Not sure why Don decided to frame that answer as a question. Maybe he expected objections.

Talking to him directly (and only one-on-one) probably would work best with Tony! But remember not to be too head-on. Jones isn't known for being aggressive in her conversations, so it should be fine. We should get a lot of good intel from the upcoming confrontation!

I suppose it can be taken as a non-answer on his part, as most present probably expected him to give insights on Anthony, Antimony, and their interaction. ...But Jones did ask for his thoughts. That was probably among the things he was thinking.

Nice to hear from an adult for once.
...Alright, that was a little mean. I meant it's nice to hear from someone who was thinking about different people's perspectives, especially those involved, rather than spouting off their own biases. It can be helpful to know what other people think to give you context in how someone comes off, but at a certain point you have to go to the source.
I don't think Donald is flawless, but I do think he's been MVP in a lot of chapters.

Talking to Tony himself? What a concept!
Looks like we are about to go where this chapter started.

Oh Donald, how I love you Truly the dad of Gunnerkrigg
I hope we really delve into Tony's past in this chapter. I just personally hope Tony's condition isn't magical. I'm sure it can be done well, but I would prefer a story that doesn't give tony an 'excuse' by having his actions be out of his control.

He looks a bit pissed at Idra and Eggs. The "It's because I've known him the longest..." (emphasis his) is probably a subtle reminder that he's friends with the dude they're that Eggers is trashing. To be fair, though, Eggers probably isn't saying anything that he wouldn't say to Anthony's face. And he may have done so at some point.

The answer to that is, "you've known him the longest; you talk to him". Because, in Donald's experience, that's what works for Tony, but he's Tony's best friend. Whereas if, say, Idra went to talk to him, with her uncomfortably direct and slightly judgmental manner, I could see him clamp his mouth shut, go to the loo, and not come out.

Tony is hard to talk to in general but I think a direct approach might go well this time. Jones is a neutral party with no real prejudices, she's going to talk to him alone, and Tony is in a good situation right now. Last time people tried to talk to him he was having a bit of a mental breakdown, but now he has a new arm, a better relationship with his daughter, coworkers who like and respect him... I'm still wondering why he can't talk to Annie (one Annie at least). I always thought his problem in communication might be non-magical because it would make his character more interesting to me, but the difference in treatment between Court!Annie and Forest!Annie was so strange and unexplained. Maybe it will be similar to Annie's magical problems: she split in two (several times, really!) but that story was never about fixing a technical magical problem and more about self-discovery and self-love. Maybe accepting one Annie was already a step towards the right direction for Tony, maybe his mind cage is both a real magical device and a metaphor for repressed trauma. Also I just realized that Annie asked the question nearly four years ago!

Don Schanke. Don Donlan. Straight-up great guys. Coincidence? Now there appear to be three ships on the horizon... Probably just background details, but the collective noun for ships can be fleet or armada. Considering how Tom plants plot seeds, makes you think.

(I'm going to stop saying "My thoughts on this page," because what else would I be posting about in this thread, which is about this page?) Leading in from Idra's comment that Annie ended up spoiled because of all the attention, Anja opines that "spoiled" isn't really the right word for Annie and suggests "headstrong." That word reminds me of all the Danny Dunn books I used to read when I was a kid. (Danny is a precocious and headstrong redhead. And his name rhymes with "Annie." Another possible reason I like this comic.) The word "headstrong" is literally used to describe him multiple times. A headstrong protagonist is a boon to any story – a protagonist who is ultra-careful and thinks everything through before acting would make for a dull story. I think that Annie was starting to become spoiled in some ways, only to be slapped down before it could go very far, but she's always been headstrong – she doesn't care what rules she has to break if it's to help someone in need. What lit the fuse on a lot more story arcs was Shadow 2 coming to Annie for help in chapter 1, and she helped him. Then she met Kat and helped her with her mythology homework. Then Renard came, and she sought him out and helped him. Then she encountered Mort, and she helped him. The comic is basically about Annie helping or trying to help a series of other characters, as well as dealing with the consequences that result from her acting to help others without really knowing the facts (which are often deliberately hidden from her). Jones finally asks Don what he thinks – but although she began the conversation talking about Annie, she specifically mentions Tony in her question to Don. Frankly I think she'd be remiss if she didn't ask Don about Tony, as she knows quite well that nobody else (at least, nobody present) knows him better. I just noticed that Jones is holding her shoes. Interesting viewpoint in the third frame, as if we're standing right next to Don as he answers, holding his pipe in his hand. We see the four others, possibly setting us up for a change of scene. James has said his piece and is just listening. Anja just got done talking, and her husband hasn't said anything up to now, so she wants to know what he's going to say. Idra looks distracted by the sea. Close-up on Don then, and he emphasizes that he only suggests this because he's known Tony the longest. I think he's implying that normally it wouldn't work, but in this case it might. And finally a zoom out, revealing Don's suggestion: talk to Tony directly. He's not saying who should talk to him, but I suppose it's implied that he means Jones, since she asked the question. Don's response ends with a question mark but isn't really a question; it's more of a suggestion. I notice we now see three ships on the distant horizon – when there's been one, everyone's been wondering whether it was the cruise ship (the only Court-operated oceangoing ship we know to exist), but now that there are three, maybe people will stop wondering whether any of them is the cruise ship, or whether any of them are even Court related. There's no reason why they'd have to be Court ships. But if the Court had ships, what would they be for? Well, there could still be transportation and recreation, so perhaps the cruise ship (under new management) is out there, or maybe they've moved their Ether stations out to sea, so they're mobile, or perhaps there's other research going on (I mean, probably still related to the Omega Device, but the ships don't have to be the Device). It really looks like the next page will show Jones going to talk to Tony. I mean, she might bump into someone else along the way (ouch), but we know she ends up reaching the Carver house.

I don't have a ton to say about this page, so here's some links to previous times when Donny got to show off his ridiculous fatherly wisdom and overall awesomeness: And...that's about all I can think of, at the moment. We haven't actually seen much of Donny, but his role in Microsat 5 alone really cemented him as the most likable person in the comic for me (besides Robox, of course), and since then he's only gotten more and more awesome. In a story where so many people are constantly struggling with all their biases and ignorance and flaws...Donald Donlan really is a breath of fresh air.

Yeah it's almost a little strange. In a comic where so many of the characters' flaws are on full display, Donald is pretty steadily the best. It makes me wonder what his flaw is.

I would argue that both the Donlan parents are kind and steadily awesome! (They'd have to be, after all, to produce someone as excellent as Kat.) Maybe it's time that we get more Anja and Donny backstory? That being said, if we look at the pattern Tom established with Annie, where her flaws are a combination of her parent's flaws, I think we could also potentially look at Kat herself to see the potential flaws of Anja and Donny. Bottling up frustration, being outwardly Okay while emotionally in turmoil—I could definitely see those reflected in either Anja or Donny.
