I guess possession of robots is only possible for them if there is a living piece of Gillity wood in the robot.
But in the new situation they may well escape to the "underground tree" and wait till a new dog is grown.
(also: great new avatar jda)
A reasonable speculation, but we don't really know yet if robot possession is an intrinsic ability or conferred by the Ys-seed grown wood-arm. But if the latter, as you suggest, the two trees which erupted in the Court are also both seed-grown. So they too might then be able to give possession abilities to shadow men... so I am still puzzled why court!Annie and Kat weren't more concerned with them escaping. It is very strongly hinted at, as we ever only see constructs at least partly made out of the Forest's wood being controlled by shadow men. Also, if shadow men were able to possess regular robots, shouldn't they have done so when they were fighting them in "Ties"?

They either wanted to defect to the Court, or were trying to escape back to the Forest after a (spy?) mission in the Court. There seem to be at least some shadow men (eg, Shadow 2 himself) who are not predisposed to hate and want to attack the Court. Basically, these were "friendly" (or at least neutral) shadows...

Shadow 2 was born in the Court, though. I agree with you that it did not look like an attack back then. Still, we see they defended themselves violently (on one of the pictures, there is a destroyed chainsaw robot). Had the shadow men had the ability to control robots, they would have most likely resorted to using it. Which leaves three possibilities: 1. They need Forest wood in order to control something. 2. They learned only later how to possess robots. Or 3. Only certain shadow men are able to possess robots. 1 is IMHO the most probable.

Hmm, OK, but still, Forest wood is now available in the court, from the mega-treesor the trans-former-Annan roots. If the shadows could plant a sliver of the tree or root into a robot (stick a toothpick in its joint? poke it in the eye with a twig?), they could then possess it. Perhaps the difficulty is for the shadows to do that planting of a tree sliver(?) Letting shadows wander the Court would not seem a totally risk-free prospect, so Kat & Tony's nonchalance about some escaping the train still puzzles me. But then, I am easily puzzled!

I assume they would need a seed like the one Ysengrin used to plant the arm into Robot's original body. But even then, Robot went offline for several weeks while the arm was growing. I guess Court employees would notice such an infection in time and destroy the plant.
