Is Reynardine pronounced "Rey-nar-deen" or "Rey-nar-dyne"? I gather both are correct, but personally I say Reh-ner-deen

okay...i was kinda wondering about this - in girl genius (another webcomic, which you probably already know about) there's a reference to gunnerkrigg court in vol 7 pg 11. www.girlgeniusonline.com/ggcomic/index.php?date=2007-03-19, if you're curious. it's on one of the signs. i would normally assume coincidence, but as the name gunnerkrigg is so unusual, i thought that there was a connection. unless gunnerkrigg has some meaning or significance of which i'm unaware. aaaaaaanyways...what's the connection? I saw that when it first appeared, and it would seem that the connection is that one of the Folgios (or both) have read my comic and liked it enough to reference it in their comic. If this is the case then that is really cool.

Tom, I realize this is almost certainly just my brain seeing nonexistent connections again, but . . . have you ever played a game called Sacrifice? There are a lot of paralells between it and GC . . . or so it seems to me.

I know that Atimony is named after Sb (the metalloid with the atomic number of 51) and some other things that pertaain to alchemy. The only alchemal sigil Ive seen is your signature. Will alchemy play a stronger role in the future of this comic?

Mmmm, I honestly don't see many parallels between Sacrifice and GKC. Any that I can stretch far enough to tie together between them I could pretty much also make between any two works belonging to the fantasy or sci-fi genres in general.
Say Tom, are any of your characters strongly influenced by friends, family, or yourself?

Mmm, I don't think so. At leat not conciously. There is a bit of me in all the characters and other influence probably came from stuff I've read in the past.

Any that I can stretch far enough to tie together between them I could pretty much also make between any two works belonging to the fantasy or sci-fi genres in general. I wouldn't go quite that far. There were a FEW interesting coincidences . . . nothing substantial, but enough to pique the interest of someone who used to be a Sacrifice addict . . . 1. Both stories are narrated by an extremely eloquent and calm main character, who arrived at the place where the story is set later than most of the other characters. 2. Zimmy and Charlotte both have similar accents, similar attitudes, and affiliations with bugs. 3. Both level two of the James campaign in Sacrifice and chapter three of GC have someone whose name begins with R controlling a dragon-like creature whose name begins with S, much to the annoyance of someone called James. And both end with the main character getting a very powerful and useful creature to serve them. I know, I know. They're just coincidences, and not particularly big ones at that. I just wanted to show, yet again, that my speculations aren't completely baseless.

I have the feeling somebody might have already asked this, but I can't find it, so if they have, sorry.
Do you have a definite end in mind for GC? Like a countdown to how many chapters are left? Or are you adding chapters as you think of them?

Not exactly the same question, but related: We know that you already knew when you began the webcomic that Annie's mother had recently died, and that when you were writing Chapter Three, you knew that Reynardine, once he possessed Annie's plush wolf doll, could shape-shift into an actual wolf big enough for Annie to ride upon (even though you had to wait until Chapter Twelve to show it). Have there been any moments in the twelve chapters that you've already released that you genuinely didn't expect to write/draw until you actually did them, ones that took you by surprise? This is a good question. The answer is yes and no. Everything that I've drawn plot wise so far has been according to plan, but there have been some minor things that I've changed last minute when I realised something just wouldn't work. If I do make changes to the storyline they are usually things that won't happen for months, so they are just as planned as the rest.

Is the story about Coyote's unsuccessful attempt at creating humans an actual legend about him, or an invention of yours?

It is an already existing legend.

Do Gamma and Zimmy have the same lessons as most students? If so, what are their favourite lessons?

We know now that: a) the shadow-men of Gillitie Wood are the same as the glass-eyed men whom Coyote created and b) it's an actual legend about Coyote.
When you began writing "Gunnerkrigg Court", did you see the shadow-men as being the same as Coyote's botched creations from the start, or was that an idea that you came up with later on in the process?

I decided they were Coyote's creations when I finished the first chapter. That chapter was really to get a feel for doing a long form comic and plan out what would work conceptually and what would work practically. Some plans of mine have changed since then, but also a lot of my original intentions have not changed.

The first shiny-shiny volume of Gunnerkrigg arrived this weekend, and I was wondering since we're almost another 7 chapters on whether we would be seeing a second volume in print?

Is Gunnerkrigg court and the forest both in phayrighie region 4?
And what're the names of the two phayrighies we met in chapter 8?
How do phayrighies and their clothing differ from region to region as your region 6 phayrighies have vastly differing clothing to the suicide phayrighies?
Oh - are phayrighies born with the dots on their arms or are they tattooed (or something similar) on at an early age?

1, A part of the forest is.
2, They did not say
3, Their clothing changes depending on what they find laying around to make their clothes. The region 6 fairies have all the trash of a city available to make clothes.
4, They are born with their dots.

oh, thanks for the answers about the faeries - though I've got some more now.
Do faerie regions differ vastly in size, and is there a normalish size for them?
Was the turquoise haired suicide faerie born with the head dots or are they cosmetic additions?
Is it required that the faeries' region be identifiable by looking at them, as the only faerie I can remember having covered shoulders had dots on the clothing there?
And in a slightly different vein:
Are there any other places like Gillite Wood or The Court out in the rest of the world? and if so do they have any contact with each other?
Oh, and what's the name of the headmaster of Gunnerkrigg Court?

1, They differ in size but are usually very small at any given time.
2, A lot of the fiaries are born with different markings and hair ornaments.
3, One's region markings must be visible at all times. It is usually highly unfashionable to cover one's shoulders but even a fairy with bad taste must show what region they are from.
4, I believe so.
5, He has not said.

Hi again.
How did you come up with the idea for GC? Is it another one of those 'it just popped into my head all perfect and yay' things, or did you actually have to spend some time working it out? If so, how long did you have the idea for before you started GC?
