Here's a fun discussion to have.
Gunnerkrigg Court as D&D and other RPG system, what would each main character's class and race be?
And how about someone statting up the items found in the series?

I think Annie could be a Sorceror Fire Genasi, with enough levels in Bard to get the College of Spirits, for all her Psychopomp things.

Paz – cares for and talks to animals, so druid? Kat – technomancer/artificer MU. Also Angel. Parley - apprentice paladin Eglamore - full-on paladin Jones - goddess, of the unmoved mover type. Anya & Donald - technomancer MU, probably more cybermancer end of the spectrum than Kat Robot (S14) - cleric (prophet of the Church of Kat) Shadow2 - shadow.
Not sure I'd see any of them as other than the races – human, robot, shadow, part fire elemental – they appear as in the comic.

Genasi is a relatively new race and it's basically "half elemental, half human" The more human-looking Fire Genasi have fiery red hair that writhes under extreme emotion, while more exotic specimens sport actual flames dancing on their heads.

Oh, yes that's a cool match for Antimony by the sound of it… except she isn't like that all the time? Nonetheless, Tom should sue…
Anyway… gie’s a steer to your preferred system reference document, so we're talking the same language?
I’m talking general fantasy roleplaying games archetypes, rather than the fine details of a particular ruleset, but then I'm from the generation that referred to all(*) fantasy games as D&D, in the 70s…
(*) Except those Traveller heretics :)

You know, there used to be this really amazing thread a while ago (back in...2012? Christ this forum is old), which used a ton of edited pages to tell the story of Gunnerkrigg-the-D&D-game, where Kat, Annie, and Rey were a trio of ridiculous munchkin players and Tom the exasperated DM. Absolutely hilarious stuff, with some brilliantly twisted ways of reproducing the loose structure of GC's plot through relatable D&D shenanigans. Tragically, it seems that most of those images were lost in the great Tinypic purge. You can still see the last 25% of it or so, though, starting here.
I do at least partly remember what the start of it was like, though, and I beleive Kat was an artificer, Annie was a necromancer/sorcerer combo, and Rey was...actually that's one part I can't remember. I just remember a lot of tongue-in-cheek commentary about him using an overpowered homebrewed class/race which the DM severely regretted ever letting him play.
EDIT: Runningflame oh nice link! I'm willing to bet that comic was a big part of the inspiration for dante's original thread, actually.

Oh right we're supposed to actually be coming with classes! Using D&D 5e rules, you say? Hm...
Well, I'd say Kat's obviously a Battle Smith Artificer, and Annie's obviously a Sorcerer (knowing what we know now, anyway)...I would say just use the Red Dragon version of Draconic Bloodline since that's the closest we'll get to a Fire Elemental Bloodline by official rules, but the wiki you just linked is reminding me that the Plane Shift sourcebooks actually introduced a Pyromancy subclass for the sorcerer! Can't get much more fitting than that. Oh, and you're definitely right about Annie having Fire Genasi for her race. We could just say the entire rest of the student characters are just Humans, but that's boring, so I'll go ahead and say Kat is a Rock Gnome (high intelligence, minor tinker-y racial features).
I'll come up with more later, maybe. This is a lot more fun than I thought it would be!

I'm willing to bet that comic was a big part of the inspiration for dante 's original thread, actually. Best thing about that thread is that he DIDN'T change the story. Maybe skipped pages here and there, but that's all. I stopped reading DM of the Rings because, in my opinion, the author changed the story too much. Thing is, that's easier. MUCH easier. I'm part of a group that started as a fanfiction group for another webcomic, but the group's work and the comic have gone in such different directions that we've discussed what it would take to remove the comic from our stories. (Some, it would be pretty easy. Others, it would be tough to change them enough to justify claiming that certain characters weren't copied from the comic without also making a complete mess of the story.) Of course, Dante began with seven years of comics already in the bag, and explicitly would only be re-captioning what was in the comic. We didn't (and don't) have the latter restriction or anything resembling it; we started out "in the same universe" and now we're "in a somewhat similar universe". (As an example, the comic has had ONE wedding, we've had FIVE plus at least one implied... two of them were a canon character marrying a non-canon character. One of those two canon characters is - now, not when we wrote her wedding - canonically involved in a much different relationship.)

Eh, Doing that for GC could be a lot of fun. Edit: I must stop posting before reading all the thread (yeah, as if I could do it . ) Thanks for the link, mturtle7 But I don't think D&D is the best system to recreate Gunnergrikk Court's characters. (not enough fights). It would be nice to see some attempt to recreate them with other systems, like GURPS, Fate, Mutants & masterminds or H.E.R.O, just for some example. No promises, but if I have time I could give it a shot with GURPS in the week-end.

While everyone else’s ideas fit pretty well, I can’t help but think that Circle of Wildfire Druid fits Annie almost like a glove, especially Forest Annie. I think Kat’s is easily some form of artificier though

EDIT: Runningflame oh nice link! I'm willing to bet that comic was a big part of the inspiration for dante's original thread, actually. There are many webocomics like that, one based on one piece, one on MLP: friendship is magic and of course the father of them all, DM of the rings. And, apparently, a whole bunch of them (unlike those I linked directly these I didn't read, yet, so I don't know how good they are, of if they go on hiatus after three pages, consider yourself warned)

Speaking about RPG, maybe this will interest someone. JAGS, It is an free rpg with mechanics a little on the heavy side of the spectrum (kinda GURPS-like) but with some nice ideas, IMHO, but what are really interesting are its settings. Wonderland is especially worth reading. Really weird and creepy and in some parts kinda remind me of GC.

Shut upppp. I started playing D&D in 1983, back when the boys were all uncomfortable about a girl joining the group because they were, ahem, allowing their imaginations to run away with them a bit in barbarian-meets-nubile-elven-princess style.

I've the image of Annie getting booted out of the Court's Dungeons and Dragons group when she criticizes the accuracy of a lot of the monster descriptions in the Monster Manual, based on her own encounters with their "originals".

I think Kat would be the chairperson of the Gunnerkrigg TTRPG group, so dunno if that would save Annie from getting kicked out?
