Hey, everybody, Tom just released another extra comic. It is about how Zimmy and Gamma met each other.

Tom is so exacting in his depictions of buildings; reminds me of how much I enjoy the building illustrations from Dan Black/Landland. Like, page 19 is absolutely crazy! And I love how the things that haunt Zimmy are so weird and diverse and undefined, and (as we've been shown before) may or may not correlate/correspond to something in the "real" (or in Zimmy's words, "seen") world. The first beings may even be fairies... Can't wait to get the floppy!

So who was it who had escaped from the hospital? Was it Zimmy or Gamma?

So who was it who had escaped from the hospital? Was it Zimmy or Gamma? Zimmy was the wounded patient, but Gamma probably stayed with her. so they both left. Some real Lovecraftian eldritch horrors in this... great gnarly artwork by Tom!

Some mighty beautiful backgrounds from tom but dang my hand hurts for him when I see all those bricks!! So I wonder does zimmy know which walls she can just barge through or does she just roll the dice? Or can use her reality warping to actually walk through walls?

She braces herself (panel 1) and then pushes through either a real or an imaginary wall.. with success and no injury. Unfortunately, the other side has large flock of nobodies....

I didn't realize they were fairies until they actually seemed to care one of them got smacked.
It was funny when Gamma wiped away the illusion of a monster girl to reveal a monster girl with a cracked head.
Be that Jones?

Well, this comic is very enigmatic. It barely answers anything at all. In fact, one could say it raises more questions than before.
It also might not be the best lecture right before going to bed. Looks very good.

WOW that REALLY came out of the blue, didn't it?!
Well ok, I mean, Tom's been saying for literal years that he'd like to do a Zimmy & Gamma side comic at some point, but I had NO IDEA he had one in the works recently! I'm not the only one who thinks this is odd, right? After all, as far as I know, all of the previous side comics have been published as paperbacks first, then only later put up for free in the Extra Comics section of the website! I wonder if he's scrapping that business model entirely now, or if this is just something special he's doing for the Zimmy & Gamma comic...
Well, regardless, the comic itself is AMAZING. I was blown away by how prefectly Tom managed to capture the endless chaotic semi-hallucinatory nightmare that is this poor little homeless demon girl's existence, and the incredible catharsis that comes from Gamma's momentary imposition of stable reality onto Zimmy's world. Also, I think it's pretty clear that this comic was 100% Tom taking the opportunity to set aside all of the style & conventions he usually uses for GC and just GO WILD with the artwork, and I am HERE FOR THAT.
In general, the style he's using here really reminds me of 60s & 70s underground/psychadelic comics, which is very appropriate for the subject matter, I think.

[snip] I don't know from where I personally got the inkling, but (kinda like you said) he's been talking about a Zimmy story being the next one for some time. He probably mentioned it on Twitter, Patreon, or maybe a recap video. I wonder if The Current State Of The World factors in to it not being printed yet. Hmm... Edit: This comic being in the works was mentioned a couple times on Patreon in 2019.

I'm wondering about that final scene. I'd say it's clearly a couple Court representatives come to take Zimmy off to her new home in Gunnerkrigg. One of them could possibly be Tony, but I wouldn't bet on it.
But how exactly does that fit with the rest of the Zim Grim events? There are discarded bandages on the bed. Did Gamma bring Zimmy to the hospital, and then Zim take off alone again? If so, how did she and Gamma get together again?
Or was Zimmy in the hospital before any of the events in the comic, but her absence only now being discovered? If so, how and why was she hospitalized? And how did the Court find out about her?
In either case, it seems Z & G must have spent some time on the street after this, before the Shadow Men finally tracked them down.

