I wonder if Brinnie will still be bitter about Tony? James sure is.

I interpret "point you in the right direction" to mean that Brinnie is going to introduce Kat to someone/something else that might be able to help with the wimey time tryme stuff. I wonder if Brinnie will still be bitter about Tony? James sure is. If she is one look at him should cure that.

I was thinking earlier about the Checkov guns that are still lying around, such as a certain tooth. But... *Brinnie*??
... and what does a valkyrie know about time travel other than the suspended in a wall of flame thing?

But... *Brinnie*?? ... and what does a valkyrie know about time travel other than the suspended in a wall of flame thing? Assuming she will know other Norse beings due to her valkerie-ness, there are beings in Norse mythology called the Norns, who spin fate and are connected to the past, present and future of all things. No direct god of time though. Interestingly, a lot of the artwork depicting the Norns spinning the threads of fate reminds me heavily of what Jeanne saw surrounding Smitty all those chapters ago.

I love how Anja is just "Never mind scientific impossibilities, my girl can do this!" A+ parenting. ^^

Damn, double chekov's gun combo. In case anyone's interested, the reveal of Brinnie being a valkyrie was in Ties, March 2009, and the last time we saw her in-comic was in Donnie's flashback in Microsat 5, March 2012.

Wow, are we finally going to see Brinnie in a non-flashback scene? A lot of things tying up together!

Heh. In another thread it was just the other day brought up that Valkyries are kinda like psychopomps since they Guide deceased warriors to Valhalla. I remember speculating in thought that Kat is bound to be the goddess of the living robots and Annie will be their psychopomp, and this would be depicted by at one of their deaths having a kinda-psychopomp guide them to their new role which, surprise of surprise, would be Brinnie, who would be quite astonished to see the child of her childhood friends taking on a new role in the heavens. Looks like regardless of if the speculation is true or not we get to see Brinnie again. This could be interesting.

They will, I think, need to consult Mimir (or his head, depending on what part of the Norse mythological record "present-day" Gunnerkrigg corresponds to).

It must be about someone Brinnie knows (the Norns or Mimir are both good guesses indeed!). If Brinnie herself would have known how to travel through time, she would not have had no time for lunch together with the others. Heh. In another thread it was just the other day brought up that Valkyries are kinda like psychopomps since they Guide deceased warriors to Valhalla. Actually it was brought up that they are not.I wonder if Brinnie will still be bitter about Tony? James sure is. I don't think these two situations are comparable. Brinnie had a crush that was not reciprocated, James thinks Tony "stole" his girlfriend. And frankly, I always found Brinnie being insulted pretty ridiculous. If she really was into Tony, she should have just made the first move herself.

That's how at least half of them act. 😑 And I'm sorry if I sound sexist, I'm not trying to be, but honestly, that's my experience. Count me as one person excited about the indication that Brinnie will be back. Partly because I'm fond of Norse mythology, partly because she'll now get to be part of the present-day part of the story at last.

Brinnie!! Chekov's, uh, valkyrie fires once again This comic is a veritable Chekhov's Armory- that's probably one of the reasons I got hooked on it so quickly. Payoff may not come fast, but it comes often.
On the topic of Brinnie specifically, I have to wonder if she'll have aged like the rest of the photo crew, or if she'll still look relatively young. I can't find any sources discussing whether or not valkyries visibly age at the moment, but the Gunnerverse also abides by Our Monsters/Robots/Giant Crabs/Supernatural Entities Are Different, so... we'll have to see, I guess.

Something not mentioned so far: Which other things can we spot in the wooden box? I see a wristwatch, two heart-shaped stones(?) and a corkscrew(?), plus something covered by Anja's hand. Are these things mementos, or do some of them have any special powers? Even if they are simple mementos, what do they remind Anja of? And frankly, I always found Brinnie being insulted pretty ridiculous. If she really was into Tony, she should have just made the first move herself. Have you ever met women? (It'll probably vary from place to place, depending on cultural customs) I strongly assume it must vary from place to place or peer group to peer group, because I have had four girlfriends in my life who all were first in stating their attraction to me. None of my sisters and none of my female friends act like Brinnie either. Some might be too shy to take the first step, and hope the person they like notices their attraction and acts first themselves, but none of them deliberately refrain because "the guy has to take initiative". I have no idea where you live and who your peers are, but among my peers this is seen as a long outdated concept. BTW, if you're trying not to sound sexist (or any other kind of prejudiced), I advise you to refrain from making generalized statements about more than half the world's population based solely on your personal experience.

