So what is a soul, anyway? Arthur already has a personality, memories, goals, etc, and can even feel romantic love. So is a soul just an abstract kind of ... spark or something? I have the same question about the concept of 'soul' in the Harry Potterverse. There, it's possible for a soul to be subdivided and parts of it placed in inanimate objects. So just what is it, what's it made of, is it an agent that can act on its own, how does it get associated with a living being?
Endless questions which most authors just ignore or gloss over, or just assume the reader will fill in any blanks with their own ideas. Perhaps Tom will give a more definitive answer.

I did have a speculation that both Annies would look at each other, nod, and grab Kat to carry her into the aether. This is actually not far from the mark.

Well it could require all of those things, but going from what we know about Robot's changes, it seems the last step of transition from not-alive to alive is... sensation? The new bodies Kats created allow the robots to actually feel, in the tactile sense, temperature and texture, as well as pain, tiredness, growth. Before it was a computer taking in readings, while now it's a person experiencing feelings. And unlike Robot, who's alive-ness is still stored in a chip, Arthur now has a full brain, so he will genuinely experience things like a biological being does. That seems to be what the comic is suggesting is the last step to getting a soul.

Maybe the difference is just that souls are created from the Ether and go back there (I hope the explanation will be a bit longer, though).

I can't find the page but could it be a fancier form of the "code" City Face used as a puzzle in one of his story breaks?

Well, according to the Detective Pikachu Movie, [ a human soul includes your mind, personality, body, anything on your body including clothing and personal affects, and any addictions your body might have, but NOT your memories]. So it could be whatever you want, basically. (This was the best way I could come up with to do highlightable spoiler tags, I do apologize if it somehow doesn't work.)

'Ello 'ello!
Welcome to godhood. Please follow your designated cherubim for an orientation tour and remember to leave your mortality by the door. [nitpick mode]
It's "cherub". "Cherubim" would be the plural. [/nitpick mode]
Yes! Though I also think of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wind in the Door, where the characters encounter a creature that looks like an ever-shifting bunch of wings and eyes and fire and identifies itself as "a cherubim." One of the human characters objects that "cherubim" is plural--to which the creature replies, "I am practically plural... I am certainly not a cherub. I am a singular cherubim." (That doesn't have anything to do with this page, I just wanted to quote it. Love that book.)

If this guy is some kind of soul authority, I wonder whether he'll have something to say about the fact that there are two Annies now??

I'm already using transparent tags like so: [font color="transparent"][/font] Maybe if I double up it'll work doubly well. Spoiler tags do work, they just show up as normal text in the preview editor because they don't have any styling unless you add it yourself* and proboards didn't think to add in anything to handle that. I've been using them just fine for quite some time in the index thread. *( totally not a shameless plug) weird spoiler but ok

[img style="max-width:100%;" src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png" alt=" " Unfortunately "transparent" is not a valid color for the [font] proboards BBCode tag. It worked now because of the stylized [span]. Maybe you could stylize the font tag too, never tried that. You could have used [font color="white"] and it would work as intended without the span By the way, if you google "proboards bbcode list" and happen to stumble upon a support page listing them all, please refrain from using the most terrible of the bbcode tags. I won't tell its name here for fear of someone trying it and I don't want Tom limiting the forum tags because of bbcode abuse, but you will know it when you see it, such is its terribleness!

I didn't know we had transparent and even transparent underlined fonts, cool! Oh, you can have so much more with CSS styling. But it's a road we better not take. Especially not on the pages threads. pyradonis It's the marquee tag. Please don't tell anyone

I suspect that GC will not answer the "what is a soul" question, but today's comic does suggest the answer to the "is a mind different from a sufficiently-advanced detector (or computer)" question is "no."
