Hmm, this is unexpected. Why would Arthur's transformation cause a breach of Annie's contract with Rey? Well we know that Kat scanned the transfer process when she passed ownership back to Annie. Perhaps the issue is that some of the data is being reused for the brain transfer progress, which constitutes a break of the etheric contract? They did say it was single-use. oooh, that would be really flippin' clever and I hope it's true!

"You've been shifted" is vague... it could refer to (1) the Annie's time shift, or to (2) the shift Annie-Kat-Annie of Rey's ownership. I think (1) makes more sense. If (1) the shift would be an unusual case where dual use is "legal" since both Annies are the original contract holder (making this another piece of evidence that both Annies are real and "Annie" - as netherdan points out). The "that's OK then" could refer to there not being an additional violation here (of dual use) by two separate, different Annies having separate ownership. Little spook will move on to next discuss the main violation here: a dispute about to be caused concerning (etheric) ownership. Im suspecting that Kat copied the etheric ownership protocol when ownership of Rey was returned to Annie (now Annies). She is using this - not to do the brain transfer - but rather to break the Court's (etheric, apparently) ownership of Arthur, and transfer it to Arthur himself.... giving him free will, which might also incidentally be another component of en-souling him. But Arthur's original contract (established by Diego?) would then be broken against the Court's will, causing a breach. Sort of like the Court-robot contract was hacked by Kat, who has effectively erased the Court's signature on the ownership document and replaced it with her own, clearly a no-no in contract law.
But its more than that. Kat took a single use contract (Annie(s)-Rey contract) and duplicated it for another use entirely - to fudge a change in the Court-Arthur contract. A dual-use breach as well? In the last frame, Kat may be realizing that the Annie's are timeline shifted versions of the same person.
I don't think Kat is using Rey's body possession ability to transfer Arthur's mind... basically having Arthur "possess" his new body like a demon (which would be kinda creepy). Unless that is happening by accident, outside her plan. The thing she was actually studying was the etheric ownership transfer, I think in order to specifically transfer Arthur's control from the Court to himself, so he could be an autonomous being.

Oh, so the contract is like some kind of a cryptographic signature, and Kat tried to just copy the one involved in Annie and Reynardine relationship, file off the serial numbers, replace some variables and slap it on Juliette and Arthur. Or, actually, on Arthur and Arthur. Voodoo Programming: if a dusty subroutine works, it works. While reading through someone else's code, it's always a pain to run into it. You're just, "What? Why?... What?!", and whatever flowchart you were trying to make, has a black box with a "?" in the middle of it. But if I'm being honest, there's a few borrowed functions in my toolkit, that I don't entirely know how they work. New to the Ethereal, I'd understand if Kat had to voodoo a copy-and-paste job. Just as long as she didn't mix tab and space indentation. Voodoo code that mixes space and tab is an abomination. What kind of sick human being does that? That's deeply and profoundly wrong.

a contract is about to be broken, but the Arbiter Saslamel while having an early warning system for breaches of contract Doesn't have the omniscience to know which contract, so they are sifting through all the local Etheric Contracts. the Contract between Antimony and Reynardine is the simplest and therefore the first order of business, Antimony and Courtannie, and Reynardine have just claimed they are that contract Interpreter is confused, as his paperwork shows it's a singular contract between two individuals But three individuals are claiming the rights of that contract, Arbiter Saslamel, explains that Antimony has been temporally shifted to become both Antimony and Courtannie Interpreter then sees that as Antimony and Courtannie, are both the same Antimony, there is no legal issue with their contract.
most likely in the future comics Interpreter will then move on to the other Etheric Contract in the room, that is the one about to be broken. Namely the Contract originally made by Diego, when he made his Golems, and was duplicated when the Golems made the first Robots, and was duplicated Further when the Robots made more Robots Namely that the Golems were owned and/or in service to the "Creator" That Diego was the Original owner/holder of the Title of "Creator" and that upon the death of Diego, the Golems would be owned and/or in service to the Court and that upon the death of Diego, the position of owner/holder of the Title of "Creator" would be vacant until the Golems bestowed it upon someone worthy of continuing the work Diego had started. when the Golems "died" the Robots inherited the role of Golems in the contract because the Robots were created by the Golems and were their children. Changing the Etheric Contract, to include the clause or amendment, The Robots, are owned and/or in service to the Court Later the Robots bestowed the Title of "Creator" upon Katerina, Making Katerina, the current owner of the Robots, making a new amendment, The Golems and Robots, are owned by the "Creator" Katerina, and are in Service Firstly, to the "Creator" Katerina, and the Robots are secondarily in service to the Court.
My best Guess is that this Contract is about to be Broken. and Arbiter Saslamel has shown up to ask, is Katerina sure she wants to break this contract for this particular Robot and to explain that in trying to convert the Robot Arthur into a person 1. she will be given the Title of Goddess, 2. that Arthur will be given the rights of a person 3. that Katerina will lose personal ownership of Arthur 4. That Arthur will no longer be an object or slave, and will no longer be required to serve Katerina or the Court
Arbiter Saslamel, might be the Etheric equivalent of the annoying computer popup that asks if you are sure you want to perform the actions you are trying to do.