And frankly, I always found Brinnie being insulted pretty ridiculous. If she really was into Tony, she should have just made the first move herself. It's a teenager thing, not just a female thing like stef1987 suggested. For whatever reason (upbringing, mistaken impression from movies/TV/novels, etc.) Brinnie expected Tony to ask her out, instead of the other way around. And since she was a teenager with less experience of the world than an adult, she reacted with anger when what she expected to happen didn't happen. Now that she's older, in the same situation, she very well might respond by making the first move herself, but back then she didn't have the life experience to go there yet. Which could be interesting, since Tony's single at he moment. If she's single as well, she might decide to go after him again now, and not wait for him to make the first move this time. Teen males often do more like Tony did (though not as extreme) in being so unsure of if the girl likes them or not that they're too scared to ask them out. There's probably been billions of missed teen romances because neither could get up the courage to ask the other one out.

I'm just reeling. There's just a new Gunnerverse-shaking revelation every other page lately. I'm on tenterhooks. My GKC notes are 57 pages long now. The only stories I take notes on are Tolkien and this one. But will we see Brinnie this chapter, or will we have to wait for that until later? Did she have to marry a mortal, or is working for Gunnerkrigg Court standing in for marrying Gunnar in this version of her story? If it is, what's the equivalent of Sigurd in this version?

Are these things mementos, or do some of them have any special powers? Even if they are simple mementos, what do they remind Anja of? The heart-shaped things are as big as the face on the watch and may be a pair so they are probably either earrings or lockets; if lockets, maybe she just owns similar ones but if they match it's possible one belonged to or was intended as a gift for Surma. If just similar lockets they might be gifts. The corkscrew shape may be a dangle-pendent. Looks like at least one necklace on the right. Any of her stuff is potentially related to control of her system but without a better look there's no way to tell.

What are the betting odds for chemistry between Tony and Brinnie, if they're forced to have one-on-one time, because of the time-travel project? I doubt the story will go that way, and Tony may not have had enough time with his grief. However, it would be hilarious, if the two Annies had to get used to their dad dating.
Tony, alone with Brinnie: "So about Baldr?..." Brinnie: "What about him?" Tony: "Do they call him 'shining' because he's... Baldr..." Brinnie: "..." Tony: "Shiny because of the hair loss-" Brinnie: "No, I get it. I'm just utterly confused."

Anyway, it is pretty sexist, but I gather that is actually a common understanding of how these things are supposed to work. Human courtship rituals are weird, inefficient, and, yes, traditionally very gendered! In the end, I'd say Brinnie's reaction seems kinda old fashioned, a bit immature, but also perfectly believable.
Also, as far as her current attitude towards Tony goes...come on, it was a single unrequited crush in HIGH SCHOOL. I'm sure she was really pissed at him for a while, but she's had, what, more than 30 years to get over it? There's not really any way of knowing how their relationship has changed in those 30 years.
...that being said, I can still speculate wildly! Let's say, she thinks he's kind of an asshole and they're not really friends anymore, but she's also never stopped being kinda attracted to him, and she finds a bunch of facial scars and a missing arm to be kind of sexy.

(...) plus something covered by Anja's hand. It looks like a necklace. Maybe her old computer interface before she made the Reynard trap one. Speaking of which, the fact that she didn't get rid of it or change its "main program" (i.e. shape) speaks something about how much she trust the fox demon. To be fair, he's been longer possessing their Orjak friend's corpse than being a teenager's pet, and I bet she doesn't even know about the whole arbiter deal that basically freed him from Annie's command! (she'd freak out, probably) (...) and she finds a bunch of facial scars and a missing arm to be kind of sexy. The more scars and missing limbs the higher the chances of attracting a valkyrie, is what they say
