity present in the air perhaps?) the source of Etheric energy they are accessing must be somewhere else. It is likely somewhere in the Court, but so far nothing points to the Court officials knowing where exactly it is.

Google Translate tells me that the word "aata" is from the Marathi language, and its English translation is "aata"...