Yes! Agree 100%. It's a very nice expansion/elaboration on what I wrote above (tho perhaps arrived at independently!) ... I especially like the introduction of the creator title into all this and how that factors into the contract & history. A question though is why would Kat be permitted to break the Court-robot contract at all. If she has the ability to do this for Arthur, she could in principle free all the robots. Perhaps it is only permissible in this case because, since in her role as Creator, she has remade Arthur into a new kind of being, in some sense, he is no longer a robot, and thus the Court-robot contract is null and void in his case anyway... she has evolved him out from under its terms.

I'm enjoying that Arbiter Saslamel is apparently just a giant wall sculpture that doesn't move at all, but does emit a booming voice from nowhere. It's like our four protagonists are staring up at the statues of, say, the Trevi Fountain with a sound system dictating a legal document hidden behind the statues.
I wonder what other ownership contract disputes Saslamel handles. I have this scene in my mind now: two 8-year-old boys at a birthday party in someone's back yard were fighting over who owned the football, but then the back of the house turned into this giant ancient booming voice statue dude, and the plot of grass they had been fighting on was raised up, and all the other kids and their parents were turned to stone and shoved off to the side, and now Saslamel is listening to the two brats fighting over who's ball it actually was, and as desperately as he wants to faceplam over the whole thing, he doesn't have hands and of course can't move anyway.

If the ball in question has an etheric entity entrapped into it like Hetty was into that doll I would have serious doubts on their parents' judgement to punish a spirit by having their kids kick it around. Even worse would be if one of the kids made a contract with some demon for a ball that always wins his games!

If you like characters who are apparently just giant wall sculptures that don't move at all, but do emit booming voices from nowhere, then let me humbly put in a word for Digger, if you haven't already read it. A lot of the things I enjoy about Gunnerkrigg Court are also things I enjoyed in Digger back when it was still running.

I fear that this is correct, and the arbiter will deny the transfer, and intervene to prevent it—and then "Arthur" will be lost, leaving a dead robot and a dead body.

I thought 'shifted' meant the ownership of Rey had shifted to Kat - and they never managed to successfully swap it back to Annie. Twist??? Oh! Maybe by using her computer as the arbiter, she screwed up the process... But then why did the symbol on his head change back? And still doesn't explain why creating life would breach that contract. ...How did I miss the symbol changing? That's a really neat detail.

Maybe Kat "accidentally" copied Reynard's body transfer functions and by trying to access them right now to transfer Arthur's personhood into the new body is a breach of contract because Reynard, and by extension his powers, are currently owned by the Antimonies. Also, "shifted" kinda support that one of the Annies has been shifted between timelines! Wait no, remember how she transfered Rey to Annie with the computer as a proxy? She probably used that data to learn how to transfer minds.

If he spoke English, Saslamel would probably sound like Olmec from “Legends of the Hidden Temple.” "You could amend the contract by running into the Room of the Three Gargoyles. Push in the right tongue, and a door might lead you down a staircase and into the Wall Climb. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up into the Observatory, spin the sundial, and pass into the Treasure Room. Once there, you'll lift up the treasure chest and climb down through it, or try to enter the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue, and you maybe head for Pirate's Cove. Spin the ship's wheel, and you can descend into the Dungeon. You can climb up the ladder, or plow through the stone wall, find the key, and it may unlock the Tomb of Ancient Kings, which will allow you to enter the Treacherous Swamp. Next, you could climb into the Swamp. If you escape, then you may have a chance to enter the room of Harmonic Convergence. Stand on the proper two steps, and the doors may open. If the correct door is unlocked, you could crawl through the Pit of Despair, and finally make your way through the Cave of Sighs and back through the Temple Gate."

Remembering an old Simpson's Halloween special, when Satan (aka Flanders) couldn't obtain Homer' soul because he had, in written (a postcard), given his soul to Marge...
A) Maybe these guys (the Rotd? PsychoPimps?) for all that matters to them, consider a robot a "stuffed toy". If so,
B) Arthur gave his robotic soul to Juliette, and
C) to embody someone, there should be no such binding "contract", i.e. love
D) the cost of Arthur being his own person is,... That their love would not be transfered...

I think that Kat's way of reversing the transfer, using Diego's arrow, is the most likely explanation for Annie and Reynardine's contract being involved with Kat's experiment.
Nothing happened - on the surface level - when Kat used Diego's arrow to transfer Reynardine's ownership back to Annie. In which case, there was seemingly no reason (from a narrative perspective) for Kat to be shown using the arrow, or to undertake any such complicated high-tech procedure. But if something *did* go wrong then, but didn't show itself at the time, so that they're only finding out about that now, then Kat's way of doing it *does* have a plot point.

Perhaps the issue is that some of the data is being reused for the brain transfer progress, which constitutes a break of the etheric contract? Maybe. A salient point here is that's not only about "a breach of contract", there's "dispute was about to be caused". Dispute between exactly whom and whom over exactly what? maybe nothing, it's just that wheels of bureaucracy move like molasses uphill in January and it's taken them this long to say "Heeeeey waiiitaminnit"? This was my first suspicion too. But MarineMonarch has a point. Can't lie, I'm kinda wishing this little guy was a paperclip. We don't know what his material is supposed to be.
