Shades of the feelings by some "Harry Potter" readers that the story got less fun when it became less a "magic school" story and more a "defeat the Dark Lord" story?

I see it very differently. Coyote's plan is still unfolding. Loup is a gamepiece, not a player. He is being manipulated by Coyote, like so many other characters. Coyote's influence has just become less obvious now that he is dead and has very few appearances. I acknowledge that all of that is true. But for me the core problem is that the story has become a drag and I am not enjoying it. The destination is not a motivator if the journey sucks. Maybe then you should really take a break - I do not think this Loup character will stick around longer than the current book is going.

You should definitely take a break from reading GC, at least. I know it's hard to break a webcomic habit - I kept reading El Goonish Shive updates for months after I got tired of the story, for instance - but really, it's not worth it if you're not enjoying it at all anymore. There's plenty of good comics to read out there, you really don't have to keep checking the latest page to see if this time, everything's fixed because Tom's storytelling style has gone back to the way it used to be and Gunnerkrigg Court has stopped being so dull for you.
I mean, heck, maybe it will! Maybe you can come back in a few months, and by then the story will have changed enough that you can declare yourself an official GC fan again! I'd certainly appreciate that, since I personally don't think the fanbase for this awesome comic can ever be large enough! But I wouldn't want you to keep reading something you're not enjoying anymore. That sucks.
