In fact, I would expect it to work because it is so simple that the wisps might overlook it. It can be a merry mess even without wisps. As active countermeasures go… I'd expect magically superior opponents are more capable of subtle sabotage of anything magical, and more likely to wreck or indirectly (via mind games) affect "crude" stuff. The problem is, they face both wildly anomalous conditions and probably magically savvy opponents.