I'm assuming the timeline is something like this:
Zimmy mooches about for an indeterminate amount of time, Court may have had her on the radar but not necessarily Zimmy and Gamma meet then go to the hospital, setting off a concrete flag for the Court Zimmy and Gamma take off before Court shows up, though not specifically for that reason Zimmy and Gamma mooch about some more Court, knowing they're in the area, catches up to them not too long thereafter

That would be unusual for a non-relative, but maybe they couldn't understand Polish and just assumed.
That scenario would also explain how the Court became aware of Gamma and, when they finally caught up with the pair, was willing to bring them both to Gunnerkrigg.

hmm, maybe the Omega project, in part, has to do with control of reality (distortion). As part of that, they needed to be able to detect reality distortion, and thus happened to detect Zimms. After the detection, they'd sort of been keeping an eye on her, waiting for their chance to swoop in to grab her for Omega experiments, etc. They want to control/distort reality, perhaps thru ether manipulation... here is a being who does it naturally, tho without much control (tho some! see p 9). Ideal experimental subject! When Gamma took her to the hospital for her injuries, they saw their chance... they may even have noted that that reality distortion vanished in Gamma's presence, and so determined to grab her too. But Zimms and Gams, not liking the hospital, bugged out as soon as the Zimmster was well enough to be mobile, before the Court could arrive.

One of them could possibly be Tony, but I wouldn't bet on it. At that time, Tony was busy working as a surgeon, researching the Omega Device and trying to save Surma (who had about one year left to live), doubtful that the Court would send him of all people.

Panels 1-4 here make me think of panel 4 here, which reminds me of panel 2 in this page, that brings me to this page.So long story short, the Court uses their awesome satellites to make sure children and snails all around the world are ok, no relation to any ominous devices whatsoever.

Wild art in this! Architecture and monsters! Yeah! That one lady on the sidewalk who tried to stop her from running into the road though... definitely got Zimmingham'd there. In fact, a lot of people probably did. Who knows, maybe before meeting Gamma, everyone who touched her would get thrown into her Construct. Hard to say. Living through a constant waking nightmare: for sure. Being a living nightmare generator for everyone else: maybe This gives a very slightly better sense of how long the Court was looking for her. About 3 months pass between Zimmy first meeting Gamma and their encounter with the creature that's probably an Orjak, so the Court were apparently on her trail that whole time, plus some indeterminate amount of time after that till they finally catch her long enough to explain their deal.

One of them could possibly be Tony, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm going to say not Tony; this would have been close to the time Annie's mom died. She was probably deteriorating or recently dead. Can't imagine him going off to try to get Zimmy into the Court. The short lady might be Jones though. EDIT: edit to nod to everyone else who commented before me on these things.

I guess I might have a different view about the creatures that appear here; they could well be fairies (such as the ones that appear from "empty crisp packets"), but I stared at them for a very long time and to me they look like smells or sensations, perhaps (like her teeth hurting, or feeling cold, the stench of the dumpster). It's not clear to me otherwise why they cause her so much pain or anxiety. The car seemed to her like a horror cow, for example. And the blackout, pain, and blood from hitting her head against a concrete block seemed like numbness and glowing liquid in her wake. Like she was melting as the energy drained from her body. All those sensations felt really wonderfully visualized to me by Tom's artwork. Zimmy doesn't have a traditional childhood or traditional conceptualizations of things, it's no wonder her "symbols" for the world don't match our poor "stale symbols", as Loup put it. They seem a lot more like Robot's explosion of sensory perceptions once he got his new body. They could well be fairies of course, since Zimmy (involuntarily) distorts a lot of things as she tries to make sense of what she's perceiving. Makes me wonder what that insect in the wall would have been in our reckoning. Poor Zimmy. ((Thanks Tom for a wonderful side story! Will definitely be making a donation at the end of the month to show my appreciation for all your work!))

I think the title is a nod to "Invader Zim", and the art style of the cover + the first few pages only add to my theory.

Some real Lovecraftian eldritch horrors in this... great gnarly artwork by Tom! I also thought that the creatures in this one looked like something out of Lovecraft - definitely nightmarish (in a good way). I hadn't thought that the people showing up at the hospital were from the Court; I'd thought they were family members come to check on Zimmy, though the former makes more sense.
