They've gotta still be in school, right? I'll give you 18 at most, but I think they're younger. Not necessarily. My impression is that almost all of the students of the Court continue working there (or at least for it) after they graduate. Tony and Surma leaving the Court when Surma got pregnant was exceptional. From Tom's Q&A saved in Chrysoprax/Formspring... Q: Did Katja and Donald leave the court at some point after they finished school? Did they receive court based teaching training? A: They did leave for a while, but returned shortly after Kat was born. Q: Do most of the Court students end up having "normal" jobs outside of the Court as adults? Or do most either work inside the Court or work somewhere else equally odd and mysterious? A: Some leave the Court, but a lot of them tend to stay I don't know if "some" is a small enough percentage to be exceptional, but I do think it would be wise for the Court to have graduates live in the rest of the world for a while so they develop a perspective that living a sheltered life in the Court will not provide.

Yes, that does sound like a good idea. I wonder whether some of those graduates might even prefer the outside world over the Court (which does suffer from such defects as being so large that just getting a haircut requires a long and convoluted journey with lots of "transportation shifts", and barely any greenery).

I mean, Surma IS the COURT medium. Annie is the FOREST medium. Exactly! Well put. Another thought: Look at this girl/woman putting up her saintly facade .Denying herself the anger. In that second panel, I think she is not denying herself anything, as , having transfered the Fire to Annie long ago, she HAD indeed NO anger at all inside.

Look at this girl/woman putting up her saintly facade which is so much un like her. Denying herself the anger, fear and frustration she could rightly feel in her situation, just to calm and comfort the people around her, because she just can't deal with it all. Having kids changes people. Or maybe it just forces what was really deep in there to the surface where it can be easily seen. I think Tom said somewhere that Surma became more subdued while Annie was growing because her soul was being passed on to her child. She wasn't a saint, she was just less and less able to feel like she used to. Edit: missed the post above! Sorry, I'm just basically saying the same thing ^^

Tony WTF. He's just...casually holding burning fire in his hands. His hands are just on fire and he doesn't give a single darn. All the evidence we've been given so far has told us that Tony does NOT care about his hands whatsoever, son. recall that fire elementals can make their fire non-burny, as when Annie set the dryad's favorite woods not-on-fire. (Or maybe you were just joking on Tony's lack of regard for his appendages.... ) Fire elementals can indeed choose what they do or do not burn, but Tony didn't know that when he held up the leaf. Honestly, even if he had known, I'd be pretty damn impressed that he didn't even FLINCH. I actually interpret this as some really extreme self-control on his part.

Can we use the dact that Anthony can drive a car as indication of age, or ihat too vague?

Road rules vary between countries and would've been different back then, however it does imply being at least 16, possibly the equivalent of early university or something. Anything beyond that requires knowledge of the Court that we don't have, such as how willnig they are to throw fancy cars at students. Based on Surma's maturity levels, I doubt we've moved past 19.

I mean, Surma IS the COURT medium. Annie is the FOREST medium. Probably a big deal in influencing trust! Not to mention the whole Jeanne debacle. BUT Annie would have taken the job as the Court medium, had they given it to her. Even though she already knew the Founders had killed Jeanne and her lover.

(1) is real(!) It is a Brazilian treehopper. Apparently the weird appendage makes them hard for predators to eat.
