I noticed something interesting.
Did any of you see how Zimmy's hair and Annie's hair look quite similar these days? Come to think of it, if not for Zimmy's weirdness, she'd look an awful lot like Annie, just with dark hair.
It makes me think Tom's going for a light/dark parallel here. Annie sees the generally 'good' beings of the etherium, and has generally come to believe they won't harm her. Zimmy, on the other hand, seems to be tuned to the nastier end of the etheric spectrum, and believes anything from this world can hurt her.
It makes me wonder if Zimmy/Annie are more a true pair than Zimmy/Gamma.
And put it this way: we all have mental static in our heads. Random stream-of-consciousness clutter, mental junk, etc. But when we want to focus on something, we tune the static out of our heads and into a specific set of thoughts.
Zimmy's static may be pretty hellish, but she still has thoughts, and can influence them, right? She's just got to learn to tune the nasties out--I mean how long is it going to take her to realize the nobodies probably can't hurt her either? She's afraid of them, but does she need to be? She's not afraid of the trashcan. She knows enough about that world to know how to work with it--but not how it's probably influenced by her thoughts.
That's why she needs the Gammas and Annies right now--they can influence her mind or the etherium enough that she's not so mentally disrupted. But imagine if she could focus her mind and push the nasty stuff away? Once she got the hang of that, she would need neither a Gamma or an Annie.
