Kat is building a Gundam to battle Loup. An entire army in fact, intending to use the "newmen" as pilots, and she's also building something else for herself. Sidenote I kind of love the idea that etheric stuff looks goofy and boring to Kat because she's essentially the sphere in Flatland. It's interesting to note that, while Kat is one of the least (if not the least) etherically inclined characters, at the same time she is also the one most similar to Coyote/Loup due to the robots' beliefs.

Wow, lots of speculation here! I figured it was just the scene from the last chapter with the Angel and robot brain transference. Whatever it is, I don't think it bodes well for the relationship between Annie and Kat at all! Going from close friends who share everything to now potentially blatant deception isn't a great sign for a friendship.

After the Annies had their "come-to-Jesus cum ashray" episode, they called pax and admitted that they were the same. It would be painful to find out that, while they could accept themselves as-is, it isn't enough for Kat (even for the moment). They are Annie - just not her Annie. I know most of the time I stand by the "this timeline's Annie is long since dead and carried away by the river" theory, but I would also find it hilarious if it turned out this timeline's Annie is alive but has never met Kat (or if basser 's great theory is right and it turns out to be Zimmy).
Y'all should maybe remember too that Annie is etherically tagged as a psychopomp (as we saw way back in the Realm of the Dead arc), and she's more or less being stalked by them like, all the time. So if Kat's creating new life forms with souls and stuff down there she might be assuming it's gonna get weird if the soul-ferrying brigade gets wind of it. She might also be nervous because she's using the arrow to do this against Ghost Lawyer orders, on account of etheric laws are just a lot of goofy nonsense to her presumably as a side-perk of being a hyperdimensional technogodess. So she's like "whatever, throw me in ghost jail, it'll just be some janky cartoon bars made of cardboard and string". But she knows Annie takes the etheric stuff seriously so she might not want to let on that she's directly flouting ghost rules. Sidenote I kind of love the idea that etheric stuff looks goofy and boring to Kat because she's essentially the sphere in Flatland. Even if it looked bland and boring to her, she still needed Annie's help to pick the etheric lock keeping Jeanne's boyfriend's soul bound to the Arrow. I would expect an Etheric prison cell for Kat to be as hard to break out from as a mundane prison cell to a mundane person. By the way, there is also the thing of " having your mind permanently restricted" in addition to the physical jail. And that could manifest to Kat in a very unpleasant way. Like being strapped to a table and getting a drill to the brain, or something like that.
One should NEVER try to obviously stop someone from looking at your big secret, because whatever it is, it's rarely worse than the worst thing they can imagine, and THAT is what will spring to mind for them when you try and pull this bulls**t. Edit: as evidence, I present the theories people are currently proposing for what Kat's big secret is.
If I had the authority, I would now declare you to be this thread's winner.

Well, considering Kat seemed to be pretty disturbed when she learned neither of these Annies were "her" Annie, it's possible she's not really seeing her in the same light as before. But I think it's a bit of an overreaction. I agree that their relationship is changing/has changed (and likely will continue to), but you've never hidden something something from a friend because you were afraid of how they would react? Especially at this age?

I suspect the point may not be who is boining but who is NOT boning (and who is also unable to escape the reality that seemingly everyone else is boning). Wouldn't surprise me if Paz comes out of the back room wearing only a shirt of Kat's. Then, failing to reach either Juliette or Arthur by phone, the Antimonies go to see Smitty and George for help in stealing back the water only to find them inexplicably missing. And Kat's parents aren't answering the door. So they go to the Forest dude apartment building to recruit a burglar but every single door has a sock on the doorknob... Finally, in desperation, they attempt to contact the Headmaster... (He does have a daughter, you know, so unless she was conceived in vitro...) Also: must be March.

One theory that I am strangely fond of is that this timeline's Annie is with the psychopomp, which kind of explains why they are so absent now.

I agree it doesn't bode well for their relationship, but they never shared everything with each other. Like Kat didn't tell she was in a relationship with Paz until Annie saw them kissing and Annie never told Kat she was using Kat's homework to cheat until Anthony came along. They are close friends, but each definitely has held secrets for each other at some points. They can be both quite secretive.

Interesting that Kat seems to have hidden her little project of making a new race of humanoids from the Annies. It could just be because she thinks Annie wouldn't approve (though she had no issue with Arthur's new body and apparent soul - maybe the dodgy consent is what she wouldn't like). Or she doesn't feel like she can trust the Annies since the revelation that neither of them are "her" Annie.
OR (WildSpec hat) there's an AnnieBot in the basement. Testing a theory that the two Annies can seem completely real without actually being the "real" Annie?

Fitting then, that Coyote called the Court a "rabbit warren" more than once.

Also, do not forget Kat not telling Annie about having been working (and developed a friendship) with Tony for weeks. Precedents all around.

She was allowed in because of her "Creator" symbol.

Minor nitpick: Kat didn't even know for sure that she was in a relationship with Paz until then. But otherwise yes, very good point. This scene feels kind of different in that we haven't seen this "No don't look in that closet!!" reaction before (I think); but maybe there just wasn't an opportunity for it. Before, the cat always came out of the bag before anyone could try to stop it, leaving room only for, "Well, I guess you know now!"

My first assumption is that there's "Absolutely Not A Humanoid Robot Factory Down There". Although I'm not sure why Kat doesn't want her to see it. Maybe she just assumes that Annie wouldn't like it, or she wants to get a chance to explain before Annie has a chance to see it. Either way, Annie can't possibly not notice that Kat is a horrible liar. Still waiting for the return of the title page image ... It dies seem like an old picture of a younger Kat and Annie. In Kat's eyes, the original Annie. I'm guessing the Twins will find a simulated whiteboard, full of photos and virtual red yarn. Maybe, this is a chance for them to finally talk about what's going on with Kat.

Not telling Annie she was working voluntarily with Annie's father must have been deliberate. I cannot believe Kat thought it was just not important enough to mention. But yes, we cannot know whether Kat would have actually tried to keep Annie from finding out back then.
